Estimation of Small Area Proportions Based on Logistic Mixed Model

  • We consider a logistic model with random effects as the superpopulation for estimating the small area pro-portions. The best linear unbiased predictor under linear mired model is popular in small area estimation. We use this type of estimator under logistic mixed motel for the small area proportions, on which the estimation of mean squared error is also discussed. Two kinds of estimation methods, the parametric bootstrap and the linear approximation will be compared through a Monte Carlo study in the respects of the normality assumption on the random effects distribution and also the magnitude of sample sizes on the approximation.

  • Analysis of health care utilization is very important for health care policy development. Traditional studies of health care utilization were focused on measuring the level of health care utilization and on analyzing the determinants of health care utilization in the defined areas and populations. But there were some limitations in comparing the health care utilizations rates in traditional studies because so many factors were to be considered. Small area analysis is a method used to demonstrate substantial variations in health care utilization with popualtion-base use rates among similar geographic areas. This review discusses the methods, magnitude and trend of geographic variations, factors influencing small area variations, and makes suggestions for further study. Finally, the article discusses the necessity and feasibility of small area analysis in Korea.

An Empirical Approach to Evaluate Management Performance Using a Trading Area Analysis: Focus on Small and Medium-sized Retail Businesses

  • Purpose - This paper proposes measurement models to evaluate the management performance of small and medium-sized retail businesses on the basis of a trading area analysis that compares their proposed revenue to actual revenue in the trading area. Research design, data, methodology - The study proposes measurement models consisting of five stages, namely: (1) district background survey, (2) customer survey, (3) competitor survey, (4) business district survey, and (5) business performance analysis. Results - To identify business districts easily, this study preferred a minor-adjusted method based on the Euclidean distance, as it is simple to employ for the small and medium-sized businesses. This model was applied to select coffee shops in Daejeon. Results indicated that although the targeted shop was not located in an appropriate location, actual sales were higher than expected. Conclusions - Small- or medium-sized retail businesses face difficulties regarding the economies of scale and brand recognition and must choose an appropriate location to ensure management stability. However, such businesses will find it difficult to evaluate their competitive edge accurately using a trading area analysis.

Estimating small area proportions with kernel logistic regressions models

  • Unit level logistic regression model with mixed effects has been used for estimating small area proportions, which treats the spatial effects as random effects and assumes linearity between the logistic link and the covariates. However, when the functional form of the relationship between the logistic link and the covariates is not linear, it may lead to biased estimators of the small area proportions. In this paper, we relax the linearity assumption and propose two types of kernel-based logistic regression models for estimating small area proportions. We also demonstrate the efficiency of our propose models using simulated data and real data.

  • 소지역 추정을 위해 널리 사용되고 있는 방법 중 하나는 선형혼합효과모형이다. 그러나 종속변수와 독립변수 사이의 관계가 비선형일 때 이 모형은 소지역 관련 모수에 대해 편의된 추정값을 초래한다. 본 논문에서는 M-분위수 커널회귀를 사용하여 소지역의 평균을 추정하는 방법을 제안한다. 그리고 모의실험을 통하여 서포트벡터분위수회귀와 성능을 비교함으로써 제안된 방법의 우수성을 보인다.

  • The safety management of the small sized enterprise is very important to decrease industrial disaster in the area of industry. On this research, to give the effective measures to decrease industrial disaster, we administered the workplaces in Kyunggi area to search actual condition of industrial disaster and to disclose a link between industrial and industrial safety management. The results show industrial accident characteristics of small sized enterprises in Kyunggi area. So it is shows that we need to put in effective safety political measures to small sized enterprises.

  • 지방자치제의 정착으로 시군구 단위의 통계 작성이 요구되었을 뿐만 아니라 IMF사태로 실업자 통계가 정치 사회적인 이슈가 되면서 시군구별 실업자통계 작성이 필요성이 제기 되었다. 현재의 경활조사 체계에서 시군구별 실업통계를 작성할 수 있는 2종의 소지역 추정법을 제안하고 실제 경활조사 자료를 이용하여 충북 시군구별 실업자를 추정하고 추정법의 효율을 비교하여 소지역 추정법의 적용 가능성을 입증하였다.

Bayesian small area estimations with measurement errors

  • This paper considers Bayes estimations of the small area means under Fay-Herriot model with measurement errors. We provide empirical Bayes predictors of small area means with the corresponding jackknifed mean squared prediction errors. Also we obtain hierarchical Bayes predictors and the corresponding posterior standard deviations using Gibbs sampling. Numerical studies are provided to illustrate our methods and compare their eciencies.

  • 최근 들어 소지역 추정 문제를 해결하는데 베이지안 방법이 주목을 받고 있다. 본 논문에서는 고객집단별 보험금에 대한 실제 자료를 MCMC 기법을 통한 계층적 베이지안 모형과 일원분류, GLM-Normal, GLM-Gamma 모형으로 분석하여 그 결과를 비교하였다. 결론적으로 소지역 추정에 의하여 얻어진 보험금 추정량이 다른 방법으로부터 얻어진 추정량들과 비교하여 가장 합리적이고 좋은 추정량임을 보일 수 있었다. 특히, 표본 수가 적은 집단에 대하여 소지역 추정의 정확성이 현저하게 높음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Nowadays, the number of school students in rural area has decreased significantly. For this reason, there are mixed classes among students of different grades in schools in rural area. Moreover, there are several teachers who teach two and more subjects except for the major of teacher so educational environment has been deteriorated. To tackle this problem, the ministry of education has suggested merging small schools in rural area. However, some people believe that merging small schools would make educational environment more worse and would not solve this problem. To solve this problem, this research suggests that the proper solution for educational environment of merging small schools through surveying environment of merging schools.
