Efficient weight initialization method in multi-layer perceptrons

  • Back-propagation is the most widely used algorithm for supervised learning in multi-layer feed-forward networks. However, back-propagation is very slow in convergence. In this paper, a new weight initialization method, called rough map initialization, in multi-layer perceptrons is proposed. To overcome the long convergence time, possibly due to the random initialization of the weights of the existing multi-layer perceptrons, the rough map initialization method initialize weights by utilizing relationship of input-output features with singular value decomposition technique. The results of this initialization procedure are compared to random initialization procedure in encoder problems and xor problems.

An application of wavelet transform toward noisy NMR peak suppression

  • A shift-averaged Haar wavelet transform was introduced as a new and excellent tool to distinguish real peaks from the noise contaminated NMR signals. It is based on Haar wavelet transform and translation-invariant denoising process. Donoho's universal threshold was newly introduced to the shift-averaged Haar wavelet transform for the purpose of automated noise suppression, and was quantitatively compared with the conventional uniform threshold method in terms or threshold and signal to noise ratio (SNR). New algorithm was combined with a routine to suppress a large solvent peak by singular value decomposition (SVD). Combined algorithm was applied to the real spectrum that containing large solvent peak.

Curvature and Histogram of oriented Gradients based 3D Face Recognition using Linear Discriminant Analysis

  • This article describes 3 dimensional (3D) face recognition system using histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) based on face curvature. The surface curvatures in the face contain the most important personal feature information. In this paper, 3D face images are recognized by the face components: cheek, eyes, mouth, and nose. For the proposed approach, the first step uses the face curvatures which present the facial features for 3D face images, after normalization using the singular value decomposition (SVD). Fisherface method is then applied to each component curvature face. The reason for adapting the Fisherface method maintains the surface attribute for the face curvature, even though it can generate reduced image dimension. And histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) descriptor is one of the state-of-art methods which have been shown to significantly outperform the existing feature set for several objects detection and recognition. In the last step, the linear discriminant analysis is explained for each component. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach leads to higher detection accuracy rate than other methods.

  • The problem of estimating the frequencies of multiple sinusoids from noisy measurements by using the modified linear prediction methods - Modified Forward-Backward Linear Prediction(MFBLP) and Model Reduction(MR) methods is addressed in this paper. The MFBLP and MR methods are derived by singular value decomposition and approximation of linear system. respectively. Monte Carlo simulations are done and the performances compared with linear prediction and forward-backward linear prediction. Simulations show a great promise for MFBLP and MR.

  • 웹 상의 많은 정보들 속에서 사용자가 원하는 정보를 찾아내는 일은 쉽지 않다. 사용자가 의도하는 양질의 정보 제공을 위해 특정 영역과 관련한 정보 제공 시스템이 .개발되고 있다. 이전 시스템은 특정 영역 관련 지식베이스를 토대로 하여 웹 문서를 수집해 놓고, 사용자에게 정보를 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 전문 사이트 내에 문서간의 유사성을 토대로 하여 동물 영역에 대한 효과적인 문서 클러스타링(clustering)에 관해 실험하였다. 기존의 방법에서는 문서의 분류나 질의어와 관련한 문서 선택이나 순위 결정이 주로 텀(term)을 바탕으로 하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 각 문서 내의 텀 뿐만 아니라 HTML 태그(tag), 지식베이스에 WordNet의 계층구조를 적용한 data를 활용하고, SVD(Singular Value Decomposition)를 사용하여 문서간의 관계를 밝혀내어 문서 분류 및 수집에 이용하였다. 특정 영역의 전문 문서를 많이 제공하는 사이트에 적용하여 좋은 결과를 볼 수 있었다.

A penny-shaped interfacial crack between piezoelectric layer and elastic half-space

  • An interfacial penny-shaped crack between piezoelectric layer and elastic half-space subjected to mechanical and electric loads is investigated. Using Hankel transform technique, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations. The integral equations are further reduced to a system of algebraic equations with the aid of Jacobi polynomials. The stress intensity factor and energy release rate are determined. Numerical results reveal the effects of electric loadings and material parameters of composite on crack propagation and growth. The results seem useful for design of the piezoelectric composite structures and devices of high performance.

  • It is well known that the Boyd's theorem states the relation between the imaginary eigenvalues of discriminant H of Riccati equation (A, R, Q) and the singular value of transfer function, but it is only available for R .geq. 0 and Q .geq. 0. In this paper, we extend Boyd's theorem for two case, that is, R is symmetric, Q is sign definite, and R is sign definite, Q is symmetric. We give under the condition that there is a real symmetric solution of Riccati equation the relation between H has imaginary eigenvalue and the maximum eigenvalue of transfer functoin. Finally, we give a necessary and sufficient condition to determine whether H has imaginary eigenvalue under some conditions.

  • This paper presents how it is effective to use many features for improving the speed and the accuracy of the visual servo systems. Some rank conditions which relate the image Jacobian and the control performance are derived. It is also proven that the accuracy is improved by increasing the number of features. Effectiveness of the redundant features is evaluated by the smallest singular value of the image Jacobian which is closely related to the accuracy with respect to the world coordinate system. Usefulness of the redundant features is verified by the real time experiments on a Dual-Arm Robot manipulator made in Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd

  • In this paper, a new method to design sliding surfaces using eigenstructure assignment is proposed. Most conventional methods for constructing the surfaces require special form like canonical or regular canonical form of system matrices. But the proposed method can be applied to arbitrary system matrices. Futhermore, the surface matrix, C can be decided for the matrix multiplication, CB to have a designated form. SVD is used to decide desirable eigenvectors explicitly. To verify the proposed algorithm, a sliding mode controller for a multivariable system with matched uncertainty is constructed. The controller is designed to guarantee minimum approach velocity to the sliding surface.

가속도센서를 이용한 운전패턴 인식기법 (Recognition of Driving Patterns Using Accelerometers)

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm to detect aggressive driving status by analysing six kinds of driving patterns, which was achieved by comparing for the feature vectors using mahalanobis distance. The first step is to construct feature matrix of $6{\times}2$ size using frequency response of the time-series accelerometer data. Singular value decomposition makes it possible to find the dominant eigenvalue and its corresponding eigenvector. We use the eigenvector as the feature vector of the driving pattern. We conducted real experiments using three drivers to see the effects of recognition. Although there exists differences from individual drivers, we showed that driving patterns can be recognized with about 80% accuracy. Further research topics will include the development of aggressive driving warning system by improving the proposed technique and combining with post-processing of accelerometer signals.
