  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of desensitization and flooding on the behavior of dogs during grooming, focusing on their response to the sound and skin stimulation while using a clipper. A total of 20 adult dogs over two years of age with complete personality formation were included in the study. Ten dogs, of which three were Bichons (average weight 5 kg), four were Poodles (average weight 5 kg), and three were Malteses (average weight 4 kg), were subjected to the desensitization process. The remaining 10 adult dogs were subjected to the flooding experiment, and were of the same breed and average weight as the adult dogs used in the desensitization process. The desensitization and the flooding were performed three times a day (approximately 1 min per session) for 10 days. For desensitization, statistical significance was observed only on the fifth day, when compared by breed (p<0.05). Overall, when compared by measurement day, the results of desensitization for Bichon, Poodle and Maltese dogs were statistically significant (p<0.05). The results for the Bichon, Poodle, and Maltese dogs that were subjected to flooding were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in the results of the flooding on the second and ninth days (p<0.05); however, flooding had no effect on the other days (p>0.05). Desensitization using the clipper, a beauty tool, was faster than flooding in achieving stabilization. In conclusion, desensitization and flooding showed positive results on the stress relief and emotions of dogs during grooming, with respect to cosmetic fear response.

  • To investigate the alleviative effect of white tea water extract on the inflammation and skin barrier damage, skin aging animal model was produced by the irradiation of UVB to the backs of hairless mice for 12 weeks. And then experimental materials were applied topically for 4 weeks. At the 28th day of experiment, positive control (PC, 0.01% retinoic acid treatment) and experimental groups (E1, 1% white tea water extract treatment; E2, 2% white tea water extract treatment) had significantly (p<0.001) lower values of both skin erythema index and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) than the control (C, saline treatment) group. The appearance of mast cell and the degree of its degranulation in dermal and subcutaneous layers were remarkably reduced in E1 and E2 groups compared to the C group. It is found that white tea water extract is effective in skin barrier damage and inflammation in hairless mouse.

  • This study attempted to investigate the physiological activities of Passiflora caerulea extract and provide basic data needed to verify its availability as an inner beauty material. To examine its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects, the followings were measured: total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, DPPH radical scavenging activity, cytotoxicity and NO inhibition effects in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and HDF cells and MMP-1 inhibitory effects in HDF cells. The results found the followings: First, polyphenol and flavonoid contents were great with 157 mg/g and 173.5 mg/g respectively at 10mg/mL, and DPPH radical scavenging activity was confirmed. In RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and HDF cells, no cytotoxicity was observed for Passiflora caerulea extract. In addition, 69.3% anti-inflammatory effects were found at 100 ㎍/mL through NO inhibition in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In addition, a significant inhibition of MMP-1 expression in HDF cell was confirmed. The above results confirmed the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Passiflora caerulea extract, low toxicity on skin cells and its anti-aging effects by inhibiting MMP-1 expression. Therefore, it appears that Passiflora caerulea extract would be available as diverse inner beauty materials.

  • Alakaline phosphatase (ALP)- or horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-antibody conjugate was used frequently on the immunological detection methods such as enzyme-linked immunosobent assay (ELISA), immunobolt, immunohistochemistry. The classical enzyme-antibody coupling method by one-step (direction) injection of glutaraldehyde bring into being disadvantage such as low sensitivity of antigen detection because of homopolymers. This study was modified with the dialysis glutaraldehyde method to provide simple coupling through E-amino residues present in most protein. The dialysis glutaraldehyde coupling effects were better than the classical one-step glutaraldehyde injection in antigen detection of ELISA and immunobolt. Optimal dose of the dialysis glutaraldehyde solution was 0.10-0.25 %. This results suggest that the dialysis glutaraldehyde coupling method can readily applied to antigen detection of in vitro and in vivo.

  • Mume fructus is the roasted fruits of Prunus mume and has been used as traditional chinese medicine. In this study, mume fructus extracts were prepared by three different methods including hot water extract (sample1), fermentation extract using Lactobacillus (Sample2-LP and sample-LA) and ethanol extract (sample3). Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were improved by fermentation process, compared to water extract. Sample 3 showed the highest activity in DPPH radical scavenging. The cytotoxicity of the sample 2-LP was in the range of 83.3% cell viability at $300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ concentration. Mume fructus extracts in a concentration-dependent manner inhibited melanogenesis and NO synthesis was inhibited. Specifically, the extracts fermented by L. plantarum (sample2-LP) showed higher anti-oxidant activity, anti-inflammatory and skin whitening activity than other extracts. It suggests that sample 2-LP could be potentially used as a resource of materials for functional cosmetics.
