Steel slag is produced during steel making process. Compared with the blast furnace slag, converter slag has the expansibility due to the reaction with water and free CaO. Therefore it is specified in Standard Specification for Concrete in Korea that steel slag aggregate must not be used in concrete. In this study, atomized steel slag aggregate is conducted from converter slag by the atomizing method. Atomized steel slag and conventional converter slag are same in its composite by nature in the converter but compounds of the composite become different because of different method of slag treatment. Especially atomized steel slag aggregate overcomes expansibility that is the weak point for usage. It is researched whether it has the possibility, suitability for fine aggregate in concrete. Slump and air content are measured in fresh concrete, compressive and bending strength in hardened concrete. These is compared with control concrete with washed sand.

In this paper, we carried out fundamental experiments to use steel manufacturing slag as a concrete aggregate. Generally, there are two types of slag, the blast-furnace slag and the steel manufacturing slag. The latter is classified by the difference of manufacturing method of steel into the convertor slag and the electric-furnace slag. The steel manufacturing slag mainly contains $SiO_2$ and CaO as the chemical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the steel manufacturing slag made the expansion of volume change, Therefore, we primarily investigated physical properties, expansion mechanism, pH value, aging effect and aging methods in the steel manufacturing slag, Then compressive strength of concrete with steel slag aggregate is measured.
The effects of slag prticle size, $Na_2SO_4$ addition and sulphide in slag to the foam formation was investigated. This investigation showed that the slag particle size and the amount of $Na_2O$ had produced effects on the size of the foam, foam distribution and firing temperatures. In addition to that the amount of sulphide loss during the firing was controlling factor for the foam formation. The smaller slag particles and higher firing temperatures increased the loss of sulphide in the slag. The addition of $Na_2SO_4$ in the slag batch was likely to inhibit the foam formation. The larger slag particles resutled in the larger foam size and tended to be increasing the batch firing temperature. The main constituents of slag formed glass consisted of wallstonite and glassy phase. It is believed that the controlling the slag particle size and the amount of $Na_2SO_4$ in the slag batch will probably be main factors in foam formation.
The study objective was to evaluate the enhanced removal of high concentrations of phosphorus from synthetic wastewater (solely phosphorus-containing) and real wastewater (pig manure) by using carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated steel slag. Generally, phosphorus removal by steel slag is attributed to Ca2+ eluted from the slag. However, in this study, CNT was used to control the excess release of Ca2+ from steel slag and increase the phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal rate by the uncoated steel slag was lower than that of the CNT-coated steel slag, even though the Ca2+ concentrations were higher in the solution containing the uncoated steel slag. Therefore, the phosphorus removal could be attributed to both precipitation with Ca2+ eluted from steel slag in aqueous solution and adsorption onto the surface of the CNT-coated steel slag. Furthermore, the protons released from the CNT surface by exchanging with divalent cations acted to reduce the pH increase of the solution, which is attributed to the OH- eluted from the steel slag. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of the CNT-coated steel slags followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the uncoated and CNT-coated steel slags was 6.127 and 9.268 mg P g-1 slag, respectively. In addition, phosphorus from pig manure was more effectively removed by the CNT-coated steel slag than by the uncoated slag. Over 24 hours, the PO4-P removal in pig manure was 12.3% higher by the CNT-coated slag. This CNT-coated steel slag can be used to remove both phosphorus and metals and has potential applications in high phosphorus-containing wastewater like pig manure.
Air-cooled slag showed grindability approximately twice as good as that of water-cooled slag. While the studied water-cooled slag was composed of glass as constituent mineral, the air-cooled slag was mainly composed of melilite. It is assumed that the sulfur in air-cooled slag is mainly in the form of CaS, which is oxidized into $CaS_2O_3$ when in contact with air. $CaS_2O_3$, then, is released mainly as $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ion when in contact with water. However, the sulfur in water-cooled slag functioned as a constituent of the glass structure, so the$S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion was not released even when in contact with water. When no chemical admixture was added, the blended cement of air-cooled slag showed higher fluidity and retention effect than those of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. It seems that these discrepancies are caused by the initial hydration inhibition effect of cement by the $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion of air-cooled slag. When a superplasticizer is added, the air-cooled slag used more superplasticizer than did the blast furnace slag for the same flow because the air-cooled slag had higher specific surface area due to the presence of micro-pores. Meanwhile, the blended cement of the air-cooled slag showed a greater fluidity retention effect than that of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. This may be a combined effect of the increased use of superplasticizer and the presence of released $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion; however, further, more detailed studies will need to be conducted.
It is a known fact that the cement production is responsible for almost 5% of total worldwide $CO_2$ emission, the primary factor affecting global warming. Geopolymers are valuable as ordinary Portland cement (OPC) substitutes because geopolymers release 80% less $CO_2$ than OPC and have mechanical properties sufficiently similar to those of OPC. Therefore, geopolymers have proven attractive to eco-friendly construction industries. Geopolymers can be fabricated from aluminum silicate materials with alkali activators such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, and so on. Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) slag has been used for fabricating geopolymers. In general, IGCC slag geopolymers are fabricated with finely ground and sieved (<128 mesh) IGCC slag. The grinding process of as-received IGCC slag is one of the main costs in geopolymer production. Therefore, the idea of using as-received IGCC slag (before grinding the IGCC slag) as aggregates in the geopolymer matrix was introduced to reduce production cost as well as to enhance compressive strength. As-received IGCC slag (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt%) was added in the geopolymer mixing process and the mixtures were compared. The compressive strength of geopolymers with an addition of 10 wt% as-received IGCC slag increased by 19.84% compared to that with no additional as-received IGCC slag and reached up to 41.20 MPa. The enhancement of compressive strength is caused by as-received IGCC slag acting as aggregates in the geopolymer matrix like aggregates in concrete. The density of geopolymers slightly increased to $2.1-2.2g/cm^3$ with increasing slag addition. Therefore, it is concluded that a small addition of as-received IGCC slag into the geopolymer can increase compressive strength and decrease the total cost of the product. Moreover, the direct use of as-received IGCC slag may contribute to environment protection by reducing process time and $CO_2$ emission.

In this paper, we evaluated the suitability of converter slag as concrete aggregate by measuring physical and chemical characteristics of converter slag. The converter slag mainly contains SiO₂and CaO as the chemical composition. The reaction with water and a little of free CaO in the slag causes slag's volume to expanse. Therefore, we used several aging method in order to decrease the characteristics of slag volume expansion. Then the compressive strength of concrete with the converter slag aggregate is measured.

Several studies have reported that Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag improved the properties of concrete. The Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag could be a good alternative in the shortage of aggregate situation. Slag shows the possibility of influential aggregate and effect of environment preservation. This study presents that the basic properties of fresh concrete using Air-cooled Blast-furnace slag aggregate and Water-cooled Blast-furnace slag aggregate. Testing Factors of this study are concrete slump, slump loss, bleeding, and air contents. The result of this study is below. 1) In case of proportion slag and grave is 50 to 50, the biggest slump value is measured. 2) In the concrete using of air-cooled Blast-furnace slag aggregate, the bleeding capacity is a little. In the concrete using of Water-cooled Blast-furnace slag aggregate, the bleeding capacity goes up to 50% increase. 3) As substitution rate of the granulated blast-furnace slag goes up, air content is increased.

Presented in the paper are findings of a project that examined the effect of slag grade and cement source on the performance of concrete mixtures. Slag cement contents were 20, 40, and 60 percent of the total cementitious material content. Two grades of slag cement were examined (Gr. 100 and Gr. 120) along with two sources of Type I cement. Compressive strength, durability, and permeability were measured. The results showed that the cement source affected the early age strength of the mixtures. At 28 days of age, mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag cement had higher compressive strengths than mixtures containing Gr. 100 slag cement, but by 90 days of age, the trend reversed. As for the chloride ion penetrability, mixtures cast with Gr. 100 slag cement passed fewer coulombs at 28 and 90 days of age than similar mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag. Mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag had the greatest durability factors.
