  • The generation of small hydropower as compared to other different developed environmental methods produces one of the clean energies. In such manner, various application system development through IT technique is being developed for an advanced small hydropower energy resources data mining. However, existing data analysis of New & Renewable Information System for small hydropower resources application is incomplete therefore it limits expressing these information on the Web. Thus for positive usage of small hydropower resources, a more systematic and precise analysis system should be built. This study seeks to develop a map of the domestic small hydropower resources problems to further improve small hydropower resources, developed through Package Tool which can accurately evaluate a wide range of small hydropower basin in a short period of time. Small hydropower Package Tool was calculated using existing Analysis System small hydropower resources which did not provide diverse capabilities resulting to 840 standard basin classified by A and facility capacity, etc., and to assume a 40% annual capacity, expected annual electricity production was calculated. Small hydropower for the national water system of small hydropower resources potential calculated in terms of resources for the development of small hydropower will be utilized as basic data.

  • Small hydropower resources for five major river systems have been studied. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to analyze the variation of inflow caused from rainfall condition. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for small hydropower(SHP) plants is established. Monthly inflow data measured at Andong dam were analyzed. The predicted results from the developed models in this study showed that the data were in good agreement with measured results of long term inflow at Andong dam. It was found that the models developed in this study can be used to predict the available potential and technical potential of SHP sites effectively. Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance for small hydropower sites located in river systems have been analyzed. The results show that the hydrologic performance characteristics of SHP sites have some difference between the river systems. Especially, the specific design flowrate and specific output of SHP sites located on North Han river and Nakdong river systems have large difference compared with other river systems.

  • The alarming climate change impacts are demanding the use of renewable energy sources like never before. Hydropower is one of the most cost-effective and environmental friendly energy technology recognized in the world. Big hydropower projects come up with the requirements of huge investment costs along with environmental impacts, whereas small hydropower(SHP) are considered a best solution for the economical source of energy. SHP, basically Run-of-River (RoR) type plants can be sustainable renewable energy sources and given the nature of perennial rivers flowing from steep gradient and rugged topography, feasibility of such plants is equally high in Nepal. The objective of this study is to determine the primary potential sites for the development of RoR type SHP sites using Geo-spatial Information System(GSIS). The use of GSIS enables precise survey of large area within a short period of time. This study has focused on the determination of locations by establishing defined criterions and methodologies and hence have located multiple locations rather than selecting one best location. The approach is applicable for the rapid initial screening of potential locations and results can facilitate detail feasibility study for the technical and economic analysis of SHP in the basin.

  • This study presents a framework for optimum scale determination for small hydropower development in a river basin. The framework includes the construction of hydrology and topography data, the simulation of hydropower operation, the economic analysis, and the determination of optimum scale of the small hydropower. The optimum scale of design flow and facility are determined by Net Present Value among economic analysis indices. The investment cost is estimated by the cost function derived from the construction cost of existing small hydropower plants. The benefit from power generation is estimated by the price announced by government. The presented framework is applied to the two potential sites in Cho River basin for the dam and run-of-river type of plants. Finally, the sensitivity analysis for a design flow and scale of the plant is performed for the each site. The usage of the framework presented in the study is highly expected for the estimation of potential hydropower resources or the decision support tool for a proprietor by estimating the optimum scale and economical feasibility in advance.

  • Small hydropower is the one of the cleanest one among new and renewable energy with less green house gas emissions. Recently, the necessity of developing small hydropower is emerging since its remaining potential resources in this country are abundant. However, a survey or research on the small hydropower development has been hardly performed since the 1990#s. These circumstances encourages a systematic approach for the small hydropower development. The purpose of this study is to propose a methodology of the location analysis for developing small hydropower. To this end, constraint and location criteria with weights are established and quantification method of each factor is presented. Especially, the analysis procedure is established on the basis of GSIS. Also the study focus on raising the objectivity and precision of analysis by developing system model with automatic search. The proposed methodology is applied to Bochung stream in Keum Riverbasin. The result selects the four and two locations of dam type and run-of-river type respectively. This study will be beneficial to the future activation of small hydropower development as a fundamental work.

  • Micro hydraulic turbines take a growing interest because of its small and simple structure as well as high possibility of applying to micro and small hydropower resources. The differential pressure exiting within the city water pipelines can be used efficiently to generate electricity like the energy generated through gravitational potential energy in dams. In order to reduce water pressure at the inlet of water cleaning centers, pressure reducing valves are used widely. Therefore, pressure energy is wasted. Instead of using the pressure reduction valve, a micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine can be replaced to get energy caused by the large differential pressure found in the city water pipelines. In this study, in order to acquire design data of counter-rotating tubular type micro-turbine, output power, head, and efficiency characteristics due to the diffuser.

  • Small-scale hydropower projects at existing agricultural reservoirs can contribute to produce electric energy by maximizing the use of releases from the reservoirs. The irrigation water duration, the reservoir hydropower simulation, and the nonlinear programming model are employed to estimate potential hydroelectric energy at an existing reservoir. The nonlinear programming model consists of finding a maximum hydroelectric energy subject to irrigation water demand constraints. The sample reservoir given a set of inflow and irrigation water is considered. The optimal solutions by the optimization model yield the most hydroelectric energy for the analysis period in the three methods. Consequently, the nonlinear programming model uses the most water for hydropower generation with respect to the total inflow of the sample reservoir. It is also found that additional storage by increasing the normal water level of the sample reservoir does not significantly increase the annual hydroelectric energy for the given reservoir. It is expected that the optimization model and the proposed procedure for estimating potential hydroelectric energy can be applied to evaluate feasibility analysis for small scale hydropower additions at existing agricultural dams.
