  • In this paper, prototype high-power-factor single-stage electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps is designed and implemented. A new low cost single stage high power factor electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps is based on integration of two-boost converter and LC type high frequency resonant converter. A ballast is obtained by simple construction, because full bridge rectifier diode is eliminated and simple control circuit is applied. Using two boost converter operating positive and negative half cycle respectively at line frequency (60Hz), operation in discontinuous conduction mode performs high power factor. The experimental results Show the good performance as PF 0.99, $A_{THD}$ 15.4%, and CF 1.65 at Output 63.5W.W.

  • In this paper, we proposed and fabricated the single feed microstrip patch antenna with slot for S-DMB(Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting). In order to improve of frequency properties, patch size, feed length, and slot size were investigated by HFSS simulation program. The manufactured single feed microstrip patch antenna with slot showed that the measured center frequency, the minimum return loss and -10dB bandwidth were 2.64GHz, -34.67dB and 180MHz, respectively.

  • In this paper, using the newly developed GaAs Schottky beam-lead diode made by Marconi company, we have developed and evaluated the waveguide type single-ended mixer at Q-band. The various components of the mixer were separately designed and optimized using the Super-Compact software. These studies included the design of the step waveguide impedance transformer and the RF-choke filter, and the optimization of a high and low impedance for the RF-choke filter. Moreover, this RF-choke filter pattern included a section to reject the second harmonic frequency of the RF signal. Finally, this Q-band mixer with 1.4GHz/400MHz IF frequency exhibits an average conversion loss of 5.3 dB over 33-50GHz bandwidth.

  • A new 8-bit single-slope ADC using analog RAMP generator with digitally controllable dynamic range has been proposed and simulated for column level or per-pixel CMOS image sensor application. The conversion gain of ADC can he controlled easily by using frequency divider with digitally controllable diviber ratio, coarse/fine RAMP with class-AB op-amp, resistor strings, decoder, comparator, and etc. The chip area and power consumption can be decreased by simplified analog circuits and passive components. Proposed frequency divider has been implemented and verified with 0.65um, 2-poly, 2-metal standard CMOS process. And the functional verification has been simulated and accomplished in a 0.35$\mu$m standard CMOS process.

  • In this paper, the vibration of a single-wheel mobile robot is minimized by designing a filter. An AHRS (Attitude and heading reference system) sensor is used for measuring the state of the robot. The measured signals are analyzed using the FFT method to investigate the fundamental vibrational frequency with respect to the flywheel's speed of the gimbal system. The IIR notch filter is then designed to suppress the vibration at the identified frequency. After simulating the performance of the designated filter using the measured sensor data through extensive experiments, the filter is actually implemented in a single-wheel mobile robot, GYROBO. Finally, the performance of the designed filter is confirmed by performing the balancing control task of the GYROBO system.

  • This paper addresses the problem of single-channel speech separation to extract the speech signal uttered by the speaker of interest from a mixture of speech signals. We propose to apply time-frequency smoothing to the existing statistical single-channel speech separation algorithms: The soft mask and the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) algorithms. In the proposed method, we use the two smoothing later. One is the uniform mask filter whose filter length is uniform at the time-Sequency domain, and the other is the met-scale filter whose filter length is met-scaled at the time domain. In our speech separation experiments, the uniform mask filter improves speaker-to-interference ratio (SIR) by 2.1dB and 1dB for the soft mask algorithm and the MMSE algorithm, respectively, whereas the mel-scale filter achieves 1.1dB and 0.8dB for the same algorithms.

  • Dielectrophoresis has received considerable attention for separating nanotubes according to electronic types. Here we examine the effects of surface conductivity of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT), induced by ionic surfactants, on the sign of dielectrophoretic force. The crossover frequency of semiconducting SWNT increases rapidly as the conductivity ratio between the particle and medium increases, leading to an incomplete separation of ionic surfactant suspended SWNT at an electric field frequency of 10 MHz. The surface charge of SWNT is neutralized by an equimolar mixture of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimenthylammonium bromide (CTAB), resulting in negative dielectrophoresis of semiconducting species at 10 MHz. A comparative Raman spectroscopy study shows a nearly complete separation of metallic SWNT.

  • Single phase converters suffer from ripple power pulsating at twice the line frequency. The ripple power is usually absorbed by a bulky capacitor bank and/or a dedicative LC resonant link, resulting in a low power density and a high cost. An alternative solution is using a dc link active power filter (APF) to direct the pulsating power into another energy-storage component. The main dc link filter capacitor can then be reduced substantially. Based on a mainstream dc APF topology, this paper proposed a new control strategy incorporating both dual-loop control and repetitive control. The circuit parameter design is also re-examined from a control point of view. The proposed APF scheme has better control performance, and is more suited for high power applications since it works in CCM and with a low switching frequency.

  • This paper analyzes arc phenomena including the secondary arc's elongation in the Korean 765kV single transmission line (79km) between Sin-Ansung S/S and Sin-Gapyeong S/S, which will be installed in Korea in June 2006. In particular, both frequency independent and frequency dependent line models are compared to make our final decisions. As well, the significant simulation results are investigated by the EMTP program. As a result, there is no need of HSGS in the Korean 765kV single transmission line from both a practical and an economical point of view.

  • We demonstrate a frequency-resolved optical grating (FROG) device for measuring the intensity and phase versus time of several-tens-of-picoseconds laser pulses, using a thick nonlinear optical crystal. The huge pulse-front tilt generated by a holographic grating increases the temporal range of the device, which can make a single-shot measurement of laser pulses less than 100 ps in duration. To verify the measurement technique, we generate double pulses using a Michelson interferometer. The measured duration of a single pulse is about 300 fs and the measured maximum delay of two pulses is 60 ps, which implies that the proposed FROG device can measure laser pulses with maximum pulse width of about 120 ps.
