The Role of New Information and Communication Technologies in the Internationalization of Firms: A Case Study of Haier (기업의 국제화와 신 정보통신기술의 역할: 중국 Haier 기업을 사례로)

  • It is now widely recognized that new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have been changing the way tv which firms conduct their businesses. Examples are the application of enterprise resources planning (ERP) and business process reengineering (BPR) to increase the efficiency of internal resources management, adoption of Business-to-Business e-commerce (B2B e-com) to integrate supply chain, and invention of new marketing channels such as Business-to-Customer (B2C) e-com. These new ways of conducting businesses are believed to help firms to reduce transaction costs and increase productivity. As a result, new ICTs have played an important role in recent growth of many small firms into multi-functional and multi-product corporations and in their spatial expansion towards internationalization as well. This paper takes Haier in China as a case to study the role of new ICTs in the growth of firms and reveal how the new technologies have facilitated the expansion of Haier into a transnational corporation (TNC) by examining the internationalization process of the firm in relation to its adoption of new ICTs in the period from 1990 to 2002. The study reveals that the adoption of new Ins has helped Haier to integrate its functional units located in dozens of places across the world, which is essential to the internationalization of a firm, and to link closely together its worldwide suppliers and customers to achieve just-in-time (JIT) production and delivery.   • The smart factory is an important system that can reduce defects, maximize productivity, and respond to customer needs, from the labor-intensive era of traditional small and medium-sized manufacturing companies through the automation era to CPS using ICT. However, small and medium-sized manufacturers often fall short of the basic stage due to economic and environmental constraints, and there are many companies that do not even recognize the concept of a smart factory. In this situation, to expand the smart factory of small and medium-sized enterprises, the project to support the establishment of a smart factory for the win-win between large and small enterprises. The win-win smart factory construction support project provides a customized differentiation program support project according to the size and level of the company for all domestic manufacturing SMEs regardless of whether or not they are dealing with Samsung. In this study, we analyze the construction status and introduction performance of companies participating in the win-win smart factory support project to find out whether they have been helpful in management and to find efficient ways to improve support policies, and to suggest the direction of continuous support projects to improve the manufacturing competitiveness of SMEs in the future.

Moon Administration's ICT Startup Policy (문재인 정부의 ICT창업정책)

  • The Moon administration has proposed three major directions for startup growth: the creation of a new environment, active investment, and the creation of a virtuous cycle in venture investment. The policy is progressive but not sufficient to create a startup innovation boom in the current Korean economic environment. ICT Startup support policies must pay more attention to the product release stage. For growth of startups and small businesses it is important to establish a close value chain to secure competitiveness in the global market. It is necessary to secure a bridgehead to advance into the global market, including technical cooperation with large companies and joint advancement overseas. The final goal of the startup policy should be the continuous growth of the national economy and the expansion of employment. The establishment of fair trade and the strengthening of the startup ecosystem are important to foster a startup-friendly environment. Funding programs requires a shift from general support to enhanced choice and focus.

The Impact of ICT Costs on Innovation Activity of Digital Hubs in Regions of Kazakhstan: Universities, SMEs and R&D

  • Purpose: the study aims to examine the impact of ICT on the formation of digital hubs in regions of Kazakhstan, specifically the influence of ICT costs on the level of innovation activity of enterprises, the number of its actors as legal entities by size and region, small and medium enterprises, universities and research and development organisations. Research design, data and methodology: the research methodology is based on the collection of secondary data from the official statistical yearbooks of the Bureau of National Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the use of quantitative methods, in particular, correlation analysis and multiple regression. Five indicators related to the formation of digital hubs in the regions of the country were selected. Results: the study revealed that ICT spending has an impact on the formation of digital hubs in regions, in particular on the development of the number of legitimate enterprises, SMEs and R&D organisations as actors in digital hubs. A positive dynamic in the growth of the number of actors is visible. However, the hypotheses on the impact of ICT costs on the number of universities and the level of innovation activity were not supported. Conclusions: based on the results of the study, recommendations such as government proposals on strategy development, funding projects of innovation and digital hubs, and business proposals on engaging local entities in digital transformation for the formation of digital hubs in the country's regions have been developed.

  • Together with the emergence of Information and Communications Technology(ICT) and 4th Industrial Revolution, digital content is arising as a front-runner in the knowledge society. 21 century opened up an era of digital and cultural content, which is the industry to generating added values from future industries. This study aims to empirically examine the casual relation between three factors from Organizational Justice Theory Distributive, Procedural, Interactional Justices, and turnover intention through Organizational Immersion. A sample group for the analysis was employees at small/medium-sized digital content businesses with less than 60 workers. 200 questionnaires were distributed to the group for a week from July 22 to 28, 2019. 154 responses were collected and analyzed in this study, after eliminating 4 poor responses. The result of the study on Organizational Justice at digital content businesses showed that, first, Distributive Justice of the employees showed a positive influence on Organizational Immersion. Second, the employees' Procedural Justice showed a positive influence on Organizational Immersion. Third, the employee' Interactional Justice showed a positive influence on Organizational Immersion. Fourth, the employees' Organizational Immersion showed a positive influence on their turnover intention.

A Study on the Influence of Self-driving Patents on the Firm Performance in the Automotive Parts Industry (자율주행 관련 특허의 자동차 부품 산업 내 기업 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 분석)

  • Self-driving technology is changing the paradigm of automotive industry. Since it is imperative to converge this emerging technology with ICT and there is a time lag between securing this emerging technology and occurrence of firm performance, it is difficult to make decisions on technology development. This study investigates patent indicators to understand the impact of self-driving technology on performance of automotive parts companies. We analyze 611 of self-driving technology patents from 2000 to 2016 and the financial performance of 270 small and medium businesses that register the corresponding patents with consideration of up to four years of time lag. Our analysis results show that patents related to self-driving has a positive impact on asset growth of 2 years and sales growth of 3 years in terms of time lag. This study contributes to the literature by analyzing the impact of technology development on the firm performance in case of convergence of the automotive and ICT industries. Additionally, this study provides a role of patent in knowledge management planning through technology development as a practical implication.

Smart Factory Activation Plan through Analysis of Smart Factory Promotion Status and Introduction Plan Data

  • A smart factory is defined as a cutting-edge, intelligent factory that integrates all production processes from product planning to sales with information and communication technology. Through these factories, each company produces customized products with minimal cost and time. The smart factory promotion project in Korea has produced positive results even in difficult environments such as the COVID-19 situation. Through the transition to a smart manufacturing production system, the competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses has been greatly strengthened, including increased productivity and reduced costs. This study was based on surveyed data conducted by organizations related to smart factory promotion in 2020. Significant contents and major characteristics that emerged from the surveyed data were inferred and described. Since the meaningful contents reflect the reality of the company, more efficient promotion of smart factories will be possible in the future.

Development of Interactive Signage using Floating Hologram (플로팅 홀로그램을 이용한 인터랙티브 사이니지 개발)

  • We have developed an interactive signage system based on floating hologram by combining hologram technology and ICT technology, which can be competitive to small businesses that have excellent products and services. The developed interactive signage system can be used for publicity and marketing of small business owners at low cost, introducing menus with 3D hologram images, and providing various contents responding to user's hand movements. The developed system is able to detect 10 finger movements at a rate of 290 frames per second in a range of 60cm and a range of 150 degrees. We also confirmed that the virtual touch function operates normally by dividing the user's motion recognition into the hover zone and the touch zone by the physical motion experiment of the leap motion object.

  • It is not easy to implement an energy management system in an industrial complex where small businesses are scattered, so the method of collecting and adjusting energy-related data is mainly used. FEMS is a system that responds to the demand for a paradigm shift from a passive energy management method to an active energy management method using IoT and ICT. In this study, a factory energy management system(FEMS) is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises located in chemical industrial complexes. Efficiency was confirmed by reviewing energy saving measures and efficiencies through FEMS for the electric energy of facilities built in each company. The cost effectiveness of FEMS is created when it is utilized by responsible and empowered personnel within the business processes of the host company. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize EMS that can be applied to the planning, support, operation and evaluation, and continuous improvement of the energy management system to achieve corporate organization and energy management goals.

  • The Privacy Impact Assessment, PIPA in Korea refers to the process of analyzing risk factors and identifying improvements that must be carried out by organizations that operate personal information files as stipulated in Article 33 of the Personal Information Protection Act, PIPA and Article 35 of the Enforcement Decree of the PIPA. There are two main limitations of the PIA in Korea. The first limitation is that the targets of the PIA are limited to public institutions and organizations that are legally equivalent to public institutions, and the second limitation is that only organizations with adequate manpower, facilities, and other necessary requirements which are regulated upon the Enforcement Decree of the PIPA can conduct a PIA. This paper proposes to develop a preliminary diagnostic tool that can be performed by private companies, small and medium-sized venture companies, and small businesses in the era of rapidly developing data in recent years and presents an analysis of specific assessment factors. The results of this study are provided in the form of a self-checklist, which is expected to serve as a pre-diagnostic tool for the PIA that can be easily accessed by the general public. It is also expected to contribute to strengthening privacy protection and achieving legal compliance at the national level.
