Slope draperies in soil and rock are a well known method to avoid rockfalls into the roads or onto housings. Common wire mesh or a combination of wire mesh and wire rope nets are pinned to the slope by the means of fully grouted nails or anchors. Most of these installations have not been designed to stabilize the slope, but simply avoid the rocks from bouncing. The combination of soil- or rocknailing with a designable flexible facing system offers the advantage of a longterm stabilization of slopes and can replace other standard methods for slope stabilization. The capability to transfer axial and shear loads from the flexible facing system to the anchor points is most decisive for the design of the stabilization system. But the transfer of forces by mesh as pure surface protection devices is limited on account of their tensile strength and above all also by the possible force transmission to the anchoring points. Strong wire rope nets increase the performance for slope stabilizations with greater distances between nails and anchors and are widely used in Europe. However, they are comparatively expensive in relation to the protected surface. Today, special processes enable the production of diagonally structured mesh from high-tensile steel wire. These mesh provide tensile strengths comparable to wire rope nets. The interaction of mesh and fastening to nail / anchor has been investigated in comprehensive laboratory tests. This also in an effort to find a suitable fastening plates which allows an optimal utilization of the strength of the mesh in tangential (slope-parallel) as well as in vertical direction (perpendicular to the slope). The trials also confirmed that these new mesh, in combination with suitable plates, enable substantial pretensioning of the system. Such pretensioning increases the efficiency of the protection system. This restricts deformations in the surface section of critical slopes which might otherwise cause slides and movements as a result of dilatation. Suitable dimensioning models permit to correctly dimension such systems. The new mesh with the adapted fastening elements have already been installed in first pilot projects in Switzerland and Germany and provide useful information on handling and effects.
In this study, a slope stability chart for assessing stability of homogeneous simple soil slopes is proposed. Most existing slope stability charts are based on limit equilibrium method, which is not rigorous in mechanical standpoint. Meanwhile, limit analysis based on the principle of virtual work and the bound theorems of plasticity is suitable for evaluating the stability of geotechnical structures such as slope due to its simplicity in computation and mechanical rigor. Numerical limit analysis taking advantage of finite elements and linear programming can consider various slope conditions and, in addition, find the optimum stability solution with effeciency. In this study, a numerical limit analysis program in terms of effective stress is developed and a mechanically rigorous slope stability chart is proposed by performing stability analyses for various slope conditions. Pore pressure ratio, commonly used in stability charts, is applied to consider the effects of pore pressure for effective stress analysis. As a result of comparison between proposed stability chart and Spencer's stability chart, it was found that Spencer's chart solutions are biased to lower bound which means conservative in design.
Probability distribution of the sea surface slope is estimated using sun glitter images derived from visible radiometer on Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) and surface vector winds observed by spaceborne scatterometers. The brightness of the visible images is converted to the probability of wave surfaces which reflect the sunlight toward GMS in grids of 0.25 deg $\times$ 0.25 deg. Slope and azimuth angle required for the reflection of the sun's ray toward GMS are calculated for each grid from the geometry of GMS observation and location of the sun. The GMS images are then collocated with surface wind data observed by three scatterometers. Using the collocated data set of about 30 million points obtained in a period of 4 years from 1995 to 1999, probability distribution function of the surface slope is estimated as a function of wind speed and azimuth angle relative to the wind direction. Results are compared with those of Cox and Munk (1954a, b). Surface slope estimated by the present method shows narrower distribution and much less directivity relative to the wind direction than that reported by Cox and Munk. It is expected that their data were obtained under conditions of growing wind waves. In general, wind waves are not always developing, and slope distribution might differ from the results of Cox and Munk. Most of our data are obtained in the subtropical seas under clear-sky conditions. This difference of the conditions may be the reason for the difference of slope distribution.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between impact and shear peak force, and tibia-accelerometer variables during running. Method: Twenty-five male heel strike runners (mean age: 23.5±3.6 yrs, mean height: 176.3±3.3 m/s, mean mass: 71.8±9.7 kg) were recruited in this study. The peak impact and anteroposterior shear forces during treadmill running (Bertec, USA) were collected, and impact shock variables were computed by using a triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA). One-way ANOVA was used to test the influence of the running speed on the parameters. Pearson's partial correlation was used to investigate the relationship between the peak impact and shear force, and accelerometer variables. Results: The running speed affected the peak impact and posterior shear force, time, slope, and peak vertical and resultant tibial acceleration, slope at heel contact. Significant correlations were noticed between the peak impact force and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration, and between peak impact average slope and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration average slope, and between posterior peak (FyP) and peak vertical tibia acceleration, and between posterior peak instantaneous slop and peak vertical tibial acceleration during running at 3 m/s. However, it was observed that correlations between peak impact average slope and peak vertical tibia acceleration average slope, between posterior peak time and peak vertical and resultant tibia acceleration time, between posterior peak instantaneous slope and peak vertical tibial acceleration instantaneous slope during running at 4 m/s. Conclusion: Careful analysis is required when investigating the linear relationship between the impact and shear force, and tibia accelerometer components during relatively fast running speed.
This study describes image-based approach for efficient and objective evaluation method of the rock slope stability. Three-dimensional rock slope model was reconstructed by processing stereo digital images. The model provided fundamental information for geospatial analysis of the rock slope. Methods to extract three-dimensional information about discontinuity on the rock slope and to estimate roughness of the rock surfaces were suggested. The results show that stereo digital images have potential to provide information for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of rock slope. In addition, visualization of the results increases efficiency and benefit in evaluating rock slope stability.
The target of this study is large scale rock slope collapsed by around 7 pm on August, 2012, which is located at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ limestone quarries of Gangneung city, Gangwondo. The slope prior to the collapse is formed as the height of about 200 m and the average inclination of $45^{\circ}$. The estimated amount of the collapse is about $1,500,000m^3$ with respect to the slope after the collapse. Geotechnical and field investigations such as boring, geophysical prospecting, surface geological survey, geological lineaments, borehole imaging, metric 3D imaging, experimental and field test, mining work by year, and daily rainfall were performed to find the cause of rock slope failure. Various analyzes using slope mass rating, stereonet projection, limit equilibrium method, continuum and non-continuum model were conducted to check of the stability of the slope. It is expected that the cause of slope failure from the results of various analysis and survey is due to the combined factors such as topography, rainfall, rock type and quality, discontinuities, geo-structural characteristics as the limestone cavity and fault zones, but the failure of slope in case of the analysis without the limestone cavity is not occurred. Safe factor of 0.66 was obtained from continuum analysis of the slope considering the limestone cavity, so the ultimate causes of slope failure is considered to be due to the influence of limestone cavity developed along fault zone.

In this study, the stability of trench slope was analysed in summer and winter seasons for the construction of pipelines in permafrost regions. The construction standards of Korea, Russia and UK were compared for obtaining an optimum trench shape for a pipeline of 30 in. diameter. Using the geotechnical properties of soil in Yakutsk (Russia), the stability of trench slope was analysed using Strength Reduction Method (SRM) according to the horizontal slope angle values of $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ and vertical slope angle values of $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. In both seasons, an increase in the slope angle results in a decrease in the factor of safety. The results show that horizontal slope angle of $30^{\circ}$ was not safe in summer season. At the vertical slope angle of $20^{\circ}$, trench side failure was observed, whereas, ground slope failure was observed at the vertical slope angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. Due to the solidification of pore water at temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$, cementation of soil particles take place. Therefore, the trench slope was found to be stable in the winter season at all vertical and horizontal slop angles, except for special load cases and abrupt temperature changes.

In this paper, an approximate calculation method on the transverse strength of oil tankers by use of slop-deflection method os described which considers the effect of shear deflection and varing section in elements and the result of calculation in models and actual ships, is presented. The object of this paper is focused on the development of program which can be used widely regardless strut numbers in transverse frame rings. To examine the reliability of the above method, the results in this paper are compared with the results which are obtained by use of SAP4(Structure Analysis Program) based on finite element method. The application of the Slope-Deflection Method on the transverse strength of oil tankers has the advantage that this method takes less than the other methods in calculation.
Natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis occur suddenly, so that they cause massive loss of lives and property. Especially earthquakes represent a particularly severe threat because of the extensive damage accompanied by them. In Korea, an earthquake-resistant design has been rarely applied to a design or construction of slope. However, in resent years, the researches for earthquake-resistance have been performed because the importance on the earthquake-resistance is perceived and highlighted. Soil nail method, one of the slope stability methods, is excellent for its constructability and cost effectiveness, as compared with other stability methods. Also, this method has been widely used for reinforced construction for slope stability. The studies of soil nail method have been performed on the interaction behavior between nails and slopes as well as the varied load condition such as static load, dynamic load and so on. Nevertheless, there has been minimal research regarding the constraint condition of nail head. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed for identifying effect on slope stability for the constrain condition of the soil nail. The result shows that the resistance of constrained the nail head on reinforced slope is larger compared to the one of unconstrained nail head.
This paper has been prepared to compare the safety factor of Fellenius method and Bishop method which are most frequantly utilized for stability analysis of dam and natural slope. The results are as follows. 1. Safety factor obtained by Bishop method shows 11-29% higher in steady seepage state and 46-57% higher in no seepage flow than the one by Fellenius. 2. The ratio of safety factor between no seepage flow and seepage flow ($F_1-F_2/F_2$) increases as the slope becomes flatter. 3. The ratio of safety factor between Bishop method and Fellenius ($F_B-F_F/F_F$) decreases as the slope becomes flatter.
