In recent years, due to the many advantages cable-stayed bridges have often constructed in medium and long span. These advantages can be listed as an aesthetically pleasing appearance, economic and easy construction, etc. The main structural elements of cable-stayed bridges are listed as deck, pylon, cables and foundation. Perhaps one of the most vital and expensive of these structural elements is stay-cables. Stay-cables ensure the allowable displacement and distribution of bending moments along the bridge deck with prestressing force. Therefore the optimum design of the stay-cables and prestressing force are very important in achieving the performance expected from the cable-stayed bridges. This paper aims to obtain the stay-cables size and prestressing force optimization of the cable-stayed bridge. For this purpose, single pylon and fan type cable configuration Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge was selected as an example. The three dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the bridge was created with SAP2000. Analysis of the 3D FEM of the bridge was conducted under the different combined effects of the self-weight of the structural element, prestressing force of stay-cable and live load. Stay-cable stress and deck displacement were taken into account as constraints for the optimization problem. To optimize this existing bridge a metaheuristic algorithm named Jaya was used in the optimization process. 3D FEM of the selected bridge was repeatedly analyzed by using Open Applicable Programming Interface (OAPI) properties of SAP2000. To carry out the optimization process the developed program which integrates the Jaya algorithm and the required codes for calling SAP2000 is coded in MATLAB. At the end of the study, the total weight of the stay-cables was reduced more than 40% according to existing stay cables under loads taken into account.

Recently mobile phone camera become generally spread, it is required to develop high resolution, multi-functional camera module for obtaining high image quality. To satisfy this demand, number of pixels has been increased and pixel size decreased in small mobile phone cameras. As a result, image quality is seriously dropped by blur phenomena. Especially when hand tremble is occurred, image quality is dropped by camera shake. Therefore, to obtain high quality image, it is necessary to compensate user's hand tremble. In this paper, we propose voice coil actuator for compensating hand tremble, which can apply optical image stabilization (OIS) system. Sensitivity analysis and size optimization are performed to obtain high driving force. Finally, it is confirmed that the optimized electromagnetic circuit can be applied in OIS system.

All the forces in the real world act dynamically on structures. Design and analysis should be performed based on the dynamic loads for the safety of structures. Dynamic (transient or vibrational) responses have many peaks in the time domain. Topology optimization, which gives an excellent conceptual design, mainly has been performed with static loads. In topology optimization, the number of design variables is quite large and considering the peaks is fairly costly. Topology optimization in the frequency domain has been performed to consider the dynamic effects; however, it is not sufficient to fully include the dynamic characteristics. In this research, linear dynamic response topology optimization is performed in the time domain. First, the necessity of topology optimization to directly consider the dynamic loads is verified by identifying the relationship between the natural frequency of a structure and the excitation frequency. When the natural frequency of a structure is low, the dynamic characteristics (inertia effect) should be considered. The equivalent static loads (ESLs) method is proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. ESLs are made to generate the same response field as that from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic response analysis. The method was originally developed for size and shape optimizations. The original method is expanded to topology optimization under dynamic loads. At each time step of dynamic analysis, ESLs are calculated and ESLs are used as the external loads in static response topology optimization. The results of topology optimization are used to update the design variables (density of finite elements) and the updated design variables are used in dynamic analysis in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The updating rules and convergence criteria in the ESLs method are newly proposed for linear dynamic response topology optimization. The proposed updating rules are the artificial material method and the element elimination method. The artificial material method updates the material property for dynamic analysis at the next cycle using the results of topology optimization. The element elimination method is proposed to remove the element which has low density when static topology optimization is finished. These proposed methods are applied to some examples. The results are discussed in comparison with conventional linear static response topology optimization.
The most difficult and time-intensive issue in the successful implementation of genetic algorithms is to find good parameter setting, one of the most popular subjects of current research in genetic algorithms. In this study, we present a new efficient experimental design method for parameter optimization in a genetic algorithm for general job shop scheduling problem using the Taguchi method. Four genetic parameters including the population size, the crossover rate, the mutation rate, and the stopping condition are treated as design factors. For the performance characteristic, makespan is adopted. The number of jobs, the number of operations required to be processed in each job, and the number of machines are considered as noise factors in generating various job shop environments. A robust design experiment with inner and outer orthogonal arrays is conducted by computer simulation, and the optimal parameter setting is presented which consists of a combination of the level of each design factor. The validity of the optimal parameter setting is investigated by comparing its SN ratios with those obtained by an experiment with full factorial designs.

In case of the optimization problems that have many design variables, the conventional genetic algorithms(GA) fall into a trap of local minima with high probability. This problem is called the premature convergence problem. To overcome it, the parallel genetic algorithms which adopt the migration mechanism have been suggested. But it is hard to determine the several parameters such as the migration size and the migration interval for the parallel GAs. Therefore, we propose a new method to determine the migration interval automatically in this paper. To verify its validity, it is applied to some traditional mathematical optimization problems and is compared with the conventional parallel GA. It is also applied to the optimal design of the brushless DC motor for an electric wheel chair which is a real world problem and has five design variables.

Almost all buildings/infrastructures made of composite materials are fabricated without proper design. Unlike airplane or automobile parts, prototype test is impossible. One cannot destroy 10 story buildings or 100-meter long bridges. People try to build 100-story buildings or several thousand meter long bridges. In order to realize "composites in construction", the following subjects must be studied in detail, for his design: Concept optimization, Simple method of analysis, Folded plate theory, Size effects in failure, and Critical frequency. Unlike the design procedure with conventional materials, his design should include material design, selection of manufacturing methods, and quality control methods, in addition to the fabrication method.on method.

A genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization technique based on natural evolution theory to find the global optimal solution. Unlike the gradient-based method, it can design nanoscale structures in the electric field because it does not require sensitivity calculation. This research intends to design a nanoaperture with an unprecedented shape by the topology optimization scheme based on the GA and ON/OFF method in the visible frequency range. This research mainly aims to maximize the transmission rate at a measuring area located 10nm under the exit plane and to minimize the electric distribution at other locations. The finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization process are performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming. The final results of the optimized model are analyzed by a comparison of the electric field intensity and the spot size of near field with those of the initial model.

Generally, there are several types in rear suspension. The rear suspension of subframe type consisting of side member and front/rear cross member is widely used in a medium car and full car. In the small car case, the beam of tubular type without independent suspension system is used to reduce manufacturing cost. The optimized rear suspension of subframe type using hydroforming method has been developed in this study. In designing suspension, the driving stability and durability performance should be considered as an important factor. The stability is related to dynamic frequency and durability is connected with stress analysis of structure. We focus on increasing the stiffness of suspension and decreasing the maximum stress relating to durability cycle life. For making use of the merits of hydroforming which is possible to make the bead, tube expansion, and feeding in desiring position, several optimization design techniques such as shape, size, and topology optimization are proposed. This optimization scheme based on the sensitivity can provide distinguished performance improvement in using hydroforming. Through commercial software based on the finite element, the superiority of this design method is demonstrated.

The size and layout of user interface components need to be optimally designed in terms of reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility in order for efficient and effective use of products. The present study develops an ergonomic design method which optimizes the size and layout of user interface components using adaptive genetic algorithm. The developed design method determines a near-optimal design which maximizes the aggregated score of 4 ergonomic design criteria (reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility). The adaptive genetic algorithm used in the present study finds a near-optimum by automatically adjusting the key parameter (probability of mutation) of traditional genetic algorithm according to the characteristic of current solutions. Since the adaptive mechanism partially helps to overcome the local optimality problem, the probability of finding the near-optimum has been substantially improved. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed design method, the present study applied it to the user interface design for a portable wireless communication radio.

Thin-walled structures are efficiently utilized an automobiles, aircraft, satellite and ship as well as needed light weight simultaneously. This paper presents new shape of automobile hood reinforcement that rotating parts as engine, transmission are protected by thin-walled structures. The automobile hood is concerned about the resonance occurs due to the frequency of the rotating parts. The hood must be designed by supporting the stiffness of design loads and considering the natural frequencies. Hence, it is sustained the stiffness and considered the vibration by resonance. It is deep related to ride. Therefore, the topology, shape and size optimization methods are used to design the automobile hood. Topology technique is applied to determine the layout of a structural component optimum size with maximized natural frequency by volume reduction. In this research, The optimal structure layout of an inner reinforcement of an automobile hood for the natural frequency of a designated mode is obtained by using topology optimization method. The optimum size and the optimum shape are determined by PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm.
