Adherence between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete is usually ignored in finite element analysis (FEA) of reinforced concrete (RC) members. However, load transition between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete effects RC members' behavior a great deal. In this study, the effects of bond-slip on the FEA of RC members are examined. In the analyses, three types of bond-slip modeling methods (perfect bond, contact elements and spring elements) and three types of reinforcement modeling methods (smeared, one dimensional line and three dimensional solid elements) were used. Bond-slip behavior between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete was simulated with cohesive zone materials (CZM) for the first time. The bond-slip relationship was identified experimentally using a beam bending test as suggested by RILEM. The results obtained from FEA were compared with the results of four RC beams that were tested experimentally. Results showed that, in FE analyses, because of the perfect bond occurrence between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete, unrealistic strains occurred in the longitudinal reinforcement. This situation greatly affected the load deflection relationship because the longitudinal reinforcements dominated the failure mode. In addition to the spring elements, the combination of a bonded contact option with CZM also gave closer results to the experimental models. However, modeling of the bond-slip relationship with a contact element was quite difficult and time consuming. Therefore bond-slip modeling is more suitable with spring elements.

There are many curves in Seoul subway system. Therefore, the noise from subway system in curved line gives displeasure to passenger. The subway noise in curved line is affected not only by rail condition but also wheel condition and dynamic characteristics. The railway curving noise can be divided into 2 categories. The first is the noise due to stick-slip between wheel tread and rail head, and the second is one by wheel flange contact on rail side. Because of these phenomena - stick-slip and wheel flange contact - wheels are worn seriously. In this study the curving noise was reviewed by using eigen-mode of wheel and waterfall plot which shows noise level in time-frequency domain. And also those were reviewed in viewpoint of stick-slip noise and wheel flange contact noise. Finally, the relationship between curving noise and wheel wear was studied.

Among the variable-speed AC motor drive systems, the static slip power recovery system has been widely adopted in large power drives because a high efficiency drive can be obtained by recovering the slip power to the AC line. Although many improvements have been made in this system, several problems also remain such as the need of transformer in inverter AC side, which results in limiting speed control range and increasing the losses, production of reactive power by the control of inverter firing angle, harmonics in line currents, and so on. This paper presents the novel high performance slip power recovery system using the boost converter and small size filter in the rotor circuit, which recovers slip power of a wound rotor induction machine to AC supply efficiently with the aid of the boost converter, in which most of the problems in conventional system can be solved. The speed can be controlled by the duty ratio of the converter switch, not by inverter firing angle. As a results, the proposed system can operate in high power factor and the harmonic currents caused by the inverter and rectifier can be considerably suppressed. The validity of the proposed system verified by demonstrating the good agreement in the simulation and experimental results.
Forward slip is an important parameter often used in rolling-speed control models for tandem hot strip rolling mills. In a hot strip mill, on-line measurement of strip speed is inherently very difficult. Therefore, for the set-up of the finishing mill, a forward slip model is used to calculate the strip speed from roll circumferential velocity at each mill stand. Due to its complexity, most previous researches have used semi-empirical methods in determining values for the forward slip. Although these investigations may be useful in process design and control, they do not have a theoretical basis. In the present study, a better forward slip model has been developed, which provides for a better set-up and more precise control of the mill. Factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, width spread, shape of deformation zone in the roll bite are incorporated into the model. Implementation of the new forward slip model for the control of a 7-stand hot strip tandem rolling mill shows significant improvement in roll speed set-up accuracy.

Nowadays, most passenger cars equipped with automatic transmissions use torque converter clutches to reduce fuel consumption, and recently the slip control scheme of torque converter clutches is widely studied for the expansion of the operating region of torque converter clutches and thus for the further improvement of the fuel economy of vehicles. In this study, the analysis of the torque converter clutch system including the line pressure control unit of the automatic transmission and the actuating hydraulic control unit of the torque converter clutch is performed, and a feedforward controller and a fuzzy logic controller for its slip control are proposed. Also, for the slip controller to use the grade resistance information during control, an observer-based grade resistance estimator is designed. The performance of the designed grade resistance estimator and the slip controller is verified by dynamic simulations, and the effect of the torque converter clutch slip control on the fuel economy is examined using a driving cycle simulation.
The generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) criterion, which is recognized as one of the standard failure conditions for rock mass, is specialized for rock engineering applications and covers a wide range of rock mass conditions. Accordingly, many research efforts have been devoted to the incorporation of this criterion into the stability analysis of rock structures. In this study, the slip-line analysis method, which is a kind of elastoplastic analysis method, is combined with the GHB failure criterion to derive analytical equations that can easily calculate the plastic radius and stress distribution in the vicinity of the circular tunnel. In the process of derivation of related formulas, it is assumed that the behavior of rock mass after failure is perfectly plastic and the in-situ stress condition is hydrostatic. In the formulation, it is revealed that the plastic radius can be calculated analytically using the two respective tangential friction angles corresponding to the stress conditions at tunnel wall and elastic-plastic boundary. It is also shown that the plastic radius and stress distribution calculated using the derived analytical equations coincide with the results of Lee & Pietruszczak's numerical method published in 2008. In the latter part of this paper, the influence of the quality of the rock mass on the size of the plastic zone, the stress distribution, and the change of the tangential friction angle was investigated using the derived analytical equations.
The design of the mooring line to maintain the position of an offshore structure in rough marine environments is recognized as a very important consideration. Conventional fatigue evaluation of a mooring line was performed by considering the tensile force acting on the mooring line, but the mooring line broke after 238 days in the girassol area even though the expected fatigue life was expected to be longer. The causes of this event are known to be due to OPB/IPB (out-of-plane bending/in-plane bending) caused by chain link friction due to the excessive tensile strength of the mooring line. In this study, three models with different boundary conditions were proposed for fatigue analysis of a mooring line considering OPB/IPB. Interlink stiffness was calculated by nonlinear structure analysis and a stress concentration factor was derived. In addition, the sensitivity of interlink stiffness according to the magnitude of tensile force, large deformation effect, and coefficient of friction was analyzed, and the effect of critical elastic slip and bending moment calculation position on interlink stiffness was confirmed.

A slip factor is defined as an empirical factor, which should be multiplied to theoretical energy transfer to estimate real work input of a centrifugal compressor. During the last century, researchers have tried to develop simple empirical models to predict the slip factor. However most of these models have been developed based only on design point data. Furthermore flow is assumed inviscid. As a result, these models often fail to predict the correct slip factor at off-design condition. In this study, various models for the slip factor were analysed and compared with experimental and numerical data at off-design conditions. As a result of this study, Wiesner's and Paeng and Chung's models are shown to be applicable for radial impeller, but all the models are found to be inappropriate for backswept impellers.
Many mechanical defects originated from various geological causes make rock mass exhibit anisotropic characteristics. Understanding how the stress distribution occurs in anisotropic rock mass is, therefore, very important for the design of footings on rock and rock structures. In this study, the patterns of elastic stress distribution, developed by acting line load on the surface, in transversely isotropic was investigated. The influence of joint stiffness, joint spacing, and dip angle on the stress distribution was examined. By assuming the Mohr-Coulomb criterion as joint slip condition, the development of joint slip zone was also discussed.

Recently, the Seoul Metro has replaced the old series of Line No.2 and 3 to the new ones. In spite of the replacement, the new ones are more likely to be slippery compared to the old ones. Because the subway system has such short intervals, delayed subways influence the whole line systems, especially during the rush hours. And the slip causes the delay. Therefore we are willing to find out the reason why the new ones are more defective and we will try to mince it from the view of mechanical aspects and handling aspects of driving.
