The interaction of cracks and water significantly affects the fracture mechanism of rocks. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted using sandstone samples containing a single fissure to explore the hydro-mechanical behaviors in the failure process of pre-cracked rocks. The internal crack characteristics were also analyzed using X-ray CT scanning. The results show that the confining pressure has the greatest effect on the mechanical properties (e.g., strengths, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio), followed by the fissure inclination and water pressure. At a lower fissure inclination, the confining pressure may control the type main cracks that form, and an increase in the water pressure increases the number of anti-wing cracks and the length of wing cracks and branch cracks. However, the fracture behaviors of samples with a higher fissure inclination are only slightly affected by the confining pressures and water pressures. The effect of fissure inclination on the internal crack area is reduced with the propagation from the fissure tips to the sample ends. The fissure inclination mainly affects the value of permeability but not affect the trend. The impact of pre-existing fissure on permeability is smaller than that of confining pressure and water pressure.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing osteoporosis awareness depending on the family structure in postmenopausal women aged over 50 years with osteoporosis. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study that used secondary data. Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis aged over 50 years (n= 567) from the National Health Nutrition Survey of the 5th (2010, 2011) were selected for analysis. Data were analyzed by complex sampling design multiple regression analysis. Results: Among the patients with osteoporosis, the osteoporosis awareness was very low at 29.0%, and 32.5% for single households and 28.1% for household with spouses. There were significant differences in the factors influencing osteoporosis awareness depending on the family structure. For single household, factors that influenced osteoporosis awareness included sleeping for more than 9 hours (OR, 4.32), anxiety and depression (OR, 3.21), a history of fracture (OR, 0.29), and a family history of osteoporosis (OR, 0.29). In the household with a spouse, osteoporosis awareness was highest in women in their 60 seconds (OR, 3.45), unhealthy group (OR, 2.27), and underweight group (OR, 5.31). Other factors that influenced osteoporosis awareness included pain/discomfort (OR, 2.31), smoking (OR, 7.71), and a history of fracture (OR, 0.36). Conclusion: It is necessary to improve osteoporosis awareness for effective osteoporosis management through osteoporosis screening and counseling, and continuous osteoporosis education programs.

Purpose: This study aims to compare patients in whom fixation failure occurred via cut-out (CO) or cut-through (CT) in order to determine patient factors and radiographic parameters that may be predictive of each mechanism. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study includes 18 patients with intertrochanteric (IT) hip fractures (AO/OTA classification 31A1.3) who underwent treatment using a single lag screw design intramedullary nail in whom fixation failure occurred within one year. All patients were reviewed for demographics and radiographic parameters including tip-to-apex distance (TAD), posteromedial calcar continuity, neck-shaft angle, lateral wall thickness, and others. Patients were grouped into cohorts based on the mechanism of failure, either lag screw CO or CT, and a comparison was performed. Results: No differences in demographics, injury details, fracture classifications, or radiographic parameters were observed between CO/CT cohorts. Of note, a similar rate of post-reduction TAD>25 mm (P=0.936) was observed between groups. A higher rate of DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) confirmed osteoporosis (25.0% vs. 60.0%) was observed in the CT group, but without significance. Conclusion: The mechanism of CT failure during intramedullary nail fixation of an IT fracture did not show an association with clinical data including patient demographics, reduction accuracy, or radiographic parameters. As reported in previous biomechanical studies, the main predictive factor for patients in whom early failure might occur via the CT effect mechanism may be related to bone quality; however, conduct of larger studies will be required in order to determine whether there is a difference in bone quality.
Current dental restorations present a relatively weak resistance to fracture. Owing to their unique mechanical properties, fibre-reinforced polymers are now being considered. Unidirectional or woven continuous fibres, made of glass, polyethylene, carbon or Kevlar, have been evaluated. This study focused on the use of glass fibre knitted fabrics to reinforce acrylate resins, in order to investigate the possibility to construct single crowns as well as three unit bridges. Some points affecting the final composite system were tested ; 1) static strength, with focus on the stress transfer under a occlusal contact point ; 2) modelling of a three nit bridge ; 3) fatigue strength as a posterior three unit bridge material. The study demonstrated that knitted fabric reinforcements are showing an interesting compromise between stiffness, static strength for single crown. For three unit bridge applications in the posterior arch, however knitted glass fabric reinforcements were not strong enough in fatigue An additional reinforcement in the posterior arch fixed partial denture design was recommended.
In rapidly solidified $Al_{92-x}Nd_8$(Cu,Ag)x ($0{\leq}X{\leq}10at%$) alloys, amorphous single phases were obtained in the ranges of $Oat%{\leq}X{\leq}4at%$ for Al-Nd-Cu system and $Oat%{\leq}X{\leq}6at%$ for Al-Nd-Ag system, respectively. Mesoscopic structures consisted of amorphous and crystalline phases were formed above solute ranges. It was founded that the mesoscopic structures were also formed near 1st exothermic peak on DSC curve by aging in amorphous single phase alloys. For example, amorphous $Al_{92-x}Nd_8$(Cu,Ag)x (X=2.4at%) alloys containing nanoscale Al particles and compounds, i.e., mesoscopic structure, exhibited higher tensile fracture strength(${\sigma}_f$) than those of amorphous single phase alloys with the same composition. The ${\sigma}_f$ showed a maximum value in the $V_f$ ranges of 10~15%. The reason is presumed that the nanoscale precipitates which have higher mechanical strength compared with the amorphous phase with the same composition act as an effective resistance to shear deformation of the amorphous matrix.
The single-modal Weibull model has been assessed on Tyranno ZMI Si-Zr-C-O fiber if a set of shape and scale parameters accurately reproduced the effect of the size of the diameter on strength. The tensile data of a single fiber have been divided into two expedient groups as 'small diameter' group and 'large diameter' group in deriving the parameters, which should be consistent if the Weibull model accurately reproduced the size effect. However, the derived Weibull parameters were inconsistent between the two groups. Thereby the authors have concluded that the parameters of the single-modal Weibull model are dependent on the fiber diameter, so that the model is inadequate to reproduce the strength size effect. On the other hand, Weibull parameters were found consistent between the two groups by excluding the data of 'large mirror zone' sample, which was defined as the sample around 10% mirror zone area of the fracture surface. What is more, the exclusion reduced the strength variance more drastically in the 'large diameter' group than in the 'small diameter' group, even though the 'large mirror zone' samples were found identical in the percentage between the two groups. The authors therefore conclude that diameter limitation to the 'small diameter' group level can lead to drastically less distributed strength values than the estimated strength through the Weibull scaling on the present Tyranno ZMI Si-Zr-C-O fiber.

Ultra precision cutting should be satisfied with two conditions of Mirror Like and shape grade, and especially Mirror Like depends on surface roughness. In this study, in order to develop Mirror Cutting for Al alloy, this was done with edge form of single crystal diamond tool divided into R type and S type. Surface roughness machined by S type tool is more satisfactory than by R type tool, being the lowest value of 13.8nm. In addition, Mirror surface can reach above 90% of reflection rate by both R type and S type tool, but machined surface by R type tool has much more fine fracture portions rather than by S type tool. Even though feed rate decreases from 5.mu.m to 1.mu.m, surface roughness doesn't show improvement.
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the block shear and the fracture in the net section, according to AISC Specifications, by analysing the shear lag effect in the block shear rupture of the single angle with three or four bolt connection. Specimen with three or four bolt connections showed that failure generally went from block shear with some net section failures to classic net section failures. From the test results, showed that the connection length, the thickness of angle, and reduction factor, which affect the block shear rupture, were investigated. According to the test results, it is suggested that the calculation of the net section rupture capacity by using the reduction factor of U, that was suggested by Kulak, is needed.

Many researches have published numerous papers about the high-strain-rate obtained from Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) tests. And 6.5wt%Si steel is widely known as an excellent magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. Single crystals are prepared by the Floating Zone(FZ) method, which melts the alloy by the use of a high temperature electron beam in a pure argon gas condition. In this paper, the fracture behavior of the poly crystals and single crystals (DO$_3$phase) of Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy by SHPB test is observed. The comparison of high-strain-rate results with static results was done. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy has higher strength at high-strain-rate tensile. SHPB results of polycrystal are twice as high as static results. (2) From the fractography, the cleavage steps are remarkably reduced in the SHPB test compared with the static test.
High Strength low alloy steels containing various levels of C, Nb and Mn were used and for each of which, a simulated double thermal cycle was applied with the same first peak temperature and different second peak temperatures to produce HAZ microstructure corresponding to multi-pass weld. Effect of double cycle second temperature on the microstructure was observed and compared with single cycle results obtained from previous works, it was found that the percentage of martensite austenite constituent (MA) increases by Nb addition for all steels with the same Mn content and the increase in Mn content at the same Nb content shows an increase in MA area fraction as well. MA area fraction obtained for the double cycle is larger than that obtained for the single cycle for all steels used which imply that MA will have great role in the brittle fracture initiation for double cycle and the inter-pass temperature should be controlled for medium and high-carbon Mn steel to avoid large area fraction of MA. The beneficial effects of Niobium obtained in single pass weld were not observed for the double cycle or multi pass welds.
