  • The possibility of using lime/mineral solvent solutions has been investigated to effectively remove T-P from wastewater. The lime solvent solution showed an initial T-P removal efficiency of about 90% compared to the less efficient mineral solvent solution removal. High pH and dissolved Ca2+ can form hydroxyapatite minerals (Ca5(PO4)3(OH) or Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and can also remove SS and COD from wastewater. Feldspar dissolution solution can be reused twice because the Ca limited sample content provided, but further research is needed to discover other influencing parameters that control the T-P removal efficiency in real wastewater. Because it plays an important role of alkalinity in T-P removal, the success rate is limited. In practical applications, it is obtained according to the pH value wastewater in the environment. The results obtained in this study can highlight new insights on the use of limestone/dissolved mineral solutions to control T-P in wastewater, instead of directly using commercial chemical agents that can produce large amounts of unreacted chemical sludge.

  • The paper board sludge(PBS) itself and compost sludge manure(CSM) mixed with sawdust, fowl droppings and urea to the PBS were treated to soybean plants to find the effects of growing characters, yield components, and nutritional compounds in the plant tissues. 1. Percentages of missing plants were 5-9% and 3.6-4.1% in the treatments of PBS and CSM, respectively. After that, the plants were restored to normal conditions. Anyway it is not desirable to use the paper board sludge and immature compost sludge manure in seeding time or to young seedlings. 2. Growth of the plant height was retarded in early growing phase, but it was normal in later stages. And the width and length of the largest leaf, numbers of main stem nodes and pods were not significant among the treatments. 3. The yield intends to increase through the treatments of 1,200, 1,600, and 2,000Kg PBS per 10a. In the CSM treatments with high rate of sawdust, fowl droppings and urea, the numbers of pods and grains were higher than the treatment of high content of PBS. 100-grain and one liter weights were opposite intention. It was suggested that the excess nitrogen amounts from the compost sludge manure than conventional fertilization affected to the yield components. 4. The contents of the main chemical compounds such as N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, Ca, Mg were determined. The concentrations of nitrogen were higher in the treatment of PBS and CSM than none and control. 5. In conclusion, the nutritional effects of PBS were in evidence. To use the sludges, it should be fermented with adequate additives to improve the aeration, C/N ratio, activity of microbial, and other conditions. The sludges could be used to crops as a fertilizers effectively.

  • Population growths of earthworm were investigated when the earthworm populations with different levels of initial densities per unit area were fed with cow dung mixed with paper mill sludge. The tested levels of earthworm densities were as follows; $1kg/m^2$, $2kg/m^2$, $3kg/m^2$, $5kg/m^2$. There were no significant differences in population growth rates 60 and 90 days after feed supply among the tested densities of earthworm. Therefore, it was suggested that initial densities of earthworm populations per unit area higher than $3kg/m^2$ should not be favorable because of the cost for purchasing earthworm. Vermicomposting rates of earthworm on feed were also investigated when different amounts of feed were supplied repeatedly to unit area of nursery bed with $5kg/m^2$ of initial densities earthworm populations. The tested amounts of feed at each supplying time were as follows; $16kg/m^2$, $24kg/m^2$, $32kg/m^2$, $40kg/m^2$. The more the amount of feed at each supplying time, the higher vermicomposting rate and population growth rate. Therefore, it should be more favorable for earthworm breeders to supply more than $40kg/m^2$ of feed at each supplying time, because it would reduce time and labor cost.

  • There have been increasing interests in the odor generation problems as concerns about the quality of life has been increased recently. Especially, approximately 67% of the odor complaints from environmental facilities are those from sewage treatment facilities and food waste treatment facilities. Moreover, sewage ocean dumping will be prohibited from 2012 by the international and domestic ocean laws, and thus, demand for alternative management plans is increasing. Therefore, it was first selected 5 sewage treatment facilities and 5 food waste treatment facilities where the amounts of waste are relatively immense in Busan, and collect their sludge samples. Then it was investigated the samples' physical and chemical characteristics through proximate analysis, elemental analysis, XRF analysis, and calorific value analysis. Finally, estimate the $H_2S$ emission rates were estimated in order to apply the results as the basic data for providing the fundamental solution for the oder complaints. As a result, the concentration of $H_2S$ in sewage sludge and in food waste treatment facility were 57.3 mg/kg and 19.7 mg/kg in average, respectively. Finally, the units of $H_2S$ in wastes stored in total 10 waste treatment facilities was estimated 16,017,910.0 mg/d.

  • With the economic development of Korea, sewage treatment facilities and waste food treatment facilities have been steadily increased. These facilities have positive effects such as the conservation of the water resources quality and waste food recycling while they also affect the neighborhood life with severe odor problems. Therefore, it was first collected sludge samples from 5 sewage treatment facilities and 5 waste food treatment facilities where the amounts of waste produced from above sites are relatively immense in Busan and estimate the $H_2S$ emission rates. Then it was selected 1 sample which has the highest emission rate of $H_2S$. Using flux chamber and GC/FPD analyses, it was tried to quantify the emitted amount of sulfonic gas concentration under anoxic condition. The sludge sample obtained from Noksan sewage treatment facility has the highest emission rate of $H_2S$. This sample contained 156.18 mg/kg $H_2S$. The odor compounds were analyzed using GC/FPD and the concentrations were converted to odor quotient. Among odor compounds the ratio of $CH_3SH$ (methylmercaptan) for the total odor quotient was 47.3% and considered to be the main odor compound in the sample.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various kinds of composts on the amount of maximum composts in upland soils. Field experiments were conducted in the loam and sandy loam soils. Various kinds of composts such as poultry manure compost(PMC), cow manure compost(CMC), human excrement sludge(HES), and food industrial sludge compost(FISC) were applied annually at rates of 0, 40, and $80Mg\;ha^{-1}$ to soils grown with soybean and maize plants for 4 years during 1994 to 1997. The results of this study were as follows : Maize dry matter production was related linearly positively with application amount of compost, but soybean dry matter production was showed an apex at $60Mg\;ha^{-1}$, maize produced 4.7 times dry matter as compared to soybean. Rate of nitrogen utilization of maize were 21~31% and that of soybean were 8~19%, rate of phosphorous utilization of maize were 5~7% and that of soybean were l~2%. On the basis of biomass maximum application rates of poultry manure compost were $39{\sim}47Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for maize cultivation and $8{\sim}13Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for soybean cultivation. On the other hand those amounts estimated by nitrogen requirement of crops were 39~47 and $8{\sim}13Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for maize and soybean cultivation, respectively. Based on phosphorous requirement of crops those were 29 and $14Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for maize and soybean cultivation, respectively. Considering the upper limit of the base saturation percentage to be 80%, maximum application rates were 63~93 and $49{\sim}69Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in loam and sandy loam soil, respectively.

  • The feasibility of simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal by enhancing anoxic phosphorus uptake was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). By introducing an anoxic phase into an anaerobic-aerobic SBR (AO SBR), significant amounts of denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (DPAOs) which can utilize nitrate as electron acceptor could be accumulated in the reactor (anaerobic-aerobic- anoxic-aerobic SBR, $(AO)_2$ SBR). A direct comparison of phosphorus uptake rate under anaerobic and aerobic conditions showed that the fraction of DPAOs in P-removing sludge were increased from 10% in the AO SBR to 64% in $(AO)_2$ SBR. The $(AO)_2$ SBR showed stable phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency: average removal efficiencies of TOC, total nitrogen, and phosphorus were 92%, 88%, and 100%. respectively. Results of the $(AO)_2$ SBR operation and batch tests showed that nitrite (up to 10 mg-N/L) was not detrimental to anoxic phosphorus uptake and could serve as good electron acceptor like nitrate.

  • A water soluble polymer, polycondensate of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin (PBE), was synthesized by condensation of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin. The characteristics of PBE were determined by IR spectroscopy, low angle light scattering measurement, and $\zeta$ potential measurement. Its interactions with colloidal bentonite particles in aqueous medium were also studied. The results of the studies are as follows : PBE is a cationic polyelectrolyte carrying tertiary ammonium ions on its backbone. The average molecular weight of PBE is found to be about 1,600. The adsorption of PBE on the colloidal bentonite particles are well described with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As the amounts of PBE adsorbed on the bentonite particles increase, the $\zeta$ potential of the particles changes its sign from negative to positive. This inversion of charge confirms that PBE is cationic in nature. The adsorption of PBE onto the bentonite particles was found to occur through cation exchange reaction. It has been shown that PBE has flocculation effects on the colloidal suspension of bentonite. It has also enhanced effects of filtrability on the digested sludge.

  • In these days, there has been increased focus on global warming and the exhaustion of resources recently caused by the heavy consumption of fossil resources. In order to resolve these problems, biomass is increasingly gaining international attention as a renewable energy source. Biogas derived from various biomass is environmental friendly alternative fuel for power generation, heating and vehicle fuel. Large amounts of sewage sludge, food waste and manure are generated from human activity, but these organic wastes contain high levels of organic matter and thus they are potential substrates for producing methane of biogas. The biogas contains 60% of highly concentrated methane, which is expected to be used effectively as energy. In this paper, we investigate the status of biogas in Korea as an alternative energy.

  • This work examined the effect of mixing transition metal-based additives [FeCl3, Fe-containing paper mill sludge (PMS), CoCl2·H2O, ZrO2, and α-Fe2O3] on the thermochemical conversion of coffee waste (CW) in carbon dioxide-assisted pyrolysis process. Compared to the generation amounts of syngas (0.7 mole% H2 & 3.0 mole% CO) at 700℃ from single pyrolysis of CW, co-pyrolysis in the presence of Fe- or Zr-based additives resulted in the enhanced production of syngas, with the measured concentrations of H2 and CO ranging 1.1-3.4 mole% and 4.6-13.2 mole% at the same temperature, respectively. In addition, α-Fe2O3 biochar possessed the adsorption capacity of As(V) (19.3 mg g-1) comparable to that of ZrO2-biochar (21.2 mg g-1). In conclusion, solid-type Fe-based additive can be highly considered as an efficient catalyst to simultaneously produce syngas (H2 & CO) as fuel energy resource and metal-biochar as sorbent.
