The laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is described, by which the growth of single-phase GaN epitaxy is achieved at lower temperatures. Trimethylgallium (TMG) and ammonia are used as source gases to deposit the epitaxial films of GaN under the irradiation of ArF excimer laser (193 nm). The as-grown deposits are obtained on c-face sapphire surface near 700$^{\circ}$C, which is substantially reduced, relative to the temperatures in conventional thermolytic processes. To overcome the lattice mismatch between c-face sapphire and GaN ad-layer, aluminum nitride(AlN) is predeposited as buffer layer prior to the deposition of GaN. The gas phase interaction is monitored by means of quadrupole mass analyzer (QMA). The stoichiometric deposition is ascertained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The GaN deposits thus obtained are characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and van der Pauw method.

Traces of nine elements, gold, arsenic, cobalt, chromium, copper, europium, hafnium, sodium and antimony in commercially available silicon crystals were determined by the instrumental neutron activation analysis using the single comparator method. The values of the concentrations of these elements in both single and polycrystals were found to decrease significantly to a low limiting level by simply washing and etching surface contaminants having been introduced during various steps of sample preparation and irradiation. However, the chromium levels in polycrystals were not easily decreased, these depending upon the cutting tools employed. The Sb-doped content in each semiconductor has been compared with the associated quantities such as the concentration and the conductivity range given by the sample donor. Uncertainty in the sodium analysis due to the fission neutron reaction by silicon itself was discussed.
We performed this study to understand the effect of a single-crystalline anode on the mechanical properties of as-deposited films during electrochemical deposition. We used a (111) single- crystalline Cu plate as an anode, and Si substrates with Cr/Au conductive seed layers were prepared for the cathode. Electrodeposition was performed with a standard 3-electrode system in copper sulfate electrolyte. Interestingly, the grain boundaries of the as-deposited Cu thin films using single-crystalline Cu anode were not distinct; this is in contrast to the easily recognizable grain boundaries of the Cu thin films that were formed using a poly-crystalline Cu anode. Tensile testing was performed to obtain the mechanical properties of the Cu thin films. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of the Cu thin films fabricated using the (111) single-crystalline Cu anode were found to have increased by approximately 52 % and 37 %, respectively, compared with those values of the Cu thin films fabricated using apoly-crystalline Cu anode. We applied ultrasonic irradiation during electrodeposition to disturb the uniform stream; we then observed no single-crystalline anode effect. Consequently, it is presumed that the single-crystalline Cu anode can induce a directional/uniform stream of ions in the electrolyte that can create films with smeared grain boundaries, which boundaries strongly affect the mechanical properties of the electrodeposited Cu films.

Photochemical reactions of aromatic carbonyl compounds with silyl ketene acetals have been explored. Irradiation of acetonitrile or benzene solutions containing aryl aldehydes or ketones in the presence of silyl ketene acetals is observed to promo te formation of ${\beta}-hydroxyester$, 2,2-dioxyoxetane and 3,3-dioxyoxetane products. The ratios of these photoproducts, which arise by competitive single electron transfer (SET) and classical Paterno-Buchi mechanistic pathways, is found to be dependent on the degree of methyl-substitution on the vinyl moieties of the ketene acetals in a manner which reflects expected alkyl substituent effects on the oxidation potentials of these electron rich donors. An analysis of the product distribution arising by irradiation of a solution containing butyrophenone (6) and the silyl ketene acetal 9, derived from methyl isobutyrate, provides an estimate of the rate constants for the competitive Norrish type Ⅱ, SET and Paterno-Buchi processes occuring. Finally, sequences involving silyl ketene acetal-aryl aldehyde or ketone photoaddition followed by 2,2-dioxyoxetane hydrolysis represent useful procedures for Claisen-condensation type, ${\beta}-hydroxyester$ synthesis.
AgInCd alloy is widely used as neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. However, the AgInCd control rods may fail during service due to the irradiation swelling. In the present study, a calculational method is proposed to calculate the composition change of the AgInCd absorber. Calculated results show that neutron fluence has significant impact on the chemical compositions. Ag and In contents gradually decrease while Cd and Sn conversely increases from the center to the rim of AgInCd absorber due to the depression of neutron flux. The composition change at the surface is higher almost two times than that at the center. Based on the calculated compositions, six simulated AgInCdSn alloys were prepared and examined. With the increase of Cd and Sn, the simulated AgInCdSn alloys transform from a single fcc phase into the mixed fcc and hcp phases, and finally into the single hcp phase. The atomic volume of the hcp phase is obviously larger than the fcc phase. The fcc-hcp transformation results in considerable volume swelling of the AgInCd absorber. Moreover, the lattice parameters of the fcc and hcp phases gradually increase with Cd and Sn contents, which also can induce small volume swelling.
Nonthermal plasma hybridized with photocatalysts is proven to be an effective tool to degrade toxic organics in wastewater. In this study, a specially designed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system combined with photocatalysts was applied to decompose pestiticides such as dichlorovos, carbofuran and methidathon, which are frequently used in the golf courses and the orange plantations. The degradations of the pesticides in single and coupled systems were evaluated. The single system was used with ozone plasma which consisted of electrons, radicals, ions produced by oxygen gas and air, with and without ultra-violet (UV) irradiation, respectively. The coupled systems utilized the air-derived ozone plasma combined with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and graphite oxide photocatalyst activated by UV. The graphite oxide was synthesized by a modified Hummer's method and characterized using FTIR spectrometer. It was elucidated that the plasma reaction with graphite oxide (0.01 g/L) brought about almost 100% of degradation degrees for dichlorovos and carbofuran in 60 min, as compared with the performances showed by no catalyst condition. The photocatalyst-hybridized plasma in the presence of UV irradiation was proven to be an effective alternative for degrading pesticides.
PURPOSE. This study was aimed to evaluate effect of the desensitizing pretreatments on the micro-tensile bond strengths (${\mu}TBS$) to eroded dentin and sound dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty-two extracted molars were prepared to form a flat dentin surface, and then they were divided into two groups. Group I was stored in distilled water while group II was subjected to a pH cycling. Each group was then subdivided into three subgroups according to desensitizing pretreatment used: a) pretreatment with desensitizer (Gluma); b) pretreatment with $CO_2$ Laser (Ultra Dream Pluse); c) without any pretreatment. All prepared surfaces were bonded with Single Bond 2 and built up with resin composite (Filtek Z250). The micro-tensile bond test was performed. Fracture modes were evaluated by stereomicroscopy. Pretreated surfaces and bonded interfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data obtained was analyzed by two-way ANOVA (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. For both sound and eroded dentin, samples treated with desensitizer showed the greatest ${\mu}TBS$, followed by samples without any treatment. And samples treated with $CO_2$ laser showed the lowest ${\mu}TBS$. SEM study indicated that teeth with eroded dentin appeared prone to debonding, as demonstrated by existence of large gaps between adhesive layers and dentin. CONCLUSION. Pretreatment with Gluma increased the ${\mu}TBS$ of Single Bond 2 for eroded and sound teeth. $CO_2$ laser irradiation weakened bond performance for sound teeth but had no effect on eroded teeth.

Skin is continuously exposed to external stimuli including ultraviolet radiation, which is a major cause of skin photoaging. According to recent discoveries, UVA with a lower energy but deep-penetrating properties, compared to UVB, is likely to play a major part in causing skin photoaging. The clinical and histochemical changes of photoaging are well characterized, but the biochemical mechanisms are poorly understood partly due to the lack of suitable experimental systems. In this work, three-dimensional, reconstituted skin culture models were prepared. After certain period of maturation, the equivalent models were shown to be similar in structure and biochemical characteristics to normal skin. Mature dermal and skin equivalent models were exposed to sub-lethal doses of UVA, and the effects of UVA relevant to dermal photoaging were monitored, including the production of elastin, collagen, collagenase(MMP-1), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1). Interestingly, dermal and skin equivalents reacted differently to acute and chronic exposure to UVA. Elastin production was increased as soon as one week after commencing UVA irradiation by chronic exposure, although a single exposure failed to do so. This early response could be an important advantage of equivalent models in studying elastosis in photoaged skin. Collagenase activity was increased by acute UVA irradiation, but returned to control levels after repeated exposure. On the other hand, collagen biosynthesis, which was increased by a single exposure, decreased slightly during 5 weeks of prolonged UVA exposure. Collagenase has been thought to be responsible for collagen degeneration in dermal photoaging. However, according to the results obtained in this study, elevated collagenase activity is not likely to be responsible for the degeneration of collagen in dermal photoagig, while reduced production of collagen may be the main reason. It can be concluded that reconstituted skin culture models can serve as useful experimental tools for the study of skin photoaging. These culture models are relatively simple to construct, easy to handle, and are reproducible Moreover the changes of dermal photoaging can be observed within 1-4 weeks of exposure to ultraviolet light compared to 4 months to 2 years for human or animal studies. These models will be useful for biochemical and mechanistic studies in a large number of fields including dermatology, toxicology, and pharmacology.

A calculation is presented of air-scattered gamma rays using the modified single-scattering approximation. The air-scattered tissue dose rates are calculated for a general purpose taking into account (a) the buildup and exponential attenuation, (b) the energy spectrum at the position of question and (c) the geometrical scattering volume in three dimensions. These calculations have been further modified to render them applicable to a typical field irradiation facility which is surrounded by a shield wall and in which the source is fitted with a beam collimating device. The results of the calculation include the energy spectra, angular distribution and tissue does rates at source-receiver separation distances of from 35m to 300m. The comparison shows that the present method developed may be generally adequate for the gamma-ray air-scattering problems in field irradiation facilities if energy and angular distribution at the shield are unimportant.

Vacancy defects in graphene can be created by electron or ion irradiation and those induce ripples which can change the electronic properties of graphene. Recently, the formation of defect structures such as vacancy defects and non-hexagonal rings has been reported in the high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) of reduced graphene oxide [1]. In those HR-TEM images, it is noticed that the dislocations with pentagon-heptagon (5-7) pairs are formed and diffuses. Interestingly, it is also observed that two 5-7 pairs are separated and diffuse far away from each other. The separation of 5-7 pairs has been known to be due to their self-diffusion. However, from our tight-binding molecular dynamics simulation, it is found that the separation of 5-7 pairs is due to the diffusion of single vacancy defects and coalescence with 5-7 pairs. The diffusion and coalescence of single vacancy defects is too fast to be observed even in HR-TEM. We also implemented Van der Waals interaction in our tight-binding carbon model to describe correctly bi-layer and multi-layer graphene. The compressibility of graphite along c-axis in our tight-binding calculation is found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. We also discuss the difference between single layer and bi-layer graphene about vacancy diffusion and reconstruction.
