Fabrication of Fiber-Reinforced Composites by High Pressure Self-Combustion Sintering Method (고압 자전연소 소결법을 이용한 섬유강화 복합체의 제조)

  • Dense composites of titanium matrix and Al2O3 matrix with reinforcements of carbon or titanium carbide fibers were successfully fabricated by high-pressure self-combustion sintering method or combustion reacton under 30 MPa of uniaxial pressure with an aid of external heating in vaccum. It was found that the fibers were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and aligned in a phase perpendicular to the pressure axis. As a moel ratio of Ti/C or reaction time increased, the density of Ti-matrix composite increased Micro pores around fibers could be removed by using clean carbon fibers without sizing agent on their surface. The evolution of carbide fibers from carbon fibers was observed. The composition of the various phases around fibers were analyzed.

  • In this studies, variation of the sintering temperature with a single round type piezoelectric actuator of PZT 401 powder [UPI CO.] were fabricated. The piezoelectric properties were investigated as specimens with sintering temperature $1000^{\circ}C,\;1100^{\circ}C,\;1200^{\circ}C,\;1270^{\circ}C,\;1300^{\circ}C$. The strain was measured with respect to the variation of the electric field(500V-1000V), time, temperature($18^{\circ}C-40^{\circ}C$) and humidity(35%-93%).

Effects of Grain-Size Distribution on the Breakdown Voltage in ZnO Varistors (입도분포가 ZnO 바리스터의 임계전압에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of grain size distribution on the breakdown voltage of ZnO varistors were investigated in the ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3 and ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3-Cr2O3 systems, respectively. The grain size was increased with increasing sintering temperature maintaining lognormal distribution in both systems. The width of grain size distribution of ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3 system was narrower than that of ZnO-Bi2O3-CoO-Sb2O3 system. The breakdown voltage(Vb) was decreased by increasing sintering temperature(1000~135$0^{\circ}C$) and sintering time(0.5~5hr), due to the enhancement of ZnO grain growth. The current path of the ZnO varistor was dependent on the distribution of the largest grains (chains of long grains) between the electrodes.

  • Dimensional accuracy is one of the most important issues in the production of sintered parts. The iron-copper-carbon system is commonly used alloys in sintered structural parts production. The dimensional control of these alloys, however, is not easy because of their complex sintering behavior. This study is an effort to clarify the influence of common factors on dimensional change of Fe-Cu-C sintered structural parts. We determined the effect of such various parameters as chemical composition, particle diameter, compact density, sintering temperature and sintering time on dimensional changes. Consequently, we obtained a useful formula to predict the final dimension in function of these parameters. The effect of typical impurities in copper powder on the dimensional change of sintered parts has also been described.

  • Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes fabricated by PIT process are used to make the power transmission cable, motor, fault current limiter, transformer etc. But some problems are still remained as like bubbling, sausaging to got the high Jc. In this study. we carried out the experiment to prevent bubbling in the HTS tape. The bubbling mainly occurred when HTS tape was heat-treating. Therefore, additional vacuum annealing at 400 ~ $600^{\circ}C$and slowly ramp-up sintering method were used to decrease the bubbling. slowly ramp-up sintering was more effective to decrease the bubbling than the vacuum annealing, but Jc was also decreased after heat treatment. Optimum ramp-up sintering schedule was searched to get the high critical current and prevent bubbling at same time.

  • The properties of Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Super-conductors prepared by solidstate reaction have been studied. Zero resistance was attained at l03K for the sample sintered 845[$^{\circ}C$]for 264hours and it was depended upon sintering conditions. From XRD data low Tc phase and high Tc phase were observed and the volume fraction of high Tc phase increased with increase in sintering period. The grain size increased with increase in sintering temperature and time.

  • A new type of low voltage driven SrTiO3 varistor was investigated. $SrTi3_3$ sintered with CuO-SiO2 additions, the sintering temperature was reduced to 1250-1300C. With the sintering additives, the semiconducting SrTi03 was able to fabricate single time sintering in reducing atmosphere(95% N2 + 5% H2), The non-linear coefficient value was 10.3 and the operating voltage was about 7 V.

A Study on Silicon Nitride Based Ceramic Cutting Tool Materials

  • The silicon nitride based ceramic cutting tool materials have been fabricated by gas pressure sintering (GPS) or hot pressing (HP). Their mechanical properties were measured and the effect of the fabrication variables on the properties were examined. Also, effect of adding TiN or TiC particulates on the mechanical properties of the silicon nitride ceramics were investigated. Ceramic cutting tools (ISO 120408) were made of the sintered bodies. Cutting performance test were performed on either conventional or NC lathe. The workpieces were grey cast iron, hardened alloy steel (AISI 4140, HRc>60) and Ni-based superalloy (Inconel 718). The results showed that fabrication variables, namely, sintering temperature and time, exerted a strong influence on the microstincture and mechanical properties of the sintered body, which, however, did not make much difference in wear resistance of the tools. High hardness of the tool containing TiC particulates exhibited good cutting performance. Extensive crater wear was observed on both monolithic and TiN-containing silicon nitride tools after cutting the hardened alloy steel. Inconel 718 was extremely difficult to cut by the current cutting tools.

  • A radically new approach to the in situ synthesis of the consituent phases of a composite structure has enabled the production of a new WC/Co materials with an ultrafine microstructure. The process for synthesizing nanophase WC/Co powders consists of spray drying from solution to form a homogeneous precursor powder, and thermochemical conversion of the precursor powder to the nanophase WC/Co powder. Near theoretical density of pure nanophase WC-10 wt%Co has been obtained in only 30 sec at 140$0^{\circ}C$. But WC particles were grown up very rapidly with longer sintering time to get full density. To overcome coarsening of WC particle during sintering, VC, TaC and VC/TaC were used as the grain growth inhibitor with different amount respectively. VC/TaC doped WC-10 wt%Co was shown superior hardness and TRS and microstructure was maintained ultrafine scale (average WC size is less than 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$).

  • In this paper, a state-space model of the burnthrough point control system of an industrial sintering process is derived. The model is then used in designing a self-tuning controller which consists of the receding horizon control law and a least-squares prediction algorithm with covariance resetting. By applying this controller to POSCO IV sintering process, satisfactory experimental results have been obtained. This paper presents some of these real-time experimental results and analyzes the control performance through productivity, operation indices, quality, sintered material composition, etc. From these experimental results and simulation results, the validity of the model can be observed. Moreover, the properties of the controller, e.g. stability, steady-state error, are shown based on the model.
