  • A precise tracking control scheme on the system in presence of nonlinear dynamic friction is proposed. In this control scheme, the standard SMC is combined with the nonlinear observer to estimate the dynamic friction state that is impossible to measure. Then this control scheme has the good tracking performance and the robustness to parameter variation compared with the standard SMC and the PiD based nonlinear observer control system. This fact is proved by the experiment on the ball-screw driven servo system with the dynamic friction model.

  • This paper proposes a sum of squares (SOS) method for anti-swing control of overhead crane system using HOSM (High-Order Sliding-Mode) observer. By representing the dynamic equations of overhead crane as the polynomial dynamic equations via Taylor series expansion, the control input is obtained from the converted polynomial dynamic equations by numerical tool SOSTOOL. Since the actual crane systems include disturbance such as wind and friction, we propose a method to compensate for the disturbance by estimating the disturbance using HOSM observer. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness and the applicability of the proposed method.

  • There are many control methods guaranteeing the robustness of systems. Among them, H$\infty$ control, sliding mode control and disturbance observer have been used widely. Especially, disturbance observer(DOB) is one of the most popular methods because it is easy to apply and the cost to pay is low due to its simplicity. Conventional DOB utilizes output signal as a feedback signal. But in Optical Disk Drive(ODD) systems, the Position Error Signal(PES) is the only available one. So conventional DOB is not applicable. If we use error signal in stead of output signal, another form of DOB is made. We call it as Error based Disturbance Observer(EDOB). We show in this paper the difference between two systems, namely conventional DOB system and the EDOB system, and also show the effectiveness of EDOB through experiment.

  • This paper presents a disturbance observer-based robust backstepping load-following control (DO-RBLFC) scheme for modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (MHTGRs) in the presence of actuator saturation and disturbances. Based on reactor kinetics and temperature reactivity feedback, the mathematical model of the MHTGR is first established. After that, a DO is constructed to estimate the unknown compound disturbances including model uncertainties, external disturbances, and unmeasured states. Besides, the actuator saturation is compensated by employing an auxiliary function in this paper. With the help of the DO, a robust load-following controller is developed via the backstepping technique to improve the load-following performance of the MHTGR subject to disturbances. At last, simulation and comparison results verify that the proposed DO-RBLFC scheme offers higher load-following accuracy, better disturbances rejection capability, and lower control rod speed than a PID controller, a conventional backstepping controller, and a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode controller.

  • This article explores the speed regulation problem of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) systems subjected to unknown time-varying disturbances. A continuous sliding mode control (CSMC) technique is introduced for the speed loop to enhance the robustness of PMSM systems and eliminate the chattering phenomenon caused by high-frequency switch function in the conventional control law. However, the high control gain of the CSMC law in the presence of strong disturbances leads to large steady-state speed fluctuations for PMSM systems. In many application fields, PMSM systems are affected by time-varying disturbances instead of constant disturbances. For example, electric bicycles are usually affected by changing environmental disturbances, including wind speeds, road conditions, etc. These disturbances may be in the form of constant, ramp, and parabolic disturbances. Hence, a generalized proportional integral (GPI) observer is employed to estimate these types of disturbances. Then, the disturbance estimation method and the aforementioned CSMC method are combined to establish a composite sliding mode control method called the CSMC+GPI method for the speed loop of PMSM systems. Contrary to the conventional sliding mode control technique, the proposed method completely eliminates the chattering phenomenon caused by the switching function in the conventional control law. Moreover, a small control gain for the CSMC+GPI method is chosen by feed-forwarding estimated values to the speed controller. Hence, the steady-state speed fluctuations are small. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation and experimental result.

  • In this paper, a method for controlling a single phase PWM AC/DC converter without any voltage sensors is proposed. In this method, the source voltage is estimated by sliding mode observer and input current is synchronized with the estimated source voltage. The source voltage is estimated by current error between the actul and the estimated current. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed control method.

  • This paper presents an approach for designing a linear multivariable servo mechanism for the case of constant and time varying disturbances. In this paper, we use an "observer-based" approach to consider the disturbance vector as states of the system and the resulting servomechanism design involves the design of an asymptotic observer which estimates both the actual plant states and the disturbance states. The design makes use of switching dynamics instead of switching logics to obtain the sliding mode and from the switching dynamics we can remove the undesirable chattering phenomena.phenomena.

  • In this paper, a robust path tracker and depth controller of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle based on sliding mode control is presented. We have also designed augmented equivalent control inputs by analyzing the sliding mode with the reaching mode. This can enhance the reaching rate, and improve chattering problems, that is, noise caused by the control plane actuator of the vehicle, which is one of the problems that occur when sliding mode control is used. Also to resolve the steady state error generated in the path tracker under current effect, a modified sliding plane is constructed. Also a redesigned sliding plane and control input using transformation matrix is proposed to do easy design of MIMO depth controller. For state variables that cannot be measured directly, reduced order sliding mode control is used to design an observer. The performance of designed path tracker and depth controller is investigated by computer simulation. The results show that the proposed control system has robust performance to parameter variation, modelling error and disturbance.

  • This paper presents motion control of the precision stage composed of the piezoelectric actuator and flexible hinges. The stage shows approximately 27% overshoot when the stage was applied to 30V square wave input voltage. Also, the stage shows nonlinear response characteristics including hysteresis. This paper proposes feedback control technique to suppress the phenomenon of hysteresis and overshoot using the sliding mode control scheme with the integrator. Also, this paper suggests the method that searches important parameters of sliding mode control and observer using Genetic Algorithm. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm, experimental validations are performed.

  • A sliding mode control method using the parameterization of both the hyperplane and the compensator for output feedback and reduced observer is presented for rotational inverted pendulums. This control strategy overcomes the problem of unattainable velocity state which is resulted from severe noise of analogue sense and constructs numerical algorithms designs of dynamic output feedback sliding mode hyperplane and controller. The result of the experiment shows the superior performance compared with the LQ controller and the robustness with respect to both tapping disturbances and certain initial conditions.
