Effect of Carbon Materials on the Slag Foaming in EAF Process (전기로 슬래그 포밍에 미치는 가탄재 종류의 영향)

  • During steelmaking in EAF, recycled scraps is used as a main material, melted by arc, and electricity use as a main energy. Slag foaming is an important technology for reducing electrical energy. CO gas generated by the reaction between injection carbon and (FeO), [C] and injection {$O_2$}. CO gas generated by this reaction is collected in slag, resulted in slag foaming. In general, the carbon materials used in the EAF process is anthracite and coke. This study investigated the effects of the carbon materials used on slag foaming in the steelmaking process. As a result of this study, the slag foaming height is increased by cokes rather than anthracite, and with an increase in the amount of particles samller than $500{\mu}m$. Based on these results, the application to the operation resulted in increase of slag forming height, reduction of injection carbon, and reduction of electrical energy.

  • Foaming of slag is a thermodynamically unstable phenomenon and has significant effects in iron and steelmaking processes. For better recycling method of pulp sludge, the application as an defoaming agent during steelmaking process was adopted and tested. The forming machine has been modified in order to produce the briquettes, which are made of pulp sludge and slag with different weight ratio. Influencing factors on the foaming phenomena have been studied and tested for better understanding of foaming phenomena. Experiments were carried out with $CaO-FeO-SiO_2$ based slags with Ar gas injection and addition of coke particles. The slag basicity and (%FeO) contents adapted as major factors to treasure foaming tendency of the slag system. It was found that foam index (${\Sigma}$) gradually decreased as both the basicity and the (FeO) content increase. Four kinds of antifoaming agent such as aluminium dross, cokes, rice bran and pulp sludge with steelmaking slag have been tested in actual process. Aluminium dross was the most effective, and pulp sludge with steelmaking slag also showed the desired results.

  • Foam formation of Slag-Quartz-$\textrm{Na}_2\textrm{CO}_3$ system was investigated. The foaming agent used was sulphide and sulphate compounds which are present in the slag. The microstructures and x-ray analysis of foam slag, the effect of composition and particle size of slag on the formation temperature, and foam size and distribution of slag foam were studied. The Increment of $\textrm{Na}_2\textrm{O}$ in the slag batch composition decrease the initial foam formation temperature and enhance the foam growth. The formation of temperature and soaking time had pronounced effect on the foam growth and increasing the glass phase in the slag foam.

Physical Properties of Cement System Insulation Using Blast Furnace Slag

  • In this study, fabrication method of inorganic insulation were studied to reduce $CO_2$ from buildings. Main materials for inorganic insulation were used cement, blast furnace slag and aluminum powder as foaming agent. Mixing ratio of cement and slag was controlled and physical properties of inorganic insulation were analyzed. When inorganic insulation was fabricated using cement and slag, expanded slurries were not sunken and hardened normally. Pore size was 0.5 - 2 mm; mean pore size was about 1mm in inorganic insulation. Compressive strength of inorganic insulation increased with curing time and increased slightly with cement fineness. However, specific gravity decreased slightly with curing time; this phenomenon was caused by evaporation of adsorptive water. When inorganic insulation was dried at $60^{\circ}C$, compressive strength was higher than that of undried insulation. The highest compressive strength was found with a mixture of cement (50%) and slag (30%) in inorganic insulation. Compressive strength was 0.32 MPa, thermal conductivity was 0.043 W/mK and specific gravity was $0.12g/cm^3$.

  • Slopping deteriorates the productivity and the stability of operation in BOF refining process, and hence POSCO has developed methods to predict and prevent slopping. Specific equipment was developed to measure the change of the reacting force to the oxygen-blowing lance against oxygen jet and the force was gathered and analyzed with the flow rate of oxygen and the height of lance. From this study, it was found that the reacting force is strongly correlated to the slag foam height. Currently, the modeling of the relation of the slag foaming level and the vertically acted force to lance is being approached for predicting the slopping.

  • In EAF steelmaking industries, MgO content in slag increases due to the addition of dolomite flux to protect refractory lines of furnaces and improve the desulfurization capability of slag. In addition, coal powder is injected in the molten steel bath to increase the energy efficiency of the process. In this regard, the utilization of waste MgO-C refractory material as a flux was examined because it has high amounts of MgO (>70%) and graphite carbon (>10%). A series of experiments were carried out using industrial EAF slag with added light burnt dolomite and waste MgO refractory material from a Korean steel company. The results for the addition of the two fluxes were similar in terms of slag basicity; therefore, it is expected that waste MgO-C refractory material can successfully replace dolomite flux. In addition, when the waste MgO-C refractory material was added as flux, slag foaming phenomenon was demonstrated because of the reaction between the graphite from the refractory material and iron oxides in the slag.

  • EAF processed slag which contains about 20 ~ 35 weight percent FetO is poured to slag pot and cooled. If we recover Fe from molten slag by the reduction, we will improve steel yield rate and reduce slag quantity poured from the furnace. Usually, carbon is used as a reductant and slag foaming agent in the EAF process. In this experiment, after melt the metal in induction furnace and then add slag with carbon and Al dross powder as a reductant, we investigated the reduction of FetO from slag and change of Phophorus content. As the result, when we use Al dross as a reductant, recovery rate is two times more than carbon. Phosphorus pick up is less than 50ppm with reduction of EAF slag.

  • In the steelmaking process using an electric arc furnace (EAF), light-burnt dolomite, which is a flux containing MgO, is used to protect refractory materials and improve desulfurization ability. Furthermore, a recarburizing agent is added to reduce energy consumption via slag foaming and to induce the deoxidation effect. Herein, a waste MgO-C based refractory material was used to achieve the aforementioned effects economically. The waste MgO-C refractory materials contain a significant amount of MgO and graphite components; however, most of these materials are currently discarded instead of being recycled. The mass recycling of waste MgO-C refractory materials would be achievable if their applicability as a flux for steelmaking is proven. Therefore, experiments were performed using a target composition range similar to the commercial EAF slag composition. A pre-melted base slag was prepared by mixing SiO2, Al2O3, and FeO in an alumina crucible and heating at 1450℃ for 1 h or more. Subsequently, a mixed flux #2 (a mixture of light-burnt dolomite, waste MgO-C based refractory material, and limestone) was added to the prepared pre-melted base slag and a melting reaction test was performed. Injecting the pre-melted base slag with the flux facilitates the formation of the target EAF slag. These results were compared with that of mixed flux #1 (a mixture of light-burnt dolomite and limestone), which is a conventional steelmaking flux, and the possibility of replacement was evaluated. To obtain a reliable evaluation, characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry were used, and slag foam height, slag basicity, and Fe recovery were calculated.

  • In this paper, a series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the resistibility of carbonation and freeze-thawing damage of the high-volume blast furnace slag concrete using expancel, the expandable microsphere, and ERCO, emulsified refine cooking oil. The concrete mixture of 0.45 water-to-binder ratio with 60% of blast furnace slag was evaluated for carbonation, freeze-thawing resistibility, SEM, and porosity. According to the previous research, replacing ERCO contributes on improving carbonation resistibility with capillary pore filling effect by soap foaming reaction of ERCO while significantly decreased freeze-thawing resistibility. To improve this decreased freeze-thawing resistibility, expancel was used, and thus freeze-thawing resistibility was improved as the replacement ratio of expancel was increased. It is considered that the selective volume shrunken effect of expancel due to the external pressure and decreased air void spacing factor due to expancel.

Carbon-capture Performance of foam Concrete Using Stainless Steel Slag (스테인리스 스틸 AOD 슬래그를 이용한 폼 콘크리트의 탄소포집 성능)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical and carbon-capture properties of foam concrete containing stainless steel argon oxygen decarbonization(AOD) slag. AOD slag was used as a binder, and foam concrete having a foaming ratio of 69 ± 0.5 % and a slurry density of 573.2 to 578.6 kg / ㎥ was produced. In order to examine the effect of carbonation, blended specimen was cured by two types : normal curing and CO2 curing. As a result of the experiment, the specimens incorporating AOD slag showed higher compressive strength than Plain after CO2 curing. According to the analysis of the image of foam concrete, it was confirmed that the ST30 has a lower total pore volume and average pore size than plain, resulting in high compressive strength. The SEM analysis confirmed the formation of calcite by carbonation of AOD slag. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, the increase of CO2 uptake was confirmed by the incorporation of AOD slag. Foam concrete has a higher porosity than normal concrete, so it is expected that carbon-capture performance can be improved by using a AOD slag.
