Simple Anastomotic Techniques for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in Patients with Small Coronary Arteries or a Marked Size Discrepancy Between the Coronary Artery and Graft

  • Different suture techniques have been used for anastomosis in coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Bypass surgery may be difficult for patients who have small coronary arteries or marked size discrepancies between target coronary arteries and grafts. For proximal and distal anastomoses, three continuous stitches are first placed in the heel and toe of the small coronary arteries; for sequential anastomosis, an interrupted eight-stitch technique is used. We applied these anastomotic suture techniques in patients requiring coronary artery bypass graft surgery, achieving an early angiographic patency rate of 100%.

Cloning of Small Plasmids from Bacillus thuringiensis Subsp. israelensis Using Plasmid Capture System

  • Recently, we have developed an easy, simple and convenient circular DNA cloning system named plasmid capture system (PCS). To investigate usefulness of PCS in cloning of plasmids from Bacillus thuringiensis strains, PCS donors, pPCS-S and pPCS-L were applied to clone plasmids of B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis by in vitro transposition using 4{TnsABC^*}$ transposase. In result, 3 small plasmids were cloned, and these were consistent with pTX14-1, pTX14-2 and pTX14-3 reported previously from B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis. Therefore, the PCS can be successfully applied to clone small plasmids from B. thuringiensis strains.

  • The coolant temperature feedback coefficient is an important parameter of reactor core power control system. To study the coolant temperature feedback coefficient influence on the core power control system of small PWR, the core power control system is built with the nonlinear model and fuzzy control theory. Then, the uncertainty quantification method of reactor core parameters is established based on the Latin hypercube sampling method and the Bootstrap method. Finally, under the conditions of reactivity step perturbation and coolant inlet temperature step perturbation, uncertainty analysis for two cases is carried out. The result shows that with fuzzy controller and fuzzy PID controller, the uncertainty of the coolant temperature feedback coefficient affects the core power control system, and the maximum uncertainties of core relative power, coolant temperature deviation, fuel temperature deviation and total reactivity are acceptable.

Cytomegalovirus Pneumonia: High-Resolution CT Findings in Ten Non-AIDS Immunocompromised Patients

  • Objective: To describe the HRCT findings of cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonia in non-AIDS immunocompromised patients Materials and Methods: This retrospective study involved the ten all non-AIDS immunocompromised patients with biopsy-proven CMV pneumonia and without other pulmonary infection encountered at our Medical Center between January 1997 and May 1999. HRCT scans were retrospectively analysed by two chest radiologists and decisions regarding the findings were reached by consensus. Results: The most frequent CT pattern was ground-glass opacity, seen in all patients, with bilateral patchy (n = 8) and diffuse (n = 2) distribution. Other findings included poorly-defined small nodules (n = 9) and consolidation (n = 7). There was no zonal predominance. The small nodules, bilateral in eight cases and unilateral in one, were all located in the centrilobular region. Consolidation (n = 7), with patchy distribution, was bilateral in five of seven patients (71%). Pleural effusion and bilateral areas of thickened interlobular septa were seen in six patients (60%). Conclusion: CMV pneumonia in non-AIDS immunocompromised patients appears on HRCT scans as bilateral mixed areas of ground-glass opacity, poorly-defined centrilobular small nodules, and consolidation. Interlobular septal thickening and pleural effusion are frequently associated.

Circular Permutation of the DNA Genome of Temperate Bacteriophage $\PhiFC1$ from Enterococcus faecalis KBL 703

  • The physical map of bacteriophage $\PhiFC1$ DNA was constructed with the restriction endonucleases SalI, BamHI, EcoRI, XbaI, and AvaI. The 40.5-kb DNA restriction map is shown to be circularly permuted representing the headful packaging mechanism of the phage. The DNA restriction fragments containing the packaging initiation site(pac) was localized on the restriction map and the nucleotide sequences of the region were analyzed. Four open reading frames (ORFs), following one another with the same orientation, were found at the region. The 2nd ORF (ORF-ts) has significant amino acid sequence homologies to the previously known terminase small subunits of other bacteriophages. The putative terminase small subunit gene has a presumptive NTP-hydrolysis motif and a helix-turn-helix motif. The cleavage site for the first round of packaging was found to be located at the coding sequence of the putative terminase small subunit gene. The fourth ORF, even if partially sequenced, has a good amino acid sequence homology to the portal vertex proteins of other bacteriophages representing the evolutionarily conserved arrangements of genes near the pac site of this bacteriophage, $\PhiFC1$.

수학과 단계형 수준별 교육과정 편성.운영에 관한 연구 (A Study of Formation & Application of step-wise level curriculum of Mathematics)

  • The seventh curriculum put into operation gradually from first-year student in 2000 academic years of elementary school is subject to form and apply a step-wise level curriculum. Mathematics(correspond to junior high school course from 7th school year to 9th school year) should apply a step-wise level curriculum from 7th school year in 2001 academic years. Accordingly, mathematics teachers must diagnose actual conditions of educations, distribution tables of test results, step-wise teaching-studying programs etc. They also make proper plans suitable for actual situations of each school, prepare appropriate teaching materials and aids. I investigated preceding studies planned for preparation of putting into operation of a step-wise level curriculum. It showed that most of the studies were conducted at schools of medium or large scale and studies conducted at schools of small scale was rare. There were 113 small scale middle schools out of total 297 middle schools in Kyongsangbuk-do area in 2000. In this situation, I felt necessities of modeling of a step-wise level curriculum suitable for small scale schools. In this study, I modeled a step-wise level curriculum suitable for small scale middle schools, applied this model to 44 students in M middle school. I modeled two types of curriculum. One is a step-wise level curriculum that execute special supplementation process to students who do not complete 7-가 step successfully. The other is a step-wise level curriculum which is a regular model for a step-wise level of 7-나 step. I carried out an academic achievement test and intimacy test about mathematics before and after the application of the model. In this study, I found out that this model was very effective in academic achievement of students and helpful to declined students in scholarship. In the intimacy test, It was found out that most of the students gained confidence in mathematics, felt less anxiety, formed positive self consciousness. Therefore, I think that this model will be helpful to the application of the seventh step-wise level curriculum.

초등학교 수학 수업에서 소집단 학습의 적용 실태 분석 (A Survey on the Practice of Small-Group Instruction in Elementary School Mathematics)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 초등학교 수학 수업에서 소집단 학습의 적용 실태를 조사하여 분석하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 초등학교 교사 742명을 대상을 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 이 중 수학 수업에서 소집단 학습을 적용한다고 응답한 221명을 분석대상으로 하여 소집단 학습의 적용 실태를 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 수학 수업에서, '일제 학습을 하는 중간에 개별 활동을 하게 한다'고 응답한 교사는 55.5%였으며, '일제 학습 풍간에 소집단 활동을 하게 한다'는 응답은 27.8%였고, 소집단 학습을 위주로 수학 수업을 하는 교사는 단 2%에 불과하였다. 소집단 학습의 적용 실태와 관련하여 구체적으로 수학 수업에서 소집단 학습의 적용 정도 및 난점, 소집단 학습 시간 및 시기, 소집단 구성, 소집단 학습의 효과, 소집단 학습 모형 및 평가에 대하여 조사하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 하여 수학과 소집단 학습의 실태를 진단하고 바람직한 방향을 제시하였다.

소규모 공공시설 조사시 세천의 위험도 평가 방안 (Risk Assessment Improvement Method of Small Stream When Small Sized Hazard Infrastructures Survey)

  • 최근 기후변화로 인한 태풍, 국지성 집중호우 등 자연재해에 의한 피해가 급증하면서 행정안전부에서는 「소규모 공공시설 안전관리 등에 관한 법률(2016 개정)」을 제정하고 각 지자체별로 소규모 공공시설을 조사하여 국가재난안전관리시스템(NDMS)에 등록하고 매년 3월 31일까지 안전점검을 실시하고 있다. 이를 위해 최근 각 지자체별로 소규모 공공시설 안전점검 및 정비계획 수립 용역이 발주되어 세천, 소교량, 농로, 마을진입로, 취입보, 낙차공의 6가지 유형의 시설물을 조사하여 DB화 하고, 각 시설물별 위험도 평가를 수행하여 위험시설의 경우 정비계획을 수립하고 있다. 그러나 현재까지 배포된 소규모 공공시설의 위험도 평가 방법은 현장조사자의 육안조사를 통해 이루어지고 있으므로, 위험도 평가가 주관적이고 모호한 형태로 이루어지고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 소규모 공공시설 중 재해위험도가 가장 높은 세천에 대하여 위험도 정량평가지표를 제시함으로써 합리적이고 정량적인 위험도 평가가 이루어질 수 있도록 하였으며, 이를 통해 소규모 위험시설을 선정하여 정비계획 및 시행계획 수립에 있어 투명한 근거자료를 확보할 수 있도록 하였다.

Identification and Characterization of Protein Encoded by orf382 as $\small{L}$-Threonine Dehydrogenase

  • In the genome annotation of Escherichia coli MG1655, the orf382 (1,149 bp) is designated as a gene encoding an alcohol dehydrogenase that may be Fe-dependent. In this study, the gene was amplified from the genome by PCR and overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The recombinant $6{\times}$His-tag protein was then purified and characterized. In an enzymatic assay using different hydroxyl-containing substrates (n-butanol, $\small{L}$-threonine, ethanol, isopropanol, glucose, glycerol, $\small{L}$-serine, lactic acid, citric acid, methanol, or $\small{D}$-threonine), the enzyme showed the highest activity on $\small{L}$-threonine. Characterization of the mutant constructed using gene knockout of the orf382 also implied the function of the enzyme in the metabolism of $\small{L}$-threonine into glycine. Considering the presence of tested substrates in living E. coli cel ls and previous literature, we believed that the suitable nomenclature for the enzyme should be an $\small{L}$-threonine dehydrogenase (LTDH). When using $\small{L}$-threonine as the substrate, the enzyme exhibited the best catalytic performance at $39^{\circ}C$ and pH 9.8 with $NAD^+$ as the cofactor. The determination of the Km values towards $\small{L}$-threonine (Km = $11.29{\mu}M$), ethanol ($222.5{\mu}M$), and n-butanol ($8.02{\mu}M$) also confirmed the enzyme as an LTDH. Furthermore, the LTDH was shown to be an ion-containing protein based on inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry with an isoelectronic point of pH 5.4. Moreover, a circular dichroism analysis revealed that the metal ion was structurally and enzymatically essential, as its deprivation remarkably changed the ${\alpha}$-helix percentage (from 12.6% to 6.3%).

한국 저속 소형 연안어선의 저항성능 (Resistance Performance of Korean Small Coastal Fishing Boat in Low-Speed Range)

  • Korean small coastal fishing boats have the different kind of fisheries and customs against Japanese fishing boats. Those bring some influences on the principal parameters of hull form. In same displacement, Korean small coastal fishing boat has generally shorter length, draft and wider breadth than Japanese fishing boat. Furthermore, even though the parameters of each hull form are similar, it is known that the resistance performance of Korean small coastal fishing boat is worse than that of Japanese fishing boat. In this study, the representative hull forms of Korean and Japanese small coastal fishing boats are selected and compared to evaluate the resistance performance of Korean fishing boat in low-speed range. The hull form of the Korean fishing boat is modified as comparison with that of the Japanese fishing boat to confirm the partial characteristic differences between the hull forms and the resistance performances. The representative partial characteristics of hull form are the gradient of chine line, keel shape and stern length. The resistance performances of the modified hull forms are evaluated by INHAWAVE which is one of CFD program and model tests in towing tank. The results of the present study will be used to improve the resistance performance and to develop the practical hull form of Korean small coastal fishing boats as principal data in the preliminary hull form design of fishing boats.
