  • The electrical resistivity of sinter dusts generated from the steel industry and coal fly ash from the coal power plant has been investigated using the high voltage conductivity cell based on JIS B 9915 as a function of temperature and water content. Dust characterization such as the chemical composition, size distribution, atomic concentration, and surface structure has been conducted. Major constituents of sinter dusts were Fe$_2$O$_3$(40∼74.5%), CaO (6.4∼8.2%), SiO$_2$(4.1∼6.0%), and unburned carbon (7.0∼14.7%), while the coal fly ash consisted of mainly SiO$_2$(51.4%), Al$_2$O$_3$(24.1%), and Fe$_2$O$_3$(10.5%). Size distributions of the sinter dusts were bi-modal in shape and the mass median diameters (MMD) were in the range of 24.7∼137㎛, whereas the coal fly ash also displayed bi-modal distribution and the MMD of the coal fly ash was 35.71㎛. Factors affecting resistivity of dusts were chemical composition, moisture content, particle size, gas temperature, and surface structure of dust. The resistivity of sinter dusts was so high as 10(sup)15 ohm$.$cm at 150$\^{C}$ that sinter dust would not precipitate well. The resistivity of the coal fly ash was measured 1012 ohm$.$cm at about 150$\^{C}$. Increased water contents of the ambient air lowered the dust resistivity because current conduction was more activated for absorption of water vapor on the surface layer of the dust.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate Electrostatic Precipitator's(ESP) performance enhancement and removal efficiency of fine particle according to (NH4)2SO4injection rate. The following conclusions are derived from the these test results : 1) For plant condition cases, according to the variation of concentration agent [(NH4)2SO4]-10ppm, when inlet dust loading was 2g/m2. And when Inlet dust loading was 3g/m", that was increased to 98 19% 99.16% 99.23%, 99.58%, 2) It Is seen from thins experiments that the increasing 30ppm concentration of (NH4)2SO4 increase the collection efficiency and fine particle omission control.

  • Normal sintering process of producing porous ceramics is not to sinter perfectly, i.e., stop sintering in middle-process. Our porous ceramic materials are a product of complete sintering. For example if one want to make a porous carborundum, raw carborundum powder is sintered at either lower temperatures than normal sintering temperature or shorter sintering periods than normal sintering time to obtain incompletely sintered materials, i.e., porous carborundum. This implies normally sintered porous ceramic materials can mot be used in high vacuum conditions due to dust coming out from uncompleted sintering. We could produce completely sintered porous ceramic materials. For example, we can produce porous carborundum material by using carborundum particles bonded by glassy material. The properties of this material are similar to carborundum. We could make quasi-zero thermal expansion porous material by using carborundum and particles of negative thermal expansion materials bonded by the glassy material. We apply to sinter them also by microwave to sinter quickly. We also use HIP process to introduce closed pores. We could sinter them in large size to produce $2.5m{\times}2.5m$ ceramic plate to use as a precision plate for flat display industries. This flat ceramic plate is the world largest artificial ceramic plate. Precision plates are basic importance to any advanced electronic industries. The produced precision plate has lower density, lower thermal expansivity, higher or similar damping properties added extra properties such as vacuum vise, air sliding capacity. These plates are highly recommended to use in flat display industries. We could produce also cylindrical porous ceramics materials, which can applied to precision roller for polymer film precision motion for also electronic industries.

  • Iron-bearing dust which stems from steelworks were pelletized and bonded with portland cement in order to attempt to use for blast iurnace burdens. The characterist~cs of cold bonded dust pellet were investigated. It was found that the compression strength of cold bonded pellet contaning portland cement of 10 wt.% reached above 150kg/p by proper curing treatment. Direcl contad of carbon with iron oxides seems to greately enhance a reduction reaction and herewxth increased chances to lorn pores at high temperature environment. Tumbler strength, RDI, and swelling of cold bonded pellet were similiar to and/or better than those of iron ore sinter and fired pellet.

  • Fluorspar has been essential flux in steelmaking process. The main effects of fluorspar addition are lowering of the viscosity and melting temperature of slag. In recent years, due to the increasing price and environmental problem of fluorspar, various types of fluorspar substitute have been investigated. In this study, iron oxide by-products such as sinter dust, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) sludge and mill scale were developed as a substitute in terms of waste recycling. Several plant trials were carried out by addition of briquetted substitutes of $4{\sim}6$ kg/ton to compare with the fluorspar of $0.7{\sim}1$ kg/ton. The substitutes showed a similar behavior of slag formation, phosphorus removal and MgO saturation content.
