  • This study aims at establishing a technique for sailing yachts model tests with sailing condition. It is very important to estimate a ship's potential speed performance before building a real ship. Several methods are used to estimate a ship's potential speed performance such as using parent ship data, standard vessel chart and model test. Model test is the most precise among these options. In korea. model testing is widely used with general vessels but not with sailing yachts. Because sailing yachts are propelled with heeling and leeway. using the wind. another method is needed to estimate their speed. The new model test. which is different from tests for upright general vessels, is in a great demand. In this paper. we describe a test method for the sailing yacht model test. based on Masuyama's equation of motion. And we describe choosing scale ratio. production process and materials of the model. Also. various ways of measuring instruments. attaching jigs and adjusting calibration are described so that they can be utilized as useful data for model testing.

  • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been established as the surgical approach of choice for lobectomy in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients with clinical stage I NSCLC with no lymph node metastasis are considered candidates for VATS lobectomy. To rule out the presence of metastasis to lymph nodes or distant organs, patients should undergo meticulous clinical staging. Assessing patients' functional status is required to ensure that there are no medical contraindications, such as impaired pulmonary function or cardiac comorbidities. Although various combinations of the number, size, and location of ports are available, finding the best method of port placement for each surgeon is fundamental to maximize the efficiency of the surgical procedure. When conducting VATS lobectomy, it is always necessary to comply with the following oncological principles: (1) the vessels and bronchus of the target lobe should be individually divided, (2) systematic lymph node dissection is mandatory, and (3) touching the lymph node itself and rupturing the capsule of the lymph node should be minimized. Most surgeons conduct the procedure in the following sequence: (1) dissection along the hilar structure, (2) fissure division, (3) perivascular and peribronchial dissection, (4) individual division of the vessels and bronchus, (5) specimen retrieval, and (6) mediastinal lymph node dissection. Surgeons should obtain experience in enhancing the exposure of the dissection target and facilitating dissection. This review article provides the basic principles of the surgical techniques and practical maneuvers for performing VATS lobectomy easily, safely, and efficiently.

  • In recent years, oil prices have continued to be low owing to the development of unconventional resources such as shale gas, coalbed methane gas, and tight gas. However, shipping companies are still experiencing difficulties because of recession in the shipping market. Hence, they devote considerable effort toward reducing operating costs. One of the important parameters for reducing operating costs is the frictional resistance of vessels. Generally, a vessel is covered with paint for smoothing its surface. However, frictional resistance increases with time owing to surface roughness, such as that caused by fouling. To prevent this, shipping companies periodically clean or repaint the surfaces of vessels using analyzed operating data. In addition, studies using various methods have been continuously carried out to identify this phenomenon such as fouling for managing ships more efficiently. In this study, numerical simulation was used to analyze the change in the resistance performance of a ship owing to an increase in surface roughness using commercial software, i.e., Star-CCM+, which solves the continuity and Navier eStokes equations for incompressible and viscous flow. The conditions for numerical simulation were verified through comparison with experiments, and these conditions were applied to three ships to evaluate resistance performance according to surface roughness.

  • The 3D printing technology is one of the fourth industrial revolution technology that drives innovation in the manufacturing process, and should be applied to nuclear industry for various purposes according to the manufacturing trend change. In nuclear industry, it can be applied to manufacture obsolete items and new designed parts in advanced reactors or small modular reactors (SMRs), replacing the traditional manufacturing technologies. A gate valve body was manufactured, which was obsolete in nuclear power plant, using DED(Directed Energy Deposition) metal 3D printing technology after restoring design characteristics including 3D design drawing by reverse engineering. The 3D printed valve body was assembled with commercial parts such as seat-ring, disk, stem, and actuator for performance test. For the valve assembly, including 3D printed valve body, several tests were performed, including pressure test, end-loading test, and seismic test according to KEPIC MGG and KEPIC MFC. In the pressure test, hydraulic pressure of 391kgf/cm2 was applied to 3D printed valve body, and no leak was detected. Also the 3D printed valve assembly was performed well in end-loading and seismic tests.

  • In this paper, an application example for fitness-for-service of material is shown. A kind of instrument valve is made of austenitic stainless steel fabricated by the cold working process. The tensile strength of the cold worked austenitic stainless steel has to be limited under 90 ksi to prevent the stress corrosion cracking in power plants. In industrial fields, tensile strengths of some materials were discovered to be over the regulation requirements in a certified material test report (CMTR). Owner's verification tests were performed to compare with that in a CMTR and to check the appropriateness. It is found that, in the case of verification test under the required test speed, valve materials could be used in the field. Although it is only one application sample of material check process in the power generation site, this case study could show an importance of basic experimental technology in academia and research circles.

  • The accident of the small vessel is increasing due to the growth of the sea and service industry. According to data from National Statistical Office, for 100 ton less than small ship accident, the most of the shipping incident generated in the small ship by 84% of the total shipping incident in 2015. The radar obligatory mounting is enforced to the small vessel in order to conclude this problem. However, the problems including the maintenance cost and transmission power etc. happens high if the existing pulse radar is mounted in the small vessel. In this development, the development is for small ship fixed type radar the object. And in this paper, by using the phase array antenna revolving electronically around the beam, the antenna which it is applicable to the marine fixed type radar which can solve above problem was made and it tested.

  • Life rafts, which has been used for domestic vessel currently, are fabricated mostly for the ocean-going vessels in accordance with the SOLAS Resolution. Therefore, there is not any small-sized life raft which can be installed on small fishery boat, leisure boat and cargo vessel with those length shorter than 20 meters in our country. However, in many foreign countries, new standards or the small-sized life rafts applicable to those small vessel have been developed according to the standard of ISO 9650. Furthermore, they make their effort to contribute the safety for the life at sea by supply the superior product of life rafts, which have been adopted by light material (i.e. thermoplastic polyurethane, TPU) and economic production process (i.e. heat sealing, radio-frequency welding, RFW), etc. In this paper, the development results of the small-sized life raft, which has been used the lightening material TPU and fabricated by RF-welding method, will be introduced.

  • Pulmonary gangrene is a rare complication of severe pulmonary infection in which a pulmonary segment or lobe is sloughed. It is a part of a spectrum of disease in which lung tissue is devitalized(such as necrotizing pneumonia, pulmonary abscess), but apart from them, pulmonary gangrene has more extensive area of necrosis and thrombosis of large vessels plays a prominent role in the pathogenesis. We experienced a case of pulmonary gangrene in 71 year old female obstructive pneumonia patient with non-small cell lung carcinoma. She complained high fever, chill and despite treatment with antibiotics, pneumonia progressed to empyema. At that time chest radiograph showed a large cavity including sloughed lung tissue, freely moving to dependent position at both lateral decubitus view. RML and RLL were resected and compression of pulmonary vessels by enlarged lymph nodes was observed. Defervescence was obtained immediate postoperative period and the patient was discharged after infection control with antibiotics, chest tube drainage. The perivascular lymph nodes dissected during lobectomy were proved to be reactive hyperplasias. We speculated that the carcinoma caused obstructive pneumonia, in turn, resulted in reactive hyperplasia of the draining lymph nodes surrounding the large vessels and finally the lung tissues supplied by them necrotized and sloughed.
