Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gathered attention as a novel bioenergy technology to simultaneously treat wastewater with less sludge production than the conventional activated sludge system. In two different operations of the MFC and aerobic process, microbial growth was determined by the protein assay method and their biomass yields using real wastewater were compared. The biomass yield on the anode electrode of the MFC was 0.02 g-COD-cell/gCOD-substrate and the anolyte planktonic biomass was 0.14 g-COD-cell/g-COD-substrate. An MFC without anode electrode resulted in the biomass yield of 0.07 ± 0.03 g-COD-cell/g-CODsubstrate, suggesting that oxygen diffusion from the cathode possibly supported the microbial growth. In a comparative test, the biomass yield under aerobic environment was 0.46 ± 0.07 g-COD-cell/g-COD-substrate, which was about 3 times higher than the total biomass value in the MFC operation.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a new method to determine a combustion phase (start of combustion and end of combustion) using a combustion pressure data. Unlike previous research method that used heat release amount, the difference between the combustion pressure measured in the combustion chamber and the motoring pressure was used to determine the combustion phase. This research was conducted using a single-cylinder diesel engine with a compression ratio of 17.7. The test was conducted under various injection timing. The newly proposed method showed high accuracy in combustion mode with early injection, as well as the conventional combustion mode. It is expected that this method will be used to study new combustion strategies such as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) and RCCI (reactivity controlled compression ignition) that are applying early injection strategies as well as existing combustion modes.

This paper presents Bi thin films have been fabricated by atomic layer-by-layer deposition and co-deposition at an IBS method. The growth rates of the films was set in the region from 0.17 to 0.27 nm/min. MgO(100) was used as a substrate. In order to appreciate stable existing region of Bi 2212 phase with temperature and ozone pressure, the substrate temperature was varied between 655 and $820^{\circ}C$ and the highly condensed ozone gas pressure$(PO_3)$ in vacuum chamber was varied between $2.0{\times}10^{-6}$ and $2.3{\times}10^{-5}Torr$. Bi 2212 phase appeared in the temperature range of 750 and $795^{\circ}C$: and single phase of Bi 2201 existed in the lower region than $785^{\circ}C$. Whereas, $PO_3$ dependance on structural formation was scarcely observed regardless of the pressure variation. And high quality of c-axis oriented Bi 2212 thin film with $T_c$(onset) of about 90 K and $T_c$(zero) of about 45 K is obtained. Only a small amount of CuO in some films was observed as impurity, and no impurity phase such as $CaCuO_2$ was observed in all of the obtained films.
Gold (Au) is not supposed to react with sapphire(single crystalline ) under thermodynamic equillibrium, therefore, a strong adhesion between these two dissimilar materials is not expected. However, pull test showed that the gold film sputter-deposited onto annealed and pre-sputtered sapphire exhibited very strong adhesion even without post-deposition annealing. Strongly and weakly adhered samples as a result of the pull testing were selected to investigate the adhesion mechanisms with Auger electron spectroscopy. The Au/ interfaces were analyzed using a new technique that probes the interface on the film using Auger electron escape depth. It revealed that one or two monolayers of Au-Al-O compound formed at the Au/Sapphire interface when AES in the UHV chamber. It showed that metallic aluminum was detected on the surface of sapphire substrates after irradiating for 3 min. with 7keV Ar+ -ions. These results agree with TRIM calculations that yield preferential ion-beam etching. It is concluded that the formation of Au-Al-O compound, which is responsible for the strong metal-ceramic bonding, is due to ion-induced cleaning and reduction of the sapphire surface, and the kinetic energy of depositing gold atoms, molecules, and micro-particles as a driving force for the inter-facial reaction.

In this study, injection quantity, rate and spray image of multiple injections which are important design parameters for a piezo type injector have been investigated. Interval of injections and a number of injections in multiple injection strategy has been controlled to verify interaction of each injection. Spray characteristics of multiple injections have been researched through optical process with a high speed camera in a high pressure chamber. In addition, a method of RMS(Root Mean Square) process has been used for comprehending the distribution of injection easily. As a result, in case of piezo type injector, characteristics of injection quantity according to charging voltage and the difference of injection quantity between single and triple injection were confirmed. Also, injection rate for increasing injection duration was confirmed. And spray characteristics of multiple injections were improved; multiple injections were possible in a shorter time interval between each injection. With this study, a possibilities of more accurate multiple injection control would be expected.
There has been a growing interest in the recent time for the development of solar power tower plants, which are mainly used for utility scale power generation. Combined heat and power (CHP) is an efficient and clean approach to generate electric power and useful thermal energy from a single heat source. The waste heat from the topping Brayton cycle is utilized in the bottoming HRSG cycle for driving steam turbine and also to produce process steam so that efficiency of the cycle is increased. A thermal storage system is likely to add greater reliability to such plants, providing power even during non-peak sunshine hours. This paper presents a conceptual configuration of a solar power tower combined heat and power plant with a topping air Brayton cycle. A simple downstream Rankine cycle with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a process heater have been considered for integration with the solar Brayton cycle. The conventional GT combustion chamber is replaced with a solar receiver. The combined cycle has been analyzed using energy as well as exergy methods for a range of pressure ratio across the GT block. From the thermodynamic analysis, it is found that such an integrated system would give a maximum total power (2.37 MW) at a much lower pressure ratio (5) with an overall efficiency exceeding 27%. The solar receiver and heliostats are the main components responsible for exergy destruction. However, exergetic performance of the components is found to improve at higher pressure ratio of the GT block.

This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological(MR) damper based on analytical methodology and finite element analysis. The proposed MR damper consists of MR valve and gas chamber. The MR valve is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies geometric dimensions of the valve structure that maximize the pressure drop of the MR valve or damping force of the MR damper. In this work, the single-coil annular MR valve structure is considered. After describing the schematic configuration and operating principle of MR valve and damper, a quasi-static model is derived based on Bingham model of MR fluid. The magnetic circuit of the valve and damper is then analyzed by applying the Kirchoff’s law and magnetic flux conservation rule. Based on the quasi-static modeling and the magnetic circuit analysis, the optimization problem of the MR valve and damper is built. The optimal solution of the optimization problem of the MR valve structure constrained in a specific volume is then obtained and compared with the solution obtained from finite element method.

As a semiconductor material for electronic devices operated under extreme environmental conditions, silicon carbides (SiCs) have been intensively studied because of their excellent electrical, thermal and other physical properties. The growth characteristics of single-crystalline 4H-SiC homoepitaxial layers grown by a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were investigated. Especially, the successful growth condition of 4H-SiC homoepitaxial layers using a SiC-uncoated graphite susceptor that utilized Mo-plates was obtained. The CVD growth was performed in an RF-induction heated atmospheric pressure chamber and carried out using off-oriented substrates prepared by a modified Lely method. In order to investigate the crystallinity of grown epilayers, Nomarski optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence(PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other techniques were utilized. The best quality of 4H-SiC homoepitaxial layers was observed in conditions of growth temperature 1500$^{\circ}C$ and C/Si flow ratio 2.0 of C3H3 0.2sccm & SiH4 0.3sccm. The growth rate of epilayers was about 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$/h in the above growth condition.

Two-dimensional steady state simulations of planar type radio frequency inductively coupled plasma (RFICP) have been performed. The characteristics of RFICP were investigated in terms of power transfer efficiency, equivalent circuit analysis, spatial distribution of plasma density and electron temperature. Plasma density and electron temperature were determined from the equations of ambipolar diffusion and energy conservation. Joule heating, ionization, excitation and elastic collision loss were included as the source terms of the electron energy equation. The electromagnetic field was calculated from the vector potential formulation of ampere's law. The peak electron temperature decreases from about 4eV to 2eV as pressure increases from 5 mTorr to 100 mTorr. The peak density increases with increasing pressure. Electron temperatures at the center of the chamber are almost independent of input power and electron densities linearly increase with power level. The results agree well with theoretical analysis and experimental results. A single turn, edge feeding antenna configuration shows better density uniformity than a four-turn antenna system at relatively low pressure conditions. The thickness of the dielectric window should be minimized to reduce power loss. The equivalent resistance of the system increases with both power and pressure, which reflects the improvement of power transfer efficiency.

This paper presents deposition and characterizations of microcrystalline silicon(${\mu}$c-Si:H) films prepared by hot wire chemical vapor deposition at substrate temperature below 300$^{\circ}C$. The SiH$_4$ concentration[F(SiH$_4$)/F(SiH$_4$).+(H$_2$)] is critical parameter for the formation of Si films with microcrystalline phase. At 6% of silane concentration, deposited intrinsic ${\mu}$c-Si:H films shows sufficiently low dark conductivity and high photo sensitivity for solar cell applications. P-type ${\mu}$c-S:H films deposited by Hot-Wire CVD also shows good electrical properties by varying the rate of B$_2$H$\_$6/ to SiH$_4$ gas. The solar cells with structure of Al/nip ${\mu}$c-Si:H/TCO/g1ass was fabricated with single chamber Hot-Wire CVD. About 3% solar efficiency was obtained and applicability of HWCVD for thin film solar cells was proven in this research.
