  • In this research, the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane was tested as a simply and beginning attempt to overcome membrane fouling because CNTs importantly affect the transport of natural organic matter (NOM). Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as the representative of NOM was selected and its sorption results with single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and oxidized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) were obtained through the batch experiment. SRFA sorption isotherms had a strong nonlinearity and its sorption capacity followed the order O-MWCNT < MWCNT < SWCNT. The adsorbed mass of SRFA on each CNT decreased as a function of pH due to their charge repulsion. For the CNT-PVDF membrane filtration experiments, the suspended CNT solution (10 mg/40 mL) was incorporated into $0.45{\mu}m$-PVDF membrane and 5 mg/L of SRFA solution was monitored using UV detector connected with high pressure pump after passing through CNT-PVDF membrane. The SRFA removal efficiency by MWCNT-PVDF membrane was the strongest among other modified membranes. This suggests that the CNT modified microfiltration (MF) membrane might effectively and selectively apply to treat the contaminated water including organic compounds in the presence of NOM.

  • A diode structure of field emission lamps based upon carbon-nanotube is studied. The single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) were produced by arc discharge method. We made the 1-inch diode type flat lamp using CNTs. We applied anode voltage gradually to refine the field emission behavior of emitter in dynamic vacuum system to study the emission current. the brightness and efficiency, etc. The field emission properties was estimated by varying gaps between the cathode and anode, contents of the glass frit. The good luminous efficiency is showed in the gap $900{\mu}m$, $1200{\mu}m$ and contents of the proper glass frit. For the upper conditions, the luminous efficiencies were respectively 23.30, 11.12 1m/W.

  • A combined theoretical and numerical study is conducted to design a slit nozzle for large-area liquid coating. The objectives are to guarantee the uniformity in the injected flow and to provide the capability of explicit control of flow rate. The woking fluid is a dilute aqueous solution containing single-walled carbon nanotubes and its low viscosity and the presence of dispersed materials pose technical hurdles. A theoretical analysis leads to a guideline for the geometric design of a slit nozzle. The CFD-based numerical experiment is employed as a verification tool. A new flow passage unit, connected to the nozzle chamber, is proposed to permit the control of flow rate by using the commodity pressurizer. The numerical results confirm the feasibility of this idea. The optimal geometry of internal structure of the nozzle has been searched for numerically and the related issues are discussed.

  • In this study, We had surface-treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for improving hydrogen storage capacity. The SWNTs were treated by heat treatment, acid treatment and fluorinated at various temperatures. The SWNTs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and TEM and estimated hydrogen storage capacities at 303K. As shown Raman spectra and TEM images, the structure of fluorinated SWNTs were stable at 423K but changed to the MWNTs-like structure or onion structure over 523K. Hydrogen storage capacity of SWNTs fluorinated at 423K was remarkably increased 2.6 times than that of pristine SWNTs. For SWNTs fluorinated at 573K, the amount of hydrogen adsorbed wasn't increased compared with SWNTs fluorinated at 423K. Therefore, high hydrogen storage capacity of SWNTs could be archived by fluorinated condition at 423K, which was not changed SWNT structure.

  • Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully functionalizedon the surfaces of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by dendrimer-mediated synthesis. The hydrogen sensing properties of the Pd NPs functionalized SWNTs were investigated. Pd NPs-dendrimer-SWNTs sensors show much better speedsand superior recovery rates but lower sensitivity compared to Pd NPs-functionalized SWNTs directly fabricated due to the existence of dendrimers. Pyrolysis of the dendrimers by heat treatment resulted in a fast response time and high sensitivity owing to the reduced length of the dendrimers. These results demonstrate that the heat treatment of dendrimers in Pd NPs-dendrimer-SWNTs sensors can enable significant electrical conductance modulation upon exposure to extremely low concentrations (10 ppm) of hydrogen gas ($H_2$) in air.

  • A femtosecond-laser inscribed Yb:YAG surface channel waveguide (WG) laser with single-walled carbon nanotubes deposited on the top surface of the WG was passively Q-switched by evanescent field interaction. Q-switched operation of the 14-mm-long compact Yb:YAG WG laser was achieved near 1031 nm with two different pumping schemes (single- and double-pass pumping) with an output coupling transmission of 91%. The Q-switched pulse characteristics depending on the absorbed pump power were investigated for both pumping geometries and analyzed in detail based on theoretical modeling. The best performances (energy/pulse duration) for each configuration were 204.4 nJ/75 ns at a repetition rate of 1.87 MHz, and 201.1 nJ/81 ns at 1.75 MHz for single- and double-pass pumping, respectively.

  • This study aimed to investigate the impact of enhancing the electrode conductivity and mitigating the production of hydrogen peroxide - a by-product arising from lactate oxidation - on the performance of lactate electrodes. The electrical conductivity of the electrode was improved by modifying the surface of carbon paper with single-walled carbon nanotubes. Catalase was introduced to effectively eliminate the hydrogen peroxide produced during the lactate oxidation reaction. The carbon paper electrode, with simultaneous immobilization of both lactate oxidase and catalase, yielded a current 1.7 times greater than the electrode where only lactate oxidase was immobilized. The electrode in which lactate oxidase and catalase were co-immobilized on the surface of carbon paper modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes, produced a current of 171 µA, which was more than twice as much current as the carbon paper with only lactate oxidase immobilized. The optimized electrode showed a linear response up to lactate concentration of 20 mM, confirming that it can be used as a sensor electrode.

  • Bundles of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) were grown using catalytic layer supported by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Amine-SAMs were introduced on SiO2/Si substrate (SAMs/Si) there then iron nanoclusters solution was dropped on it through spin-coating (Fe/SAMs/Si). This catalytic template was used to grow CNTs and the synthesized carbon material was confirmed the bundles of dense SWCNTs with incorporation of ca.1% nitrogen. The SAMs has played an active role to support catalytic layer and also acted as a source of N-dope onto SWCNTs in CVD.

  • Dynamic analysis of an embedded single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) traversed by a moving nanoparticle, which is modeled as a moving load, is investigated in this study based on the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory, including transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using the principle of virtual displacement. The Galerkin method and the direct integration method of Newmark are employed to find the dynamic response of the SWCNT. A detailed parametric study is conducted to study the influences of the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio of the SWCNT, elastic medium constant and the moving load velocity on the dynamic responses of SWCNT. For comparison purpose, free vibration frequencies of the SWCNT are obtained and compared with a previously published study. Good agreement is observed. The results show that the above mentioned effects play an important role on the dynamic behaviour of the SWCNT.
