  • This study is a model study on the contents and methods of intercultural learning. Starting with a discussion of the intercultural learning model construct, it presents key contents important for intercultural learning and learning methods that can increase the effectiveness of intercultural learning. Also, we actually conducted the above learning program at the learning site and discussed the observations and results. It was a case study that allowed us to test the effectiveness of cultural intelligence theory, the latest theory that can improve intercultural competency. In addition, in order for the cultural intelligence theory to be effective in the learning process, it was found that the PBL method, which allows learners to solve problems on their own, rather than cramming education, is useful. Additionally, it was found that the ARCS model was also very effective in motivating and maintaining learners' continuous motivation. At this time, the instructor was also able to see that the effect increases when the role of catalyst becomes the main one.

  • During the breeding season, some Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus osculans) in Yubu Island foraged in the open mudflat area nearby the breeding ground, instead of the tide water line area, main feeding site throughout the year. We found significant differences in foraging behavior and prey species diversity between the two different feeding site types. Even though the birds took more steps for most probably searching preys, their feeding success was much lower in the open mudflat area than the tide water line area. The multiple peck and boring methods were more frequently adopted to catch polychaetes on the open mudflat area, whereas the single peck method was dominant and gastropods and bivalves were main preys in the tide water line area. This study suggests that the bird shows flexible foraging strategy of shifting feeding site, foraging behavior and preys for better reproductive success.

  • The study was carried out to provide information about growth and ecological characteristics by site types of natural deciduous forest in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province. The data were collected from four aspects(the East, the West, the South, and the North) with three elevation(higher than 1.000 m, 700~1,000 m, lower than 700 m) and three topographical conditions(ridge, hill, and valley). Growth parameters by site types were evaluated based on the growth performances of dbh for the last 5 to 10 years; which were also estimated based on both Pressler and Schneider formulae. In addition, ecological characteristics such as Shannon-Wiener's diversity index, evenness index and richness index were analyzed by site types. The management methods by site types were suggested by considering stand density, growth patterns, and ecological characteristics. It was found that the stands on the South and the East are necessary the tending practices to improve growth and ecological characteristics. On the other hand, the West and the North needed the tending practices focusing on stand density management to increase growth rate rather than ecological management. It was also found that the area lower than 700 m in elevation showed Higher growth rate than other areas. As a management standard considered in terms of growth rate, it was suggested that tending practices should be applied to the stands of which growth rate for the last 5 to 10 years were lower than 2%. Considering topographical conditions, valley area showed better ecological characteristics than both ridge and hilly areas. Consequently, it was revealed that the valley areas were suitable for the ecological management.

  • Biological assessments of benthic macroinvertebrates community structure were carried out in ten reservoir inflow and outflow areas of the Nakdong river system from April 2008 to August 2008. The collected benthic macroinvertebrates from the surveyed sites were 9,427.6 inds./$m^2$, 42 species belonging to 29 families and 16 orders. A dominant species was Chironomus sp. and a subdominant species was Ecdyonurus levis. In the all sites, Ephemeroptera had the most number of species (17.81%) and Diptera had the most number of individuals (64.00%). Dominance, species diversity, species richness, and species evenness indexes were 0.68, 2.42, 2.96 and 0.54, respectively. The numbers of benthic macroinvertebrates species in each surveyed site were from 21 (site 9 Jilnal wetland) to 51 (site 2 Yeongcheon reservoir). As a result of an analysis about relative resistance and resilience of stability factors, the most popular group was group I with high indices in both resistance and resilience. Site 7 (Beongae wetland) and site 8 (Jangcheok reservoir) had the highest similarity in the result of cluster analysis using the surveyed benthic macroinvertebrates.

  • Long-term changes of the fish fauna and its community structure from the Jungrang Creek of the Han River system in Seoul were investigeted from 1990 to 2000. Total species occurred during the survey period were 14 species in 6 families, and total individual number was 108,366. Fishes at the Jungrang Creek had not been distributed in the 1980s and 1990 because of heavy water pollution as well as environmental damage in the riparian areas. However, Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus in cyprinidae were rehabitated since the early 1990s when the water quality was improved because of foundation of sewage division pipe. Species nombers gradually increased to 6 species in 1996, 9 species in 1998, and 11 species in 2000. Individual numbers rapidly increased to 164 individuals in 1996, 146 individuals in 1998, and 108,094 individuals in 2000. A large number of Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus, which are abundantly distributed in the main course of the Han River, were found when they migrate to the upper reaches of the Jungrang Creek for spawning. Mass fish floatings were occurred on the 21st of April and the 11th of June in 2000 due to DO depletion at the lower site (Site 4) of discharging point of Jungrang sewage treatment plant and stagnant spot(Site 3) of dammed pool. Major dominant species were Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus (Cyprinidae). Others dominant species were Pseudorasbora lab대 (Cyprinidae) and Silurus asotus (Siluridae). Dominance indices were relatively high (0.79 to 1.00). Species diversity andrichness indices were relatively low (0 to 1.66and 0 to 1.41, respectively). Species diversity and richness indices were slightly higher at the middle reaches (Site 2 and Site 3) than the upper reaches and the mouth of the Jungrang Creek. However, the fish fauna of the Jungrang Creek was very poor and its community structure was very simple.

  • To select indicator insects, the abundance of which is one of the major criteria for the evaluation of agricultural environment, was designated and monitored in the three sites (Hongcheon A, B, and Yangpyeong) from 2001 to 2003. Characteristics of rice cultivation are usual cultivation with 2 or 3 times sprayed chemical agents per year in Hongcheon A site, duck cultivation with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Hongcheon B site, and pond snail with non-sprayed chemical agent, green manure and mowing in Yangpyeong site. Dominant floral species are Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, Echinochioa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois, and Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr. in Hongcheon A site, Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Persicaria thunbergii (Siebold & Zuccarini) H. Gross, and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauvois in Hongcheon B site, and Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel., Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv., and Persicaria langiseta (De Btuyn) Kitagawa in Yangpyeong site. Degree of green naturality (DGN) was higher in Hongcheon B site (2.0) and Yangpyeong site (3.6) than in Hongcheon A site (1.6). Number of species and individual of insects collected in the three sites were abundant on August and September. The species diversity was higher in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong than in Hongcheon A. And Coleoptera was dominant in the all sites. The dominance index (DI) was the lowest, but diversify index (H'), evenness index (E) and richness index (RI) were the highest in Hongcheon B site. Based on three results, indicator insects for the evaluation of agricultural environment were selected as Dolichus halensis in Hongeheon A site, as Pheropsophus. javanus and Polionemobius mikado in Hongcheon B and Yangpyeong sites.

  • This study surveyed the diversity and distributional characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrates and freshwater fish during the period from April to October, 2015 in Seonun Mountain Provincial Park. As a result, a total of 78 species of benthic macroinvertebrates belonging to 50 families, 16 orders, and four phyla were observed in Seonun stream; additionally, 25 species of freshwater fish belonging to six families were identified in all the investigated sites. Among benthic macroinvertebrates, Ephemeroptera(13 spp.: 22.81%) was the largest group in terms of species richness. In the FFGs, gathering-collectors(30 spp.: 36.14%) were relatively larger as represented by Ephemeroptera that usually inhabit fast flowing streams. In the HOGs, clingers(23 spp.: 29.49%) and burrowers(17 spp.: 21.79%) were the dominant groups. For both EPT ratio and ESB index, site 8 appeared to be the highest with 44.44% and 72 marks respectively, while the sites 4 and 9 showed relatively lower rates and indices. According to the results of evaluation, site 8 needs to be designated as the highest protection area while the sites 4 and 9 may be designated as target areas for preferential improvement. According to the analysis of fish community, the dominant species was Zacco teminchkii(333 inds.: 36.80%), and the dominant index was the lowest(0.24) and diversity index was the highest(1.81) at site 8, which therefore represents a stable freshwater fish community. In this survey, six Korean endemic species were identified: Ephemera separigata, Neoperla coreensis, Rhodeus uyekii, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, and Iksookimia koreensis. Also, three species belonging to the management of exportable group(Davidius lunatus, E. separigara, N. coreenis) were observed. Two habitat specific species: Thraulus grandis and Anguilla marmorata, were found for the first time in Gochang area and marked on the Korean distribution map through discussion.

  • Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) is a method that has been frequently used to survey the microbial diversity of environmental samples and to monitor changes in microbial communities. T-RFLP is a highly sensitive and reproducible procedure that combines a PCR with a labeled primer, restriction digestion of the amplified DNA, and separation of the terminal restriction fragment (T-RF). The reliable identification of T-RF requires the information of nucleotide sequences as well as the size of T-RF. However, it is difficult to obtain the information of nucleotide sequences because the T-RFs are fragmented and lack a priming site of 3'-end for efficient cloning and sequence analysis. Here, we improved on the T-RFLP method in order to analyze the nucleotide sequences of the distinct T-RFs. The first method is to selectively amplify the portion of T-RF ligated with specific oligonucleotide adapters. In the second method, the termini of T-RFs were tailed with deoxynucleotides using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) and amplified by a second round of PCR. The major T-RFs generated from reference strains and from T-RFLP profiles of activated sludge samples were efficiently isolated and identified by using two modified T-RFLP methods. These methods are less time consuming and labor-intensive when compared with other methods. The T-RFLP method using TdT has the advantages of being a simple process and having no limit of restriction enzymes. Our results suggest that these methods could be useful tools for the taxonomic interpretation of T-RFs.

  • This study aimed to analyze health promotion villages from the perspective of therapeutic architecture, and to provide basic information for planning relevant health facilities. On the basis of a review of previous literature, the characteristics of therapeutic architecture were classified into eight categories: safety, comfort, sociality, autonomy, openness, diversity, privacy, and natural environment. Field study and observation were performed in four health promotion villages that conduct programs for lifestyle improvement, physical fitness, and treatment; these villages were also considered to have a healthy residential environment. The researcher and three assistants visited the facilities and checked utilization of space through interviews with the staff and guided tours. Basic information about the subject facilities, such as the purpose of establishment, was gathered from websites before visits. Two of the villages examined in this study had a traditional Korean wooden structure, while the other two were reinforced concrete and masonry block structures. All the facilities emphasized the use of environmentally friendly material and harmony with nature. Each site was divided into the following areas: office, residence, health/treatment, public/rest, and outdoor. The safety standards of the healing architecture were not completely satisfactory at all facilities. In particular, it was found that they lacked adequate universal design equipment. However, the healing characteristics of autonomy and diversity were strong. With regard to autonomy, the facilities allowed visitors to select indoor-outdoor moving lines and the use of front- and backyards constructed on slopes. In addition, they were equipped with many entries, staircases, void, terraces, and crossroads. The architecture was aesthetically designed using feng shui symbolism, and visitors found the scenes depicted in various spaces in the villages to be stimulating. Besides, the facilities were constructed using natural materials, had a natural indoor environment, and provided a sense of spaciousness and flexibility.

  • Taxonomic identification of phytoplankton has been a difficult task, even for the experienced taxonomist. Many non-descript, yet abundant, phytoplanktons do exist without distinguishing features which cause difficulties in morphological identification. Using PCR(polymerase chain reaction)-DGGE(denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis)method, which is known to be a powerfulfingerprinting technique to analyze diversity and dynamics of microbial populations, this study aimed to find the way to overcome the limitation of morphological identification. As a result, a total of 46 bands from samples in five lakes were detected in September and 27 bands in November. Fingerprinting results showed convenient and comparative analyses among each sampling site. In this study, PCR-DGGE method was used to figure out diversity and dynamics of plankton community in the lakes of North-Han River system. Also, the possibility of DGGE technique as an identification tool for phytoplankton was estimated.
