  • The in-vessel retention through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC) strategy is a key management strategy for early termination of a nuclear severe accident that can threaten the integrity of the reactor vessel. To simulate the physical phenomena of the molten corium, the smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) method is utilized in this study. The SPH method is a Lagrangian computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method that can simulate multi-fluid stratification, turbulence, natural circulation, radiative heat transfer, thermal ablation, and crust formation. To address the external vessel cooling, it is coupled with a conventional 1-D nuclear system analysis method. The 1-D system analysis code can calculate the two-phase natural circulation of cooling water and the convective heat transfer on the external reactor vessel wall. These two simulation codes exchange the temperature and heat flux of the reactor vessel outer wall. This study numerically simulated the IVR-ERVC strategy for a Korean high-power reactor and compared it with the traditional lumped parameter method (LPM). Unlike LPM, this study provides localized detailed data about the thermal hydraulic behavior of molten corium and visualization of phenomena in the IVR-ERVC strategy. This enhances our understanding of the phenomena in IVR-ERVC strategy and introduces new perspectives.

  • We investigated the geochemistry and environmental isotopes of granite-bedrock groundwater in the Yeongcheon diversion tunnel which is located about 300 m below the land surface. The hydrochemistry of groundwaters belongs to the Ca-HCO$_3$type, and is controlled by flow systems and water-rock interaction in the flow conduits (fractures). The deuterium and oxygen-18 data are clustered along the meteoric water line, indicating that the groundwater are commonly of meteoric water origin and are not affected by secondary isotope effects such as evaporation and isotope exchange. Tritium data show that the groundwaters were mostly recharged before pre-thermonuclear period and have been mixed with younger surface water flowing down rapidly into the tunnel along fractured zones. Based on the mass balance and reaction simulation approaches, using both the hydrochemistry of groundwater and the secondary mineralogy of fracture-filling materials, we have modeled the low-temperature hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater in the area. The results of geochemical simulation show that the concentrations of Ca$\^$2+/, Na$\^$+/ and HCO$_3$and pH of waters increase progressively owing to the dissolution of reactive minerals in flow paths. The concentrations of Mg$\^$2+/ and K$\^$+/ frist increase with the dissolution, but later decrease when montmorillonite and illitic material are precipitated respectively. The continuous adding of reactive minerals, namely the progressively larger degrees of water/rock interaction, causes the formation of secondary minerals with the following sequence: first hematite, then gibbsite, then kaolinite, then montmorillonite, then illtic material, and finally microcline. During the simulation all the gibbsite is consumed, kaolinite precipitates and then the continuous reaction converts the kaolinite to montmorillonite and illitic material. The reaction simulation results agree well with the observed, water chemistry and secondary mineralogy, indicating the successful applicability of this simulation technique to delineate the complex hydrogeochemistry of bedrock groundwaters.

  • In this paper, we propose a bi-directional coding method (BTC) using time reversal mirror for effective data exchange between mobile stations and basestations. In conventional relay systems, while one node transmits data, other nodes should keep silent to avoid interference. Thus, to interchange data between basestations and mobile stations, it needs four stages. However, using the proposed BTC method, a relay station transmits a probe source before data transmission, and using this information, mobile stations and basestations transmit data to the relay station simultaneously. Therefore, since it exchanges data in only two steps, the system achieves improved system capacity. In addition, owing to no need for complex calculation, the relay system can be implemented with low complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves enhanced system capacity.

  • The water transport and water content of the electrolyte membrane greatly affect the performance of the membrane in PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). In this study, the parameters (electroosmotic coefficient, water diffusion coefficient) of polymer membranes for water transport were measured by a simple method, and water flux and ion conductivity were simulated by using a model equation. One dimensional steady state model equation was constructed by using only the electro-osmosis and diffusion as the driving force of water transport. The governing equations were simulated with MATLAB. The electro-osmotic coefficient of $144{\mu}m$ thick polymer membranes was measured in hydrogen pumping cell, the value was 1.11. The water diffusion coefficient was expressed as a function of relative humidity and the activation energy for water diffusion was $2,889kJ/mol{\cdot}K$. The water flux and ion conductivity results simulated by applying these coefficients showed good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Dam reservoirs have been reported to contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, but unlike natural lakes, there is considerable uncertainty in calculating carbon emissions due to the complex of emission pathways. In particular, the method of calculating carbon dioxide (CO2) net atmospheric flux (NAF) based on a simple gas exchange theory from sporadic data has limitations in explaining the spatiotemporal variations in the CO2 flux in stratified reservoirs. This study was aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal CO2 distribution and mass balance in Daecheong Reservoir, located in the mid-latitude monsoon climate zone, by applying a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2). Simulation results showed that the Daecheong Reservoir is a heterotrophic system in which CO2 is supersaturated as a whole and releases CO2 to the atmosphere. Spatially, CO2 emissions were greater in the lacustrine zone than in the riverine and transition zones. In terms of time, CO2 emissions changed dynamically according to the temporal stratification structure of the reservoir and temporal variations of algae biomass. CO2 emissions were greater at night than during the day and were seasonally greatest in winter. The CO2 NAF calculated by the CE-QUAL-W2 model and the gas exchange theory showed a similar range, but there was a difference in the point of occurrence of the peak value. The findings provide useful information to improve the quantification of CO2 emissions from reservoirs. In order to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of reservoir carbon emissions, more precise monitoring in time and space is required.

  • Global atmospheric $CO_2$ distributions were simulated with a chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) and compared with space-borne observations of $CO_2$ column density by GOSAT from April 2009 to January 2010. The GEOS-Chem model simulated 3-D global atmospheric $CO_2$ at $2^{\circ}{\times}2.5^{\circ}$ horizontal resolution using global $CO_2$ surface sources/sinks as well as 3-D emissions from aviation and the atmospheric oxidation of other carbon species. The seasonal cycle and spatial distribution of GEOS-Chem $CO_2$ columns were generally comparable with GOSAT columns over each continent with a systematic positive bias of ~1.0%. Data from the World Data Center for Greenhouse Gases (WDCGG) from twelve ground stations spanning $90^{\circ}S-82^{\circ}N$ were also compared with the modeled data for the period of 2004-2009 inclusive. The ground-based data show high correlations with the GEOS-Chem simulation ($0.66{\leq}R^2{\leq}0.99$) but the model data have a negative bias of ~1.0%, which is primarily due to the model initial conditions. Together these two comparisons can be used to infer that GOSAT $CO_2$ retrievals underestimate $CO_2$ column concentration by ~2.0%, as demonstrated in recent validation work using other methods. We further estimated individual source/sink contributions to the global atmospheric $CO_2$ budget and trends through 7 tagged $CO_2$ tracers (fossil fuels, ocean exchanges, biomass burning, biofuel burning, net terrestrial exchange, shipping, aviation, and CO oxidation) over 2004-2009. The global $CO_2$ trend over this period (2.1 ppmv/year) has been mainly driven by fossil fuel combustion and cement production (3.2 ppmv/year), reinforcing the fact that rigorous $CO_2$ reductions from human activities are necessary in order to stabilize atmospheric $CO_2$ levels.

  • In wireless sensor networks, real-time data delivery schemes typically achieve a desired delivery speed by performing one-hop lookahead. Recently, to reduce the deadline miss ratio against the desired delivery speed, a study has proposed a real-time routing protocol based on proactively performing two-hop lookahead. However, the study might cause heavy message exchange overhead and high computing complexity to carry out obtainment of two-hop neighborhood speed information in the entire sensor nodes whether data are delivered or not. Moreover, although multi-hop lookahead provides the least deadline miss ratio, due to the restriction from the overhead and the complexity, the recent study merely adopts the two-hop lookahead manner. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time routing protocol that adopts on-demand neighborhood multi-hop information obtainments only around data forwarding paths. Simulation results prove that the proposed routing protocol offers better performances with respect to deadline miss ratio, total communication costs, energy efficiency, and network lifetime.

  • An underlying assumption in geographic routing protocols, periodic position exchange among neighbors has two problems: (1) unnecessary energy consumptions of nodes in regions without data delivery and (2) position invalidation of neighbors in forwarding data. Hence, this paper proposes an on-demand geographic routing protocol in mobile wireless sensor networks. The proposed protocol make a sender acquire position information of only necessary neighbors to reduce energy consumption in data forwarding time and determine an optimal node among them as a receiver for relaying data to a destination by considering their mobility. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol is more efficient than an existing geographic routing protocol.

  • In This Paper, we propose relay schemes for network-coding based two-way relay communication in multi relay channel. Two-way relay channel communication is a bi-directional communication that two users exchange their data with the help of a relay. Network-coding based Two-way relay communication can achieve more throughput compared to conventional two-way relay communication. In this paper, we propose relay selection schemes to provide maximum performance considering instantaneous signal-to-noise in multi-relay channel. Simulation results show that the proposed relay selection schemes can provide diversity order according to the number of relays.

  • A model coupling a meteorological predictive model and a vegetation photosynthesis and respiration model was used to simulate $CO_2$ concentrations over coastal basin areas, and modeling results were estimated with aircraft observations during a massive sampling campaign. Along with the flight tracks, the model captured the meteorological variables of potential temperature and wind speed with mean bias results of $0.8^{\circ}C$, and 0.2 m/s, respectively. These results were statistically robust, which allowed for further estimation of the model's performance for $CO_2$ simulations. Two high-resolution emission data sets were adopted to determine $CO_2$ concentrations, and the results show that the model underestimated by 1.8 ppm and 0.9 ppm at higher altitude over the study areas during daytime and nighttime, respectively, on average. Overall, it was concluded that the model's $CO_2$ performance was fairly good at higher altitude over the study areas during the study period.
