  • Overlay routing has emerged as a promising approach to improve reliability and efficiency of the Internet. The key to overlay routing is the placement and maintenance of the overlay infrastructure, especially, the selection and placement of key relay nodes. Spurred by the observation that a few relay nodes with high betweenness centrality can provide more optimal routes for a large number of node pairs, we propose a resilient routing overlay network construction method by introducing Super-Relay nodes. In detail, we present the K-Minimum Spanning Tree with Super-Relay nodes algorithm (SR-KMST), in which we focus on the selection and connection of Super-Relay nodes to optimize the routing quality in a resilient and scalable manner. For the simultaneous path failures between the default physical path and the overlay backup path, we also address the selection of recovery path. The objective is to select a proper one-hop recovery path with minimum cost in path probing and measurement. Simulations based on a real ISP network and a synthetic Internet topology show that our approach can provide high-quality overlay routing service, while achieving good robustness.

  • The scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy (SMM) is a dynamic noncontact electric force microscopy that allows simultaneous access to the electrical properties of molecular system such as surface potential, surface charge, dielectric constant and conductivity along with the topography. The Scanning near-field optical / atomic force microscopy (SNOAM) is a new tool for surface imaging which was introduced as one application of the atomic force microscope (AFM). Operated with non-contact forces between the optical fiber and sample as well as equipped with the piezoscanners, the instrument reports on surface topology without damaging or modifying the surface for measuring of optical characteristic in the films. We report our recent results of its application to nanoscopic study of domain structures and electrical functionality in organic thin films by SMM. Furthermore, we have illustrated the SNOAM image in obtaining the merocyanine dye films as well as the optical image.

  • Wear on the tube-to-spring contact is investigated experimentally, The vibration of the tube causes the wear while the springs support it As for the supporting conditions, the contacting normal farce of 5 N,0 N and the gap of 0.1 mm are applied. The gap condition is for considering the influence of simultaneous impacting and sliding on wear. The wear volume and depth decreases in the order of the 5 N,0 N and the gap conditions. This is explained from the contact geometry of the spring, which is convex of smooth contour, The contact shear force is regarded smaller in the case of the gap existence compared with the other conditions. The wear mechanism is considered from SEM observation of the worn surface. The variation of the normal contact traction is analysed using the finite element analysis to estimate the slip displacement range on the contact with consulting the fretting map.

  • We present the interim results of simultaneous observations of SiO and H2O masers toward 401 known stellar SiO and/or H2O maser sources (166 both SiO and H2O maser sources, 83 only SiO maser sources, and 152 only H2O maser sources) using KVN_Yonsei telescope. The results of 166 known SiO/H2O maser sources will be presented by Kim et al. and the results of 83 only SiO maser sources and 152 only H2O maser sources presented here. Both SiO and H2O maser emission were detected from 30 sources giving a detection rate of 36 % toward known 83 only SiO maser sources, while they were detected from 66 sources giving a detection rate of 43 % toward known 152 only H2O maser sources at one epoch observation. Only SiO masers were detected from 42 sources toward 83 only SiO sources, while they were detected from 28 sources toward 152 only H2O sources. Characteristics of these observed sources in the IRAS two-color diagram is investigated including mutual relations between SiO and H2O maser emission. In addition, these results will be useful for statistical study of late-type stars and future VLBI observations.

  • We discuss the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of the forest canopy and floor separately based on airborne spectral reflectance measurements and simultaneous airborne land surface images acquired around Yakutsk, Siberia in 2000. The aerial land surface images were visually classified into four forest types: no-green canopy and snow floor (Type-1), green canopy and snow floor (Type-2), no-green canopy and no-snow floor (Type-3), and green canopy and no-snow floor (Type-4). The mean NDVI was calculated for these four types. Although Type-2 had green canopy, the NDVI was rather small (0.17) because of high reflection from the snow cover on the floor. Type-3, which had no green canopy, indicated considerably large NDVI (0.45) due to the greenness of the floor. Type-4 had the largest NDVI (0.75) because of the greenness of both the canopy and floor. These results reveal that the NDVI depends considerably on forest floor greenness and snow cover in addition to canopy greenness.

  • The physical scenario describing the origin of quasar winds remains largely unsettled due to our failure to account for X-ray weak BAL quasars. We approach this problem by studying the relation between the inner part of the outflow which is likely to be shielding the X-ray emission and thereby helping to drive the UV winds characterised by broad absorption lines (BALs). In particular, we aim to probe the wind-shield connection in the highly X-ray variable BAL quasar PG 2112+059, which has exhibited periods of X-ray weakness and X-ray normality in the past. A set of two 20 ks Chandra observations and two contemporaneous HST observations, separated by at least eight months, combined with a nearly simultaneous archival Chandra-HST observation from 2002, afford us a unique opportunity to study the connection between the shield (which is thought to be responsible for the X-ray absorption) and the ionisation state of the wind (observed as UV BAL features; e.g., C IV and O VI lines) over various timescales.

  • In this study, pre-treatment was performed on kapok, a hydrophobic fiber, to compare dyeability by hydrophilization. The pretreatment conditions of kapok fiber were used with different amounts of sodium oleate(NaO), a fatty acid-based anionic surfactant, and xanthan gum(XG) as a natural thickener. At this time, NaO and XG were separately or mixed treated with 0.01%, 0.1%, 1% aqueous solution at 80℃ for 30 min. Hydrophilicity through dyeing was confirmed using Sappan wood extract. Therefore, SEM observation was performed to investigate the surface change of kapok fiber according to the conditions. The surface color difference was also analyzed. Pretreated kapok fibers were made from nonwoven fabrics and the contact angles were measured to determine their hydrophilization. The surface of the fiber after pretreatment was found to be cracked when NaO and NaO were mixed with XG. The surface color was the highest in a and K/S values after the simultaneous treatment of NaO and XG, followed by NaO pretreatment and XG pretreatment. The contact angle of kapok fiber made of nonwoven fabric was slightly lower at 300g/㎡ than the fabric weight of 150g/㎡. Such hydrophilized nonwoven kapok fiber are expected to be used in various fields.

  • It does not seem necessarily practicable to keep the system always in optimal condition, athough the control system of the follow-up mechanism on the most marine gyro compasses is to be adjusted by the operator through the gain adjustment. Sometimes a sustained oscillation or an incorrect gyro reading occurs to the system. For such a system any systematical research or theoretical basis of the guide for the optimal gain adjustment has not been reported yet. As a basic investigation of the theoretical system analysis to solve the problems concerned, the author attempts in this paper to express the system in a mathematical model deduced from the results of the theoretical approach and the experimental observation of each element contained in the follow-up mechanism of Hokshin D-1 gyro compass, and to constitute an over-all closed loop transfer function. This funciton being reverted to a fourth orderlinear differential equation, the first order simultaneous differential equations are obtained by means of the state-variables. The latter equations are solved by the Runge-Kutta method with digital computer. By comparing the characteristic of the simulated over-all output with that of the experimental result, it is shown that both outputs are nearly consistent with each other. It is also expected that the system representation proposed by this paper is valid and will be a prospective means in a further study on the design and optimal adjustment of the system.

  • A sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) operated with a cycle of anaerobic - aerobic - anoxic - aerobic has been evaluated for the nutrient removal characteristics. The sponge-like moving media was filled to about 10% of reactor volume. The sewage was the major substrate while external synthetic carbon substrate was added to the anoxic stage to enhance the nitrogen removal. The operational results indicated that maximum T-N and T-P removal efficiencies were 97% and 94%, respectively were achieved, while COD removal of 92%. The observations of significant nitrogen removal in the first aerobic stage indicated that nitrogen removal behaviour in this SBBR was different to conventional SBR. Although the reasons for aerobic nitrogen removal has speculated to either simultaneous nitrification and denitrification or anoxic denitrification inside of the media, further researches are required to confirm the observation. The specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) test with biofilm and suspended growth sludge indicated that biofilm in SBBR played a major role to remove substrates.

  • Two kinds of static and dynamic state estimation methods are newly discussed for the problem of the measurement disturbance of environmental low-frequency noise in the presence of wind-induced noise. First, the probability characteristics of wind-induced noise are discussed in the form of probability distribution conditioned by wind speed, based on the simultaneous observation of the wind-induced noise and wind speed near a microphone. Next, especially form the viewpoint of simplicity for practical use, two kinds of static and dynamic state estimation methods are discussed. The static estimation method using the information on wind speed is fundamentally supported by the conservation principle of energy sum. The dynamic one is the method by using a recursive digital filter with the parameters successively renewed by the information on wind speed. This can be also simplified by using well-know Kalman filter under the assumption of the Gaussian distribution. The effectiveness of proposed two estimation methods are shown through experiments under a breezy condition in the open filed.
