  • This paper describes on the extraction of ship's real-time movement information using a combination full-function ARPA radar and ECS system that displays radar images and an electronic chart together on a single PC screen. The radar target extractor(RTX) board, developed by Marine Electronics Corporation of Korea, receives radar video, trigger, antenna bearing pulse and heading pulse signals from a radar unit and processes these signals to extract target information. The target data extracted from each pulse repetition interval in DSPs of RTX that installed in 16 bit ISA slot of a IBM PC compatible computer is formatted into a series of radar target messages. These messages are then transmitted to the host PC and displayed on a single screen. The position data of target in range and azimuth direction are stored and used for determining the center of the distributed target by arithmetic averaging after the detection of the target end. In this system, the electronic chart or radar screens can be displayed separately or simulaneously and in radar mode all information of radar targets can be recorded and replayed In spite of a PC based radar system, all essential information required for safe and efficient navigation of ship can be provided.

  • In a traditional phased array radar, closely spaced antenna elements transmit a scaled version of single waveform to maximize the signal energy. On the contrary, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar consists of widely separated antennas and transmits an arbitrary waveform from each antenna element. These waveforms and spatial diversity enable superior capabilities compared with phased array radar. At high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the detection performance of the MIMO radar is better than the phased array radar due to the diversity gains. However, the phased array radar outperforms the MIMO radar at low SNR, due to the energy maximization. In this paper, we investigate the compromised scheme between the MIMO radar and the phased array radar. Employing the MIMO radar equipped with phased array elements, the compromised scheme achieves both array gain and diversity gain. Also, we compare the performance degradation when the steering direction is incorrect.

  • For an adaptive cruise control (ACC) stop-and-go system in automotive applications, three radar sensors are needed because two 24 GHz short range radars are used for object detection in an adjacent lane, and one 77 GHz long-range radar is used for object detection in the center lane. In this letter, we propose a single sensor-based 24 GHz radar with a detection capability of up to 150 m and ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ for an ACC stop-and-go system. The developed radar is highly integrated with a high gain patch antenna, four channel receivers with GaAs RF ICs, and back-end processing board with subspace based digital beam forming algorithm.

  • In this paper, a microstrip patch array antenna for a Doppler radar at 10.525GHz is desinged and fabricated. To be used for mobile radar system, the antenna is fabricated on a single layer laminate to resist a fire impact and is covered with the Teflon foam. To obtain the desired characteristics, the array antenna is designed 4$\times$8 array using a corporate 3-dB amplitude taper. Also, using square patch elements, the antenna can be converted to a circular polarized antenna later. The designed and fabricated array antenna has the reflection coefficient$({S_11})$ -53.498dB, the horizontal beam width of $10^{\circ}$, the vertical beam width of $18.8^{\circ}$, the gain of 21dBi, the bandwidth of 220MHz for VSWR<1.5 and a side lobe level of less than -17.5dB.

  • This paper introduces new wideband antenna-filter-antenna (AFA) uniform arrays that can be utilized as frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with low loss and sharp roll-off response, which are highly desirable characteristics for millimeter wave applications. The design adopts a simple 3-layer single polarization structure consisting of two patch antennas and a resonator. Both simulations and measurements are used to characterize the performances of the proposed design. Overall results show 18.5% 10-dB bandwidth. For the targeted band the insertion loss is less than 0.2 dB. Possible applications include quasi-optical amps, grid mixers and radomes for aircraft radar antennas.

  • The position and trajectory of in-flight rocket are important informations to determine the flight safety of rocket. In general tracking system, radar and transponder are used to acquire position information. Rocket position and trajectory can be determined by using RF communication between ground station and in-flight rocket and antenna position data. Onboard transponder system is composed of RF receiving part, RF transmitting one, decoder and single TX/ RX antenna. Therefore circulator is necessary for minimizing RF signal interference. In this paper, the radar transponder system was developed to track the trajectory and position of KSR-Ⅲ by using radar.

  • In this paper, the X($1{\times}2$, 10.525 GHz) and K($3{\times}6$, 24.15 GHz) bands patch array antenna having single feed line for radar detector applications is proposed. The left side of the proposed array antenna is X band array antenna and the right is K band array antenna. Two array antennas with two stubs located in the front of antennas are fed through one transmission line. If the array antennas which have the different resonance frequency are fed by one transmission line using general T-junction, it interferes each other and the array antenna lost its character. Therefore, to prevent these interferences, two stubs using open and short property of stub are designed. First of all, the performances of array antenna weren't changed when each array antennas were connected with the stub and in the end, it is found out that it was the same when the two array antennas were combined and feed through the one transmission line. The measured gain at X band is 6.47 dBi and measured gain at K band is 13.07 dBi. The experimental results agree well with the simulated ones.

  • In this paper, we describe the design, fabrication, and test results of a W-band FMCW radar for the metal target detection under the ground clutter environment. In order to detect metal targets on the ground, we used a single cassegrain antenna with the beamwidth of $1.45^{\circ}$ which forms pencil-beam footprint on the ground. A log envelope detector was applied to improve radar performance in the severe ground clutter known as Weibull and log normal clutter. The designed FMCW radar can acquire altitude information from the ground clutter with $\sigma_0=-23dB$ at the height of 160m. The fabricated W-band FMCW radar transmits 11 dBm power and the dynamic range of the receiver is from -106dBm to -30dBm. The performances of the fabricated sensors were tested out in the fields and detected a car target of 200m apart on the grass.

  • In this paper, a method for simultaneously realizing the sum and difference patterns which are required in the monopulse radar sensor systems, is presented by using single taper array antenna with rectangular microstrip patches. The widths of patches are first determined by the voltage weights which are synthesized for the fundamental array factor patterns to be applied to the monopulse operation by using the sidelobe levels(SLLs) control technique. As the bi-directionally series-fed technique is applied and the lengths of connecting lines between patches are appropriately adjusted, the single array generates two phase-shifted beams which activates out-of-phase and in-phase ports of a $180^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler to synthesize the sum and difference patterns. The simulated results on the configuration designed at 9.5 GHz are compared with measured results showing the validity of the proposed method.

  • The Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) estimation in real time is one of core technologies for the real-time tracking system, such as a radar or a satellite. Although AOA estimation algorithms for various antenna types have been studied, most of them are for the single-shaped array antenna suitable to the specific frequency. In this paper, we propose the cascade AOA estimation algorithm for the combined array antenna with Uniform Rectangular Frame Array (URFA) and Uniform Circular Array (UCA), with the excellent performance for various frequencies. The proposed technique is consisted of Capon for roughly finding AOA groups with multiple signal AOAs and Beamspace Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) for estimating the detailed signal AOA in the AOA group, for the combined array antenna. In addition, we provide computer simulation results for verifying the estimation performance of the proposed algorithm.
