  • By combining a wind turbine with an energy storage system (ESS), we are able to attenuate the intermittent wind power characteristic making the power derived from a wind farm dispatchable. This paper evaluates the influence of the phase delay of the low-pass filter in the conventional smoothing power control on the ESS capacity; longer phase delays require a larger ESS capacity. In order to eliminate the effect of the phase delay, we optimize the power dispatch using a zero-phase low-pass filter that results in a non-delayed response in the power dispatch. The proposed power dispatching method significantly minimizes the ESS capacity. In addition, the zero-phase low-pass filter, which is a symmetrical forward-reverse finite impulse response type, is designed simply with a small number of coefficients. Therefore, the proposed dispatching method is not only optimal, but can also be feasibly applied to real wind farms. The efficacy of the proposed dispatching method is verified by integrating a 3 MW wind turbine into the grid using wind data measured on Jeju Island.

  • This paper describes a low-voltage ride-through method for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine system at a grid fault. The generator side converter regulates the DC link voltage instead of the grid side converter by storing the surplus active power in the rotor inertia during grid fault by the sliding mode controller. The grid side converter controls the grid active power keeping a maximum power point tracking. Simulation results for small scale PMSG wind turbine verify the efficiency of the control method.

  • Owing to the depletion of fossil energy, wind power is attracting attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative energy source, because it is abundant, renewable, and non-polluting. Wind turbines are divided into horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) according to the direction of the rotating shaft. VAWTs have a low power generation efficiency, but are not affected by the wind direction and, thus, no yaw system is required and their structure is simple. Small VAWTs are attracting much attention because they can generate power even at low wind speeds. In this study, the output voltages and output currents of small VAWTs with gyromill type, hinge type and double door type blades capable of generating power even at low wind speeds were analyzed at variable wind speeds in the range of 1~11 m/s. At the maximum wind speed of 11m/s, the application of the double door type blades achieved 67% and 9% higher wind turbine output voltages than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. As regards the wind turbine output currents, the application of the double door type blades gave rise to 93% and 5% higher results than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. Through this study, the excellent output characteristics and commercialization potential of the double door type blades, which can generate power both at low and high wind speeds, were confirmed.

  • The wind turbine blades should be designed to possess a high stiffness and should be fabricated with a light and high strength material because they serve under extreme combination of lift and drag forces, converting kinetic energy of wind into shaft work. The goal of this study is to understand the basic knowledge required to curtail the process time consumed during the construction of small wind turbine blades using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) prepeg composites. The configuration of turbine rotor was determined using the QBlade freeware program. The fluid dynamics module simulated the loads exerted by the wind of a specific speed, and the stress analysis module predicted the distributions of equivalent von Mises stress for representing the blade structures. It was suggested to modify the shape of test specimen from ASTM D638 to decrease the variance in measured tensile strengths. Then, a series of experiments were performed to confirm that the bladder compression molded CFRP prepreg can provide sufficient strength to small wind turbine blades and decrease the cure time simultaneously.

  • Wind energy is currently the fastest growing source of renewable energy used for electrical generation around the world. Wind farms are adding a significant amount of electrical generation capacity. The increase in the number of wind farms has led to the need for more effective operation and maintenance. CMS(Condition Monitoring System) can be used to aid plant operator in achieving these goals. Its aim is to provide operators with information regarding th e health of their machine, which in turn, can help them improve operation efficiency. In this work, wind turbine fault diagnostic algorithm which can diagnose the mass unbalance and aerodynamic asymmetry of the blades is proposed. Proposed diagnostic algorithm utilizes both FFT(Fast Feurier Transform) of the signal from accelerometers installed inside of nacelle and simple diagnostic logic. Furthermore, to verify the applicability of the proposed system, 3W small sized wind turbine system is tested and physical experiments are carried out.

  • A vibration monitoring is performed on a 1kW class stand alone wind turbine(W/T). When a W/T model is developed, general performance under various wind condition should be verified to introduce the product in the market. Especially, vibration characteristics within operating speed range are very important in the aspect of structural stability as well as generator's electrical efficiency. This paper examines the vibration performance of a home made 1kW W/T. Various data of the W/T model are acquired in real time using a remote vibration monitoring system installed in Daekwanryung test site. Vibration stability of the W/T structure is diagnosed based upon the data and the result is used to estimate the applicability of the W/T model.

  • Nowadays, the global interests are concentrated on the preserving of the clean environment, and the diminishing of the dependence on the fossil energy, and among the possible alternative energies, the wind turbine generating system is considered to be the best suited to produce high efficiency energy, without affecting the natural environment. The permanent magnet generators were been used for the wind power generating, for long time, with continuous efforts to improve the generating efficiency. And the latest trend on it is to develop an AFPM(Axial Flux Permanent Magnet)type, which is composed in the structure of rotor and stator shaped in the disc forms, and the direction of the flux at the air gap runs in parallel to the shaft. This thesis is on the study concerning with the analysis of the characteristics of the 5 kW at 300rpm direct drive AFPM generator which is suitable for the small scale wind turbine generating system. In it, the Electro-magnetically Coreless AFPM was been analyzed, the prototype generators been made, concentrated on interpreting the characteristics of the power output, and verifying it through the theoretical study and practical tests.

  • This paper presents small signal stability analysis of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farm including series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) connected at the stator side. A detailed mathematical model of wind turbine, DFIG machine and converters and SDBR is presented in this paper to derive the complete dynamic equations of the studied system. Small signal stability of this system is carried out by modal and sensitivity analysis, participation factors and eigenvalue analysis. Finally, this paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior of DFIG based wind farm under voltage dip condition with and without SDBR.

  • In a grid connected variable speed wind turbine, the PCC voltage and the wind power fluctuate as the wind velocity changed. And this voltage variation is changed due to location of PCC. This paper calculate the value of PCC voltage variation which is proportional to the product of the line impedance from the ideal generator to the PCC and the wind turbine output current. And to reduce this PCC voltage variation, this paper calculate the required reactive power analytically using the vector diagram method. Output reactive current is changed, if the reactive current is limited by inverter capacity or grid code have the margin of voltage variation. If the grid connected inverter is controlled by proposed algorithm, the PCC voltage variation is minimized though the wind turbine output change at random. To verify calculated voltage variation and required reactive power, this paper utilized Matlab and PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and real small wind turbine and power system in Sapsido, island in the Yellow Sea.
