  • Along with the expansion of industrial activities, the quantity of industrial waste sludge is increasing, and the treatment/disposal of wastes is a social problem regarding the preservation of the environment. In particular, recycling the sludge as a raw material is actively required considering the situation of Korea, which is poor in natural resources and energy. Lime is a necessity for treatment of waste sludge, which often can be made recyclable by lime treatment. In this thesis, a brief description has been given of my views on the ordinary treatment of waste sludge and the effective use of inorganic industrial waste sludge focusing on lime.

  • Silicon wafer is used in making semiconductor device of various forms in the semiconductor industry. Silicon wafer is produced by cutting silicon ingot and sludge containing silicon results from cutting process. The amount of silicon sludge is increasing owing to the usage of semiconductor device in many industry sectors. These days the recycling technologies of the waste silicon sludge has been widely studied from view point of economy and efficiency. In this study, patents on the recycling technologies of the waste silicon sludge were analyzed. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA, European Union, Japan, and Korea up to september, 2007. Patents were collected using key-words and filtered by filtering criteria. The trend of the patents was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • This paper explained about the sludge recycling system which retrieved the silicon and abrasive from solar cell wafer slicing. The basic process of the recycling system was multiple centrifuge and secondary processes of ultra sonic agitation, addition of alcohol-water solution and heating sludge was added for raising separation efficiency. The recycling rate was about 96% and 94% for 2N, 4N silicon respectively. The SiC abrasive recycling rate was about 80%. To retrieve the high purity of 4N silicon, the heat process in vacuum furnace was added to remove remaining impurity components.

  • The pond sludge from golf course which is a place of business waste that recycling is necessary. But, Most pond sludge was controlled by incineration and reclamation. Also, There are no research about pond sludge from waste point of view. The purpose of this study was focusing on recycling of pond sludge to make block of vegetation. In this study, in order to recycle the pond sludge with block of vegetation from mixed additive that analyzed characteristics of strength from compaction test and shear strength test.

  • Nightsoil and brewery sludges usually contain a high concentration of organic matters. A composting study using reactors was carried out for the recycle of brewery wastewater sludge and nightsoil treatment sludge, which have been landfilled. A good composting process was obtained with a sludge mixing ratio of 1:1 and injual pH had no effect on temperature increase related to microbial activity. The injtial C/N ratio at approximarely 15 decreased to 13 without the increase in pH.. It was found that agitation of one time a week provided the most effective composting process.

  • This study on the incineration ash and sintering pellet from sewage sludge was carried out to evaluate the possibility of recycling in sewage sludge disposal. The samples used in this experiment were raw sewage sludge, its incineration ash, and sintering pellet. The characteristics of the three sample types were identified using X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray fluorescence(XRF), atomic absorption spectroscopy(AAS), and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy(ICP). The chemical compositions of all three sample types were similar in their clay component, however, the sewage sludge had a high content of organic materials. From an analysis of the mineral content of the three sample types, the conversion of their compositions was found to be relative to temperature. Accordingly, incineration ash and sintering pellet both have potential for use as a functional construction material.

  • Stainless steel sludge is generated as a waste in the grinding process, and the possibility of recycling stainless steel is considered here. In this study, we considered the possibility of using the stainless steel sludge as metal powder for MIM or raw material for metal foam. For the MIM process, the metal powder will need some improvement, and flotation and spheroidizing processes of the sludge are necessary. For fabrication of the metal foam, untreated sludge can be used, and steel foam about 90% porosity is produced.

Recovery of Copper from Sludge of Copper Electro-Plating Plant (동전해도금공장 Sludge로부터 동의 회수)

  • The metallic copper was recovered from sludge of the copper electro-plating plant by pyrometallurgical process. The reducing agent was Pyrolysized from waste tires and the flux was a mixture $Na_2CO_3$, $NaB_4O_7$, and glass. The green sludge contained 87.5% moisture and 12.5% solid with 56.5% Cu and 1.59% Fe. The sludge dried at $100^{\circ}C$ was analyized to be $Cu_4SO_4(OH)_6{\cdot}2H_2O$ and CuO by XRD analysis. The former was 84% and the latter 16%, However, the calcined sludge at $500^{\circ}C$ was 49% $Cu_2O(SO_4)$ and 51% CuO. The sludge could by smelted at $1100^{\circ}C$ for two hours with 6 to 8 moles carbon with respect to copper to produce metallic copper (>90%) with recovery of 9% above.

Estimation of Optimal Operation Conditions in Step Feed Processes Based on Stoichiometric Nitrogen Removal Reactions

  • Step feed process was analyzed stoichiometrically for the optimal operation conditions in this study. In case of optimal operation conditions, minimum R (sludge recycling) value, r (internal recycling ratio) value, and n (influent allocation ratio) value for the step feed process to acquire the maximum TN removal efficiency were identified by theoretical analysis. Maximum TN removal efficiency, based on stoichiometric reaction, can be obtained by controlling n value for the step feed process.

A Study on the recycling of sewage sludge cake using microwave drying (하수슬러지 케이크의 마이크로파 건조 후 재활용 연구)

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate various reclamation methods of sewage sludge cake after treating with microwave under optimum conditions. In this study the sewage sludge cakes used from S and N wastewater treatment plants in the P city. Microwave with an induced electricity heating way was employed for dehydration of sewage sludge cake. Microwave operation conditions is 2,450 MHz of frequency and the power with 1 to 4 kW. This sewage sludge cake had a moisture content of 70%. The moisture content of the sludge decreased notable up to 2%(wt) resulted in breaking of cell wall. When the treated sewage sludge cake mixed with soils could be applied to use midterm and last cover material soils. Moreover, the adsorption ability of heavy metals such as copper, lead, chromium and cadmium was greatly enhanced by treated sewage sludge cake. Within 30 minutes, 1ppm of copper, chromium and cadmium and 10ppm of lead with 1g of the treated sewage sludge cake in $100m{\ell}$ were below detection. It was possible to use the treated sewage sludge cake as an absorbent for absorption of toxic heavy metals. Results from this research indicated that using of microwave radiation was an effective method for treating sewage sludge cake economically and environmental. A point of view of reclamation, the treated sewage sludge cake appeared to be feasible with an adsorption of heavy metals in steady of using expensive yellow earth.
