Microstructural characteristics of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys during reheating at semi-solid temperature have been investigated. The size and morphology of primary Si particles in wedge-type mold-cast ingot has been compared with hot-rolled sheet and Si particulate reinforced Al composite. Effects of P and Sr addition on the morphological changes of primary Si particles have been also investigated. Observation of the solidification microstructures of the wedge-type mold-cast ingot at different cooling rates showed that alloying elements such as P and Sr affect the morphology of Si particles, especially in the area solidified at a slow cooling rate. Negligible change in the size of primary crystals was observed after reheating experiment, but ${\alpha}-halo$ formed around the Si particles and fine particles of Si precipitated in the surrounding area of the Si particles. In addition, there seemed to be no coarsening with increasing of holding time and the region of ${\alpha}-halo$ being decreased. Nucleation and recrystallization was accelerated with addition of alloying elements during hot rolling resulting in a decrease of primary Si particle size. In the case of extruded specimens, morphological change of primary Si particles was not observed after reheating. No ${\alpha}-halo$ formation was observed in Si reinforced Al composite because of the oxide film formed on the Si particles which acted as a diffusion barrier between substrate and the primary Si particles.

[ $Co_3O_4$ ] particles with non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by various conditions such as preparation temperature, flow rate of carrier gas, and concentration of spray solution using spray pyrolysis. The morphology and crystallinity of the preformed particles obtained by spray pyrolysis at various conditions affected the mean size and morphology of the post-treated $Co_3O_4$ particles. The preformed particles with hollow and porous morphology obtained from spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol turned to $Co_3O_4$ particles with nano size, regular morphology and non-aggregation characteristics after post-treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the preformed particles obtained by the preparation conditions of short residence time of particles inside hot wall reactor and high reactor temperature turned to $Co_3O_4$ particles with aggregated morphology after post-treatment. The mean crystallite size and particle size of the $Co_3O_4$ particles prepared from optimum preparation conditions were 47 nm and 210 nm at post-treatment temperature of $800^{\circ}C$.
To estimate dispersion stability of particles, suspending power and particle size were examined as functions of pHs, surfactants, electrolytes and ionic strengths using ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle as the model of particulate soil. Suspending power and particle size were determined by UV-Vis spectrumeter and by light scattering using the polarization ratio method, respectively. The suspending power was relatively high with polyanion electrolytes and was low with neutral salts. The suspending power was biphasis, minimum pH 6~7, and the effect of surfactant on the suspending power was insignificant. Generally suspending power increased with decreasing the particle size governed aggregation of dispersed particles regardless of solution conditions. Hence the suspending power was inversely related to the particle size.
To introduce flux pinning center in HTS-BSCCO system, nano-size MgO particles were uniformly distributed within the Bi-2223 grain by partial hydration of MgO. The existing method MgO doped Bi-2223 used nato-size MgO powders, which resulted in agglomeration during mixing or grain growth during heat-treatment due to the high surface energy of the fine particles. By hydration of the MgO surface, the agglomeration of the MgO powders was avoided and the size of remaining MgO core was controlled by changing hydration medium and time. The thin film obtained by spin coating of (Bi_$1.8/Pb_{0.4}$)$Sr_2$$_{Ca}$$2.2/Cu_3$$O_{y}$ nitrate solution mixed with hydrated MgO showed the even distribution of nano-size MgO particles in the Bi-2212 grains.s.s.
Deposited road particles (DRPs) were analysed for heavy metal concentrations at four different roads in a city, Korea. The samples were collected using a roadway surface vacuum cleaning vehicle which was commonly used in collecting roadway surface particles. Six particle size ranges were analyzed separately for twelve heavy metal elements (Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Al, As, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Hg). At all sampling sites, the high concentration of the heavy metals occurred in the <74um particle size range, which conventional roadway cleaning vehicles do not remove efficiently. The Pb concentration significantly increased with decreasing particle size of DRPs, and other toxic heavy metals (Cd, Cr and Ni) also showed similar results. The heavy metal concentrations in the smaller size fraction of DRPs is important because they are contaminants that are preferentially transported by road runoff during rainfall.
CdS-QD particles are a nano-sized semiconducting crystal that emits light. Their optical properties show great potential in many areas of applications such as disease-diagnostic reagents, optical technologies, media industries and solar cells. The wavelength of emitting light depends on the particle size and thus the quality control of CdS-QD particle requires accurate determination of the size distribution. In this study, CdS-QD particles were synthesized by a simple ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation method. As a particle stabilizer polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were added. In order to determine the size and size distribution of the CdS-QD particles, sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SdFFF) was employed. Effects of carious parameters including the the flow rate, external field strength, and field programming conditions were investigated to optimize SdFFF for analysis of CdS-QD particles. The Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis show the primary single particle size was ~4 nm, TEM images indicate that the primarty particles were aggregated to form secondary particles having the mean size of about 159 nm. As the concentration of the stabilizer increases, the particle size tends to decrease. Mean size determined by SdFFF, TEM, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were 126, 159, and 152 nm, respectively. Results showed SdFFF may become a useful tool for determination of the size and its distribution of various types of inorganic particles.

This study investigates the effect of particle size on the detergency of particulate soil using an $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particle as the model. Monodispersed spherical $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were prepared by the hydrothermal aging of an acidic $FeCl_3$ and HCl solution. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber was measured by the streaming potential method. The potential energy of interaction between the particle and fiber was calculated using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber and potential energy of interaction between particles and fiber increased with a decreasing particle size in a DBS solution. However, in the nonionic surfactant solution, the $\xi$-potential signs of PET fiber and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were (-) and (+), respectively; there was no repulsive power between the particles and substrate. The adhesion of particles to the fabric increased with increasing particle size in the anionic surfactant solution and their removal from the fabric increased with a decreasing particle size. The adhesion of particles to the fabric and their removal from the fabric was biphasic with a maximum and minimum at 0.1% concentration of the surfactant solution. In the nonionic surfactant solution the adhesion of particles to fabric and their removal from the fabric were greater than the ones in the anionic surfactant DBS solution.
In this study, we developed the nanoparticle multi-generator by 3D printer fusion deposition modeling (FDM) method that can reliably generate and deliver nanoparticles at a constant concentration for inhalation risk assessment. A white ABS filament was used as the test material, and SMPS was used for concentration analysis such as particle size and particle distribution. In the case of particle size, the particle size was divided by 100 nm or less and 100 to 1,000 nm, and the number of particles concentration, mass concentration, median diameter of particles, geometric average particle diameter, etc were measured. The occurrence conditions were the extruder temperature, the extruding speed of the nozzle, and the air flow rate, and experiments were conducted according to the change of conditions including the manufacturer's standard conditions. In addition, the utility of inhalation risk assessment was reviewed through a stability maintenance experiment for 6 h. As a result of the experiment, the size of the nanoparticles increased as the discharger temperature increased, as the discharge speed of the nozzle increased, and as the air flow rate decreased. Also, a constant pattern was shown according to the conditions. Even when particles were generated for a long time (6 h), the concentration was kept constant without significant deviation. The distribution of the particles was approximately 80 % for particles of 60 nm to 260 nm, 1.7 % for 1 ㎛ or larger, 0.908 mg/㎥ for the mass concentration, 111 nm for MMAD and 2.10 for GSD. Most of the ABS particles were circular with a size of less than 10 nm, and these circular particles were aggregated to form a cluster of grape with a size of several tens to several hundred nm.
This study was carried out to discuss the feasibility of wood and plastic wastes as the raw materials for wood particle-plastic composites. For this purpose, composites were manufactured from coarse and fine wood particles and polypropylene fibers by nonwoven web process. And the effect of wood particle size on the performance of the composites were analyzed according to ASTM D 1037-93. In the physical properties of composites, water absorption decreased with the increase of target density and polypropylene fiber content. And the composites with fine wood particles appeared to have slightly lower water absorption than those with coarse wood particles. Thickness swelling did not vary significantly with the increase of target density but increased with the increase of wood particle content. And the composites with fine wood particles were significantly lower in thickness swelling than those with coarse wood particles. In the mechanical properties of composites, dry and wet MOR showed the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content and target density. Dry and wet MOE showed the increasing tendency with the increase of target density but only wet MOE exhibited the increasing tendency with the increase of polypropylene fiber content. Composites with fine wood particles appeared to be generally higher in wet MOR and MOE than those with coarse wood particles. In conclusion, composites with fine wood particles showed generally higher performance than those with coarse ones. Also, composites were significantly superior to control particleboards in the performance, especially in water absorption and thickness swelling.
Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.
