Properties of Self-Compacting Concrete Using Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag and Fly ash (고로슬래그미분말 및 플라이애쉬를 사용한 고유동콘크리트의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this research, the physical properties of self compacting concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash as a part of cement were investigated. Concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash was prepared with various ground granulated blast furnace slag(30-50 volume %) and fly ash(10-20 volume %) replacement for cement. The effect of each of the materals, which have effects on self compacting concrete made by the basic mix proportion used granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash after hardening, has been checked. The workability, flowing characteristics, resistance of segregation of materals, air content, and compressive strength of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash were tested and the results were compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete. In the experiment, we acquired satisfactory results at the point of flowing characteristics and strengths of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace and slag fly ash within the replacement ratio of 65%

  • In this paper, we carried out fundamental experiments to use the steel manufacturing slag as a concrete aggregate. Generally there are two types of slag, the blast-furnace slag and the steel manufacturing slag. The latter is classified by the difference of manufacturing method of steel into the convertor slag and the electric-furnace slag. The steel manufacturing slag mainly contains SiO2 and CaO as the chmical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the steel manufacturing slag makes the expansion of volume change. Therefore, we primarily investigated physical properties, expansion mechanism, pH value, aging effects and aging methods in the steel manufacturing slag. Then compressive strength of concrete with steel slag aggregate is measured.

  • In general, magnetite or barite (density: more than 4.0ton/㎥) has been used in concrete for radiation shielding, and radiation tests have been performed to evaluate shielding performance. However, researchers have not studied concrete for radiation shielding that utilizes electric arc furnace oxidizing slag. This research aims to utilize electric arc furnace oxidizing slag which depends on reclamation as environment-friendly concrete materials by using coarse and fine aggregates of electric arc furnace slag containing 30% ferrous metal and with a density of around 3.0~3.8 ton/㎥. Accordingly, this research has judged that the high density electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate can be applied to radiation shielding concrete. It has also examined the possibility of developing radiation shielding concrete utilizing electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate by comparing concrete utilizing all fine and coarse aggregate of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag with concrete using magnetite.

Durability of Alkali-Activated Blast Furnace Slag Concrete: Chloride Ions Diffusion (알칼리 활성 슬래그 콘크리트의 내구성: 콘크리트의 염소이온 확산)

  • The aim of the present study is to investigate some characteristics of concrete according to addition of blast furnace slag and alkali-activator dosages. Blast furnace slag was used at 30%, 50% replacement by weight of cement, and liquid sulfur having NaOH additives was chosen as the alkaline activator. In order to evaluate characteristics of blast furnace slag concrete with sulfur alkali activators, compressive strength test, total porosity, chloride ions diffusion coefficient test were performed. The early-compressive strength characteristics of blast furnace slag concrete using a sulufr-alkali activators was compared with those of reference concrete and added 30, 50% blast furnace slag concrete. Also, Blast furnace slag concrete using sulfur-alkali activators enhanced the total porosity, chloride ions diffusion coefficient than two standard concrete. Alkali-activated blast furnace slag concrete was related to total porosity, compressive strength and chloride ions diffusion coefficient each others. As a result, it should be noted that the sulfur-alkali activators can not only solve the demerit of blast furnace slag concrete but also offer the chloride resistance of blast furnace slag concrete using sulfur alkali activators to normal concrete.

Radiation Shielding Property of Concrete Using the Rapidly Cooled Steel Slag from Oxidizing Process in the Converter Furnace as Fine Aggregate

  • Each year, about four million tons of steel slag, a by-product produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron in the converter furnace, is generated. It is difficult to recycle this steel slag as aggregate for concrete because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag results in a volume expansion that leads to cracking. However, the steel slag used in this study is atomized using an air-jet method, which rapidly changes the melting substance at high temperature into a solid at a room temperature and prevents free-CaO from being generated in steel slag. This rapidly-cooled steel slag has a spherical shape and is even heavier than natural aggregate, making it suitable for the aggregate of radiation shielding concrete. This study deals with the radiation shielding property of concrete that uses the rapidly-cooled steel slag from the oxidizing process in the converter furnace as fine aggregate. It was shown that the radiation shielding performance of concrete mixed with rapidly-cooled steel slag is even more superior than that of ordinary concrete.

A Study on Strength and Permeability of Cooper Slag mixed Porous Concrete (동제련 슬래그를 혼입한 포러스 콘크리트의 강도 및 투수성능에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify basic property of porous concrete using cooper slag as fine aggregate. The specimens were made with cooper slag with various mixing ratio(10, 20, 30, 50%), porous concrete and porous concrete containing river fine aggregate and crushed fine aggregate, which W/B ratio fixed 0.25. Compressive strength, Flexural strength, coefficient of permeability. From the test results, various fine aggregate mixing ratio improves compressive strength and flexural strength, but cooper slag fine aggregate mixing ratio over 20%, concrete indicates trend to decrease performance of permeability. Concrete containing fine aggregate is improved the performance of permeability and strength compared to other specimen, when age 28days, and cooper slag mixing ratio less than 20% concrete indicates better performance than cooper slag mixing ratio 20% over.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the suitability of steel slag(is divided with electric arc furnace slag and converter slag) as concrete aggregate by measuring physical and chemical characteristics of it. The steel slag mainly contains SiO$_2$ and CaO as the chemical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the slag causes slag's volume to expand. Therefore, we used several aging methods in order to decrease the characteristics of slag volume expansion. The physical properties of steel slag aggregate are researched and then the strength of concrete with the steel slag aggregate is measured.

  • In this study, we investigate the difference of concrete between natural aggregate and electric are furnace(EAF) slag one in oder to use EAF slag aggregate as coarse aggregate in concrete. We find the physical and chemical properties of EAF slag aggregate for the aging process. We consider the properties od the concrete made with EAF slag aggregate which are compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity.

  • This study is to investigate durability in concrete containing slag powder and limestone power. The variables are the substitution ratio of slag powder and limestone powder. In order to study the effect of slag powder and limestone powder, all mixtures were prepared at a fixed water/cement ratio, slump, and entrained air quantity. When concrete containing slag powder is mixing rate 40%, durability appeared the highest in general. When concrete containing limestone powder is mixing rate 10% in all experiments, the most suitable result appeared.

Concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag was prepared with various ground granulated blast furnace slag replacement(20~80 volume %) for cement and the quantities of coarse aggregate in concrete were 50%, 55% and 60% of ratio of absolute volume of coarse aggregate. The workability, flowing characteristics, air content and compressive strength of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag were tested and the results were compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete. In the experiment, we acquired satisfactory results at the point of flowing characteristics and strengths of concrete using ground granulated blast furnace slag within tile replacement ratio of 50% and the optimum quantity of coarse aggregate in concrete was found to be 50%~55% of ratio of absolute volume of coarse aggregate.
