  • GIS is used much research for efficient forest fire management and forecasting and slope has been known as high-leverage thing in spread of forest fire specially. Various algorithms are used usually to calculate slope angle of topography from DEM(Digital elevation model). However, because spread speed of forest fire is different according to uphill slope and downhill slope, it need new slope calculation algorithm. Therefore, developed slope calculation algorithm can reflect uphill slope and forest fire spread speed of looking downhill slope.

  • Forest fire is expanded to large-scale forest fire based on topographic characteristics, particularly slope. This report addresses the currently available methods of calculation slope angle from a digital elevation model and develops a new method that circumvents a number of the shortcomings associated with other algorithms. The results of the comparison of five different slope angle calculation algorithms show that maximum uphill slope angle calculation is the proper method for the purpose of predicting forest fire hazard.

  • The slope stability analysis is usually done using the methods of calculation to rupture. The problem lies in determining the critical failure surface and the corresponding factor of safety (FOS). To evaluate the slope stability by a method of limit equilibrium, there are linear and nonlinear methods. The linear methods are direct methods of calculation of FOS but nonlinear methods require an iterative process. The nonlinear simplified Bishop method's is popular because it can quickly calculate FOS for different slopes. This paper concerns the use of inverse analysis by genetic algorithm (GA) to find out the factor of safety for the slopes using the Bishop simplified method. The analysis is formulated to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation and find the critical failure surface and the corresponding safety factor. The results obtained by this approach compared with those available in literature illustrate the effectiveness of this inverse method.

  • The TOPMODEL Topographic Index (TI) is widely used to predict the spatial distribution of soil moisture contents, The TI is one of terrain indices which are frequently used in spatially distributed environmental modelings. There have been studies on the evaluation and improvement of the TI. Most of them. however, have focused on only the modified multiple flow direction algorithm and algorithms for slope calculation have been paid little attention, In this research, we attempted to improve the TI by utilizing the infinitive flow direction (Dinf) algorithm and Horn slope algorithm. Then we attempt to analyze and evaluate the influence of the improved TI on hydrological responses of the TOPMODEL As a result. our approaching using the infinitive flow direction (Dinf) and Horn slope algorithm made the TI better than the multiple flow direction (MD8) - the multiple descent slope (MDS) algorithm. However, the model efficiency of discharges at the outlet was not increased. Our research may provide an insight to choose appropriate algorithms for calculating flow direction and slope in spatially distributed environmental modelings.

  • In this paper, a calculation-efficient method for weight update in the algorithm based on maximization of the zero-error probability (MZEP) is proposed. This method is to utilize the current slope value in calculation of the next slope value, replacing the block processing that requires a summation operation in a sample time period. The simulation results shows that the proposed method yields the same performance as the original MZEP algorithm while significantly reducing the computational time and complexity with no need for a buffer for error samples. Also the proposed algorithm produces faster convergence speed than the algorithm that is based on the error-entropy minimization.

  • Solar power generation systems require maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to operate PV panels at their maximum power point (MPP). Most conventional MPPT algorithms are based on the slope-tracking concept. A typical slope-tracking method is the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm. The P&O algorithm measures the current and voltage of a PV panel to find the operating point of the voltage at which the calculated power is maximized. However, the measurement error of the sensor causes irregularity in the calculation of the generated power and voltage control. This irregularity leads to the problem of not finding the correct MPP operating point. In this work, the power output of a PV panel based on the P&O algorithm is simulated by considering the insolation profiles from typical clear and cloudy weather conditions and the errors of current and voltage sensors. Simulation analysis suggests the optimal control period and perturbation voltage of MPPT to maximize its target efficiency under real weather conditions with sensor tolerance.

  • Conentionally, LS factor for the USLE suggested by Wischmeier has been computed manually on topographic maps based on one dimensional approach. But outcomes of the equation could be severely affected by the convergence and divergence of surface runoff at complex terrains. Thus the objective of this research are to develop a method to automatically compute LS factor based on the multiple flow algorithm, and to test the accuracy of this method by comparing outcomes of this method to previous measurements or estimations of soil erosion. The program for the automatic calculation of LS factor was developed by utilizing Fox Pro 4.5, and outcomes of the program is designed to input to IDRISI. The accuracy test of LS factor was carried out by comparing the actual measurements of soil loss at two test sites in and around of Suwon. The calculated volume of soil erosion at Buju mountain, Mokpo, was also compared to the outcome of a previous research based on the LS factor calculated by the conventional onedimensional approach. The outcomes of this research are as follows. First, the computed L based on the multiple flow algorithm for concae slopes are greater than those of convex slopes,. Second, the estimated soil loss based on this method at the test site in Mokpo is much greater than the outcomes based on the conventional one-dimensional approach. It can e concluded that the application of this automatic calculation method of LS factor can improve the accuracy of USLE and facilitate soil erosion prevention methods.

  • The prototype radiometric calibration algorithm of the imagers for IR channels has been developed according to the Weinreb's method. Applying the algorithm to the GOES-12 count data, we have shown that the calibration coefficients (slope and intercept) evaluated by the algorithm gives good agreement with the NESDIS's ones, and that the scanning error due to the scan mirror emissivity and stripe error are almost eliminated by the East/West angle dependent scan-mirror correction and the respective calculation of intercept for each North/South scan line, respectively.

  • In this paper, we present the development of an antenna specialized for the maritime collision avoidance system. This antenna is configured as the dielectric rod partially embedded in the metal cavity to reduce the overall size, simultaneously assuring the mechanical sturdiness against the challenging oceanic weather conditions. More importantly, the design has been carefully done to meet the requirements on the radiation pattern(with the slope < 5 dB/deg in the elevation(E-plane), circular in the azimuth) suitable to receiving the reflected signals from the other objects on the sea. To find the optimal design parameters, the genetic algorithm has been used to meet the goals of the desired return loss and pattern. This design methodology is validated by the good agreement between the calculation and measurement.

  • The impact of land slope to the degree of flow divergence was considered employing distributional applications of slope exponents in the now directlOn algoriUnns. Lmear, exponential and ]X)wer law of distributional functIons were employed to address the variation of slope exponents m a terrain analysis. Dongok subwatershed at Wichun test watershed was selected as a study area. Digital Elevation Models of 20m, 30m, 40m and 50m grid size were made to perfonn the analysis. Various calcualtion methodologies of topographic index and the impact of grid sizes were investigated in terms of statistical and spatial aspects. DIstributional applications of slope e.xponents made it possible to represent the flow divergence and convergence about the ten-ain characteristics. The Monte~Carlo method was used to simulate six runoff events to check the impact of topographic factor in the runoff simulation.
