  • The purpose of this paper is to generate a pitch contour which is affected by tile phonetic environment and the number of syllables in each Korean isolated word using a neural network. To do this, we analyzed a set of 513 Korean isolated words, consisting of 1-4 syllables and extracted the pitch contour and the duration of each phoneme in all the words. The total number of phonemes we analyzed is about 3800. After that we approximated the pitch contour with a 1st order polynominal by a regression analysis. We could get the slope, the initial pitch and the duration of each phoneme. We used these 3 parameters as the target pattern of the neural network and let the neural network learn the rule of the variation of the pitch and duration, which was affected by the phonetic environment of each phoneme. We used 7 consecutive phoneme strings as an input pattern for a neural network to make the network learn the effect of phonetic environment around the center phoneme. In the learning phase, we used 3545 items(463 words) as target patterns which contained the phonetic environment of front and rear 3 phonemes and the neural network showed the correctness rate of 98.43%, 98.59%, 97.7% in the estimation of the duration, the slope, the initial pitch. In the recall phase, we tested the performance of tile neural network with 251 items(50 words) which weren't need as learning data and we could get the good correctness rate of 97.34%, 95.45%, 96.3% in the generation of the duration, the slope, and the initial pitch of each phoneme.

  • This study aims to assess the influence of rainfall patterns on shallow landslides initiation. Doing so, five typical rainfall patterns with the same cumulative amount and intensity components comprising Advanced (A1 and A2), Centralized (C), and Delayed (D1 and D2) were designed based on a historical rainstorm event in Jinbu. Mt area. Those patterns were incorporated as the hydrological conditions into the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability Model (TRIGRS) to assess their influences on groundwater pressure and changes in the stability of the slope. The results revealed that not only the cumulative rainfall thresholds necessary to initiate landslides, but also the rate at which the factor of safety decreases and the time required to reach the critical state, are governed by rainfall patterns. The sooner the peak rainfall intensity, the smaller the cumulative rainfall threshold, and the shorter the time until landslide occurrence. Left-skewed patterns were found to have a greater effect on landslide initiation. Specifically, among five rainfalls, pattern (A1) produced the most critical state. The severity of response was followed by patterns A2, C, D1, and D2. Our conclusion is that rainfall patterns have a significant effect on the cumulative rainfall threshold, the build-up of groundwater pressure, and the occurrence of shallow landslides.

  • A light deflector integrated laser diode(LD) was fabricated and the characteristics of LD and ourput beam deflection as a function of deflector injection current were measured. To integrate the deflector with LD, a passive waveguide was integrated with the LD and a triangular-type light deflector was fabricated on the upper clad of the passive waveguide section. Light deflection from the fabricated light deflector is controlled by the effective refractive index variation induced by carrier injection. To characterize the effect of the deflector injection current, threshold current, slope efficiency, and output beam spectrum were measured as a function of deflector injection current. From these measured data, the increment in the threshold current and the decrement of the slope efficiency were observed. However, the output beam spectrum was not affected by the deflector. The Beam Propagation Method(BPM) was used to simulate the proposed device and the light deflection was measured by the far-field pattern of the output beam as a function of the deflector injection current. In the fabricated deflector integrated LD, the deflection angle of 1.9$^{\circ}$ at the injection current of 15 ㎃ was obtained.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the clothing life of the children between the nine to twelve by making a scientific and rational basic bodice pattern. The comparison of the eight pattern drafting currently used in Korea was referred in order to make new basic pattern. Three hundred fifty-two subjects from 9 to 12 years old in Seoul area were measured on 19 items. The measurements (24 items including 19 measured items and 5 drafted items that were difficult to measure) were analyzed by mean values and correlation coefficients between each item. This new pattern attempted to set the ease for clothing from experiments of the changes of body surface in motion. On the basis of the above results, a new bodice basic pattern was developed and tested with wearing three times. Through the experiments in measuring the changes of the body surface in motion, it was concluded that it desirable to set a standard of 12cm clothing ease on the bust circumference and 4cm on the waist circumference. The correlation coefficient of the tack width to across back was relatively high (r= .677), therefore, the latter measuring items were eliminated. A grading method was adopted to determine the width and depth of neckline and shoulder slope.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor vegetation recovery process after timber harvesting at (Mt.) Baekwoonsan Seoul National University Forests, Korea. Two monitoring plots were established in 1994 and woody plant were monitored in 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003. Vegetation development pattern during last ten years (1994-2003) after timber harvesting were as follows; Styrax obassia, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of the existing tree were competitive species in the first year after clear-cut, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of sprout tree and Aralia elata as of seedling were dominant species in the sixth year after clear-cut, and Lindera erythrocarpa, Styrax japonica and Quercus serrata were dominant species from the eighth year to the tenth year after clear-cut. Species diversity index of harvested forest interior was decreased at the southwestern slope while it was increased in the northeastern slope till 6th year and decreased after the 8th year). According to DBH distribution pattern, No. of individuals of Quercus serrata, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa showed high frequency in the southwestern slope, and Acer pseudosieboldianum, Styrax obassia, Magnolia sieboldii, Lindera erythrocarpa, and Aralia elata showed good growth in the northeastern slope. There was a difference between slopes in Basal area. It was decreased at the southwestern slopes during the 10th year continuously and it was increased the sixth year however, was decreased after the eighth year at the northeastern slope.

  • The main purpose of this study is to suggest a methodology for identifying vulnerable region in Choyang creek basin susceptible to soil losses based on runoff aggregation structure and energy expenditure pattern of natural river basin within the framework of power law distribution. To this end geomorphologic factors of every point in the basin of interest are extracted by using GIS, which define tractive force and stream power as well as drainage area, and then their complementary cumulative distributions are graphically analyzed through fitting them to power law distribution to identify the sensitive points within the basin susceptible to soil losses with respect to scaling regimes of tractive force and stream power. It is observed that the range of vulnerable region by scaling regime of tractive force is much narrower than by scaling regime of stream power. This result seems to be due to the tractive force is a kind of scale dependent factor which does not follow power law distribution and does not adequately reflect energy expenditure pattern of river basins. Therefore, stream power is preferred to be a more reasonable factor for the evaluation of soil losses. The methodology proposed in this study can be validated by visualizing the path of soil losses, which is generated from hill-slope process characterized by local slope, to the valley through fluvial process characterized by drainage area as well as local slope.

  • Among several movements that occurred upon a slope, golf swing is the most typical one because environmental conditions dynamically vary with many kinds of slopes. Some studies on the golf swing were performed about a weight transfer on flatland, however, there couldn't be seen any study about the weight transfer on slope elsewhere. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide quantified data to objectively test the coaching words and keys about the weight transfer at sidehill slope during goal impact EspeciaIly sidehill Slopes with ball above the feet. Four highschool golfer, who have average handy 5, were recruited for this study. Plantar pressure distribution and cinematographic data were collected during golf swing in the conditions of flatland, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$sidehill slope simultaneously. The two data were used to synchronize the two data later. The plantar regions under the foot were divided into 8 regions according to the directly applied pressure pattern of the subject to insole sensor. The 8 foot regions were hullux, medial forefoot, central forefoot, lateral forefoot, medial midfoot, lateral midfoot, medial heel, and lateral heel. And the plantar pressure data was also divided into four movement address, phases-backswing. downswing, and follow-through phases according to the percentage shown to the visual information of film data. Based on the investigations on public golf books and experiences of golfers, it was hypothesized by the authors in the early of this study that the steeper slopes are, the more weight loads on left foot that positions at the higher place. When observing the results of plantar pressure and vertical force curves according to the sidehill slope conditions, the hypothesis could be accepted.

  • The behavior of the unsaturated soil slope can be influenced by the various factors such as the hydraulic characteristics, the mechanical characteristics, the coefficient of conductivity, the stratifications, the rainfall conditions i.e. the rainfall intensity, the rainfall pattern, the duration time of the rainfall and the antecedent rainfall etc. It is known that the slope failure is influenced greatly by the antecedent rainfall rather than the rainfall condition at the failure time, so the antecedent rainfall is supposed to be a very important factor in slope stability analysis among these factors. To predict and to prevent the slope failure by the rainfall, the distribution of the matric suction by the antecedent rainfall must be considered first of all and the slope stability analysis should be carried out by considering the successive rainfall characteristics. In this research, 3 samples with different quantity (5%, 10%, 20%) of silts were prepared and the SWCC (Soil-water characteristic curve) tests were carried out and the associated parameters were analyzed. After analyzing the distribution of the matric suction and the change of the mechanical characteristics such as the stress and the strength when applying the antecedent rainfall for one month and the successive intensive rainfall for 12 hours, the slope stability analyses were carried out numerically. And the influence of the antecedent rainfall for one month and the SWCC on the stability of a slope were compared and analyzed.

  • The number of tunnels are in fact increasing as a part of linear improvement project of general national highway and road enlargement and pavement project. Recently, collapses of portal slope are also occurring considerably, due to local raining from severe rain storm and abnormal weather. Accordingly, it was risen a necessity to efficiently respond to tunnel portal slope damage and maintenance in Korea and oversea nations. This paper is a basic proposal to execute a survey on the current status and state of the tunnel portal slopes that were already installed and are now being operated along general national highways, and also to execute state evaluation for the purpose of managing those effectively. As a research method, domestic tunnels were analyzed in accordance with geometrical shape such as access type, portal form, and tunnel type, etc. via field survey to analyze the types of tunnel portal slopes along national highways. State evaluation classification sheet is presented to divide classes for the danger state of the surveyed portal slopes, and then the related grades are divided. It is mainly aimed at classifying the tunnel portal slope along national highways with using this state evaluation, to use it as basic data so that continuous maintenance can be executed in the future in accordance with danger classes.

  • It is very important to design and construct slopes safely because damage cases are increasing due to slope failure. Recently, Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) based programs are commonly used for slope designs. Though LEM can give factors of safety through simple calculation, it has a disadvantage that the sliding surface should be assumed in advance. On the other hand, the use of Finite Difference Method (FDM) is increasing since the factor of safety can be easily estimated by using shear strength reduction technique. Therefore the purpose of this study is to present a reasonable slope design methodology by comparing the two commonly used analysis approaches; LEM and FDM. To this end, the reinforcement effects of the two methods were compared in terms of the support pattern of soil nailing reinforced in the section where plane failure is anticipated. As a result, the reinforcement effects by nail angle and nail spacing turned out to be equal. Also it was found that the factor of safety increased in LEM, but not changed in FDM when the nail length increased.
