Rheological properties of ordinary portland cement (OPC) containing metakaoline (MK), granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PCA) were investigated using a mini-slump test, sedimentation test and viscometer. Fluidity of cement pastes containing MK (OPC-MK, OPC-MK-GBS systems) with PCA were higher than those of the cement pastes without MK(OPC, OPC-GBS systems). Colloid suspensions with $0.1\%$ PCA were changed from stable sedimentation behaviors to flocculation behaviors in the OPC-MK, OPC-GBS and OPC-MK-GBS systems. The colloid suspensions showed stable sedimentation behaviors with PCA greater than $0.2\%$. The OPC system showed shear thinning behavior. However, the other systems showed weak shear thinning behaviors with PCA. Rheological properties of cement pastes were improved when MK and GBS were contained together. The rheological properties of OPC-MK, OPC-GBS and OPC-MK-GBS systems were improved by PCA added greater than $0.2\%$.
In order to enhance the greenness in the strain-hardening composites and to reduce the high cost of typical polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composite (PVA-ECC), an affordable strain-hardening composite with green binder content has been proposed. For optimizing the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites, this paper investigates the effects of polypropylene fibers on the first cracking strength, fracture properties, and micromechanical parameters of cementitious composites. For this purpose, digital image correlation (DIC) technique was utilized to monitor crack propagation. In addition, to have an in-depth understanding of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. To understand the effect of fibers on the strain hardening behavior of cementitious composites, ten mixes were designed with the variables of fiber length and volume. To investigate the micromechanical parameters from fracture tests on notched beam specimens, a novel technique has been suggested. In this regard, mechanical and fracture tests were carried out, and the results have been discussed utilizing both fracture and micromechanical concepts. This study shows that the fiber length and volume have optimal values; therefore, using fibers without considering the optimal values has negative effects on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites.

In this study, to investigate shrinkage and cracking behavior of 120MPa UHSC, free and restrained drying shrinkage test were performed. Three strength levels(50MPa, 80MPa, 120MPa) were used and the effect of mineral admixtures(fly ash, slag) on free and restrained shrinkage was investigated. From comparing the result of pin -penetration test with the result of ring test, Time-Zero was determined as initial set. Shrinkage test results show that autogenous shrinkage of UHSC was much higher than that of HSC, VHSC and fly ash delayed cracking age in UHSC by decreasing autogenous shrinkage. Additional free concrete rings(with restraint removed) were also tested to check the influence of the geometry of the specimens on free shrinkage. And then the relationship between free shrinkage and restrained shrinkage was investigated.
The formulation of self-compacting concretes (SCC) and the study of their properties at the laboratory level were currently well mastered. The aim of this work is to characterize SCC under hot climatic conditions and their effects on the properties of fresh and hardened SCC. Particularly, the effect of the initial wet curing time on the mechanical behavior such as the compressive strength and the durability of the SCCs (acid and sulfate attack) as well as the microstructure of SCCs mixtures. In this study, we used two types of cement, Portland cement and slag cement, three water/binder (W/B) ratio (0.32, 0.38 and 0.44) and five curing modes. The obtained results shows that the compressive strength is strongly influenced by the curing methods, 7-days of curing in the water and then followed by a maturing in a hot climate was the optimal duration for the development of a better compressive strength, regardless of the type of binder and the W/B ratio.
In the present study, the multiple light scattering method was used for analysis of early hardening behavior of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) containing inorganic additives. In order to improve the properties of self-manufactured NHL, blast furnace slag and three types of gypsum were mixed with mixing ratio, and a water/solid ratio of fresh NHL paste was fixed 0.6. The fresh pastes in flat-bottomed cylindrical glass tubes were placed in the instrument. The backscattering flux (BS) of light from fresh pastes was then periodically measured at 10 minutes intervals the entire length of the sample (55mm) at $23^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The rate of increase of BS, slope of a linear equation to the mean value of BS (%) as a function of hydration time, was increased from 0.02 to 0.38 BS %/hour due to addition of blast furnace slag and gypsum. In the case of addition of hemi-hydrate, BS (%) and rate of increase in BS were highest.

The use of blast-furnace slag (BFS) in making not only normal concrete but also high-performance concrete has several advantages with respect to workability, long-term strength and durability. However, slag concrete tends to show more shrinkage than normal concrete, especially autogenous shrinkage. High autogenous shrinkage would result in severe cracking if they are not controlled properly. Therefore, in order to minimize the shrinkage stress and to ensure the service life of concrete structures, the autogenous shrinkage behavior of concrete containing BFS should be understood. In this study, small prisms made of concrete with water-binder (cement+BFS) ratio (W/B) ranging from 0.27 to 0.42 and BFS replacement level of $0\%$, $30\%$, and $50\%$, were prepared to measure the autogenous shrinkage. Based on the test results, thereafter, material constants in autogenous shrinkage prediction model were determined. In particular, an effective autogenous shrinkage defined as the shrinkage that contributes to the stress development was introduced. Moreover, an estimation formula of the 28-day effective autogenous shrinkage was proposed by considering various W/B's. Test results showed that autogenous shrinkage increased with replacement level of BFS at the same W/B. Interestingly, the increase of autogenous shrinkage is dependent on the W/B at the same content of BFS; the lower W/B, the smaller increasing rate. In concluding, it is necessary to use the combination of other mineral admixtures such as shrinkage reducing admixture or to perform sufficient moisture curing on the construction site in order to reduce the autogenous shrinkage of BFS concrete.

The present paper describes the results of high speed photography, acoustic emission (AE) detection and plasma light emission (LE) measurement during $CO_2$ laser welding of 304 stainless steel in different processing conditions. Video images with high spatial and temporal resolution allowed to observe the melt dynamics and keyhole evolution. The existence of keyhole was confirmed by the slag motion on the weld pool. The characteristic frequencies of flow instability and keyhole fluctuations at different welding speed were measured and compared with the results of Fourier analyses of temporal AE and LE spectra. The experimental results were compared with the newly developed numerical model of keyhole dynamics. The model is based on the assumption that the propagation of front part of keyhole into material is due to the melt ejection driven by laser induced surface evaporation. The calculations predict that a high speed melt flow is induced at the front part of keyhole when the sample travel speed exceeds several 10 mm/s. The numerical analysis also shows the hump formation on the front keyhole wall surface. Experimentally observed melt behavior and transformation of the AE and LE spectra with variation of welding speed are qualitatively in good agreement with the model predictions.
The oxygen gas behavior in PDP (plasma Display Panel) glass melts doped with sulfate ($SO_4^{-2}$) or blast furnace slag (BFS, $S^{2-}$) or both by means of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrodes was observed after the first fining. The temperature dependence of oxygen equilibrium pressure ($P_{O2}$) in each melt showed typical behavior, namely $P_{O2}$ decreased as temperature decreased. This suggests that an oxidation of $S^{4+}$ to $S^{6+}$ took place. However, the $P_{O2}$-value at constant temperature increased in the following order: BFS$P_{O2}$ of the melt doped with sulfate+BFS was much lower than that of the melt with only sulfate, although only 10% of sulfur was added by the BFS. This behavior can be explained by the redox reaction between sulfide ions in the BFS and dissolved oxygen ions in the melt during the first fining.
If cement can be manufactured with industrial byproducts such as granulated blast furnace slag, phosphogypsum, and waste lime instead of clinker, there would be many advantages, including maximum use of these industrial byproducts for high value-added resources, conservation of natural resources and energy by omitting the use of clinker, minimized environmental pollution problems caused by CO2 discharge, and reduction of the production cost. By this reason, in this study, mechanical behavior tests of non-burnt cement concrete were performed, and elasticity modulus and stress-strain relationship of non-burnt cement concrete were proposed. 6 test members were manufactured and tested according to reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength. By the test results, there was no difference between ordinary concrete and non-burnt cement concrete of flexural behavior. In order to verify the proposed non-burnt cement concrete model, nonlinear analytical model was derived by using strain compatibility method. By the results of comparison between test results, ordinary concrete model and proposed model, The proposed model well predicted the flexural behavior of non-burnt cement concrete.

GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) is a byproduct with engineering advantages and HVSC (High Volume Slag Concrete) is widely attempted due to active utilization and reduction of eco-load. In the present work, characteristics of drying shrinkage and early-aged behavior are evaluated for the concrete with 65% replacement ratio of GGBFS and 50MPa of design strength. For the work, 3 different mix conditions are considered and several tests including slump flow, compressive strength, drying and autogeneous shrinkage are performed. From the test, OPC 100 mixture without replacement shows higher strength development before 7 days, however the strength reduction in concrete replaced with GGBFS is not significant due to sufficient free water for cement hydration. OPC 100 mixture also shows significant drying shrinkage due to a great autogeneous shrinkage before 3 days. In the concrete with GGBFS replacement, the drying shrinkage behavior is improved due to relatively small deformation by autogeneous shrinkage. The mixture (OPT BS 65) with lower w/b ratio (0.27) and unit content of water ($160kg/m^3$) shows more improved shrinkage behavior than BS 65 mixture which has simple replacement of GGBFS with 0.30 of w/b and $165kg/m^3$ of water unit content.
