  • The fractal method has recently been applied to a model for determining soil grain size distribution. The objective of this study is to review the applicability of the fractal method for a analysis of submarine sedimentary environments by comparing fractal constants with grain size statistical analysis for the soil samples of Pohang (PH) and Namhae (NH). The y-interception of log (grain size)-log (passing) equation was also used because grain size distribution couldn't be expressed with fractal dimension only. The result of comparison between fractal constants (dimension, y-interception) and grain size statistical indices, the fractal dimension was directly proportional to the mean and the sorting. And the y-interception showed high correlation with the mean. The fractal dimension and y-interception didn't show significant correlation with the skewness and the kurtosis. Thus regression equations between fractal constants and two statistical indices (mean, sorting) were derived. All classifications of the mean and the sorting could be determined using the regression equation based on the fractal dimension and y-interception. Therefore, fractal constants could be used as an alternative index representing the sedimentary environments instead of the mean and sorting.

  • Since particle size distribution curves are useful to estimate permeability of soil, many formulae for permeability coefficient (k) have been published using the parameter from the curves and factors, such as grain size, particle shape and void ratio of soils. However, the parameters such as $C_c,\;C_u$ and $D_n$ derived from only some discrete points on the curve are insufficient to represent the whole gradation. In this paper fractal dimension which is quite new concept and known to be able to represent the entire curve of particle size distribution is employed for the parameters. An empirical formula of permeability coefficient has been developed with fractal dimension and percent of finer than 0.075 mm. The formula developed from this study has confirmed its effectiveness by a series of laboratory tests and comparison to other published formulae. It is found that permeability coefficient is proportional to fractal dimension and inversely proportional to percent of fines.

  • Water samples were collected at 7 sites located along the River Nakdong on 30 occasions. Water qualities, size and fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles were measured. Laser light scattering method was used to obtain the size and $d_F$ of suspended particles. The average size of particles in this river ranged from $89{\mu}m$ and $169{\mu}m$, which appears to be relatively coarse compared with other rivers worldwide. The average $d_F$ of suspended particles in this study ranged from 1.8 to 1.9. The correlation analysis showed that DO, TN, $NO_3$ and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ had significant positive relationships with particles size, whereas flow rates and TSS had negative relationships. Interestingly, the factors of which had positive relationships with particles size showed negative relationship with the fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles. Generally, as the size of particles increased, the fractal dimension of particles decreased which was indicating the shape of the larger particles became more irregular.

  • This study investigated domestic and foreign cycle wear sizing systems for the domestic market and provided basic data for development of a high functional cycle wear with excellent fitness qualities. Each brand was found to have different dimension items and different sizes as well as size deviation and range according to each item. Therefore, a size selected by referring to the dimension items would be expected to have confusion when selecting a size. Domestic brands are able to selects sizes relatively easily because they suggest sizes mainly by height and weight (which are a universal size). However, the development of a sizing system for domestic cycle wear brands is needed because each brand have different sizes according to its dimension items. Foreign brands are also different from domestic brands in size marking items and sizes according to items. Therefore, the establishment of a sizing system standard for foreign brands is necessary because there could be a problem with fitness in the same sizes selected for domestic brands. Cycle wear is also able to cover various body types due to the elasticity of its material; however, and evaluation of fitness and a follow-up study will be necessary to develop cycle wear with a fitness that is proper for a Korean body type.

  • Recently, GIS(Geographic Information System) is used to extract various hydrological factors from DEM(Digital Elevation Model) in river basin. Therefore, this study aims at the determination of river fractal dimension using DEM. In this paper, the main-stream length in river basin was grid-analyzed for each scale(1/5,000, 1/25,000, 1/50,000) and each cell size(5m$\times$5m, l0m$\times$l0m, 20m$\times$20m, 30m$\times$30m, 40m$\times$40m, 50m$\times$50m, 60m$\times$60m, 70m$\times$70m, 80m$\times$80m, 90m$\times$90m, 100m$\times$l00m, 120m$\times$120m, 150m$\times$150m) using GIS. Also, fractal dimension was derived by analyzing correlation among main-stream lengths, scale, and cell size which were calculated here. The result of calculating fractal dimension for each cell size shows that the fractal dimension on the main-stream length is 1.028.

  • The structural properties of varistors surface studied by fractal phenomenon were investigated to verify the relations of electrical characteristics. The SEM photograph of varistors surface were changed by binary code and the grain shape of that were analyzed by fractal dimension. The void of varistors surface was found by fractal program. The relation between grain density and electrical properties depend on fractal dimension. The grain size in varistors surface was decreased by increasing of oxide antimony addition. The grain size of devices by oxide antimony addition were from 5 to $10[{\mu}m]$. The fractal dimension and electrical properties of varistors surface was related to between grain boundary and grain density. The grain size was decreased by increasing of fractal dimensions.

  • Grading of aggregate influences significantly almost all of the concrete performances. The purpose of this paper is to propose practicable equations that express the optimized total aggregate gradation, by weight or by number of particles in a concrete mix. The principle is based on the fractal feature of the grading of combined aggregate in a solid skeleton of concrete. Therefore, equations are derived based on the so-called fractal dimension of the grain size distribution of aggregates. Obtained model was then applied in such a way a correlation between some properties of the dry concrete mix and the fractal dimension of the aggregate gradation has been built. This demonstrates that the parameter fractal dimension is an efficacious tool to establish a unified model to study the solid phase of concrete in order to design aggregate gradation to meet certain requirements or even to predict some characteristics of the dry concrete mixture.

  • Particles of soil are crushed when soil is compacted in the in-situ or lab. Among many factors that affect the crush of particles, compaction energy is a major factor. Because the crush of particles can change physical properties, the analysis of effect of compaction energy is very important. In this study, the fragmentation fractals were used for determining the change in grain size distribution and the effect due to change in grain size distribution was estimated. Compaction energy was increased by 50, 100, 200 and 300% based on the energy of standard A compaction test. As a result, grain size distribution curves were changed and fine particles increased as compaction energy were increased. Relative compaction were ranged between $93.38{\sim}107.67$. Fractal dimension of each site increased as compaction energy increased. Relative compaction is proportional to the fractal dimension but coefficients of permeability were in inverse proportional to the involution of fractal dimension.

  • Strange attractor can be used as a presentation method for signal processing. Fractal dimension is well known method that extract features from attractor. Even though the method provides powerful capabilities for speech processing, there is drawback which should be solved in advance. Normally, the size of the raw signal should be long enough for processing if we use the fractal dimension method. However, in the area of connected-digits problem, normally, syllable or semi-syllable based processing is applied. In this case, there is no evidence that we have sufficient data or not to extract characteristics of attractor. This paper discusses the relationship between the size of the signal data and the calculation result of fractal dimension, and also discusses the efficient way to be applied to connected-digit recognition.
