End-to-end system level modeling and simulation for medium-voltage DC electric ship power systems

  • Dynamic simulation is critical for electrical ship studies as it obtains the necessary information to capture and characterize system performance over the range of system operations and dynamic events such as disturbances or contingencies. However, modeling and simulation of the interactive electrical and mechanical dynamics involves setting up and solving system equations in time-domain that is typically time consuming and computationally expensive. Accurate assessment of system dynamic behaviors of interest without excessive computational overhead has become a serious concern and challenge for practical application of electrical ship design, analysis, optimization and control. This paper aims to develop a systematic approach to classify the sophisticated dynamic phenomenon encountered in electrical ship modeling and simulation practices based on the design intention and the time scale of interest. Then a novel, comprehensive, coherent, and end-to-end mathematical modeling and simulation approach has been developed for the latest Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) Shipboard Power System (SPS) with the objective to effectively and efficiently capture the system behavior for ship-wide system-level studies. The accuracy and computation efficiency of the proposed approach has been evaluated and validated within the time frame of interest in the cast studies. The significance and the potential application of the proposed modeling and simulation approach are also discussed.

  • This paper reviews existing message-filtering schemes and presents a quantization-based message-filtering approach which reduces state update transmission and message traffic requirement. For a realization of the approach we develop a DEVS-based integrator which provides behavior and characteristic of the quantization-based approach. We take a spaceship and space traveling system as a case study to evaluate performance of the quantization-based approach. The approach is validated by DEVSJAVA simulations of the case study. The comparison of message traffic requirement between DTSS (Discrete Time System Specification)-based and DEVS-based systems apparently shows system performance improvement through the quantization-based approach.

  • In the virtual prototyping (VP) of digital products, it is important to provide the people involved in product development with the visualization and interaction of the products, and the simulation of their human machine interaction (HMI) behaviors in interactive 3D virtual environments. Especially, for the HMI behavior simulation, it is necessary to represent them properly and to play them back effectively according to user interaction in the virtual environments. In a conventional approach to HMI behavior simulation, user interface (UI) designers use UI design software tools to generate the HMI behavior of a digital product of interest. Due to lack of reusability of the HMI behavior, VP developers need to analyze and integrate it into a VP system for its simulation in a 3D virtual environment. As this approach hinders the effective communication between the UI designers and the VP developers, it is easy to create errors and thereby it takes significant time and effort especially when it is required to represent the HMI behavior to the finest level of detail. In order to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional approach, we propose an approach for representing the HMI behavior of a digital product using XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and for reusing it to perform the HMI behavior simulation in 3D virtual environments. Based on the approach, a VP system has been developed and applied for the design evaluation of various products. A case study about the design evaluation is given to show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

  • A parallel integration approach is proposed for real-time simulation of controlled mechanical systems. The proposed approach, which employs the dual-rate integration method in a parallel computing environment, is developed to deal with stiffness and high frequency characteristics of the controlled mechanical systems effectively. Numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in shared memory multiprocessors, Alliant FX/8 and Alliant FX/80.

  • Formidable growth of Internet technologies has revealed challenging issues about its scale and performance evaluation. Modeling and simulation play a central role in the evaluation of the behavior and performance of the large-scale network systems. Large numbers of nodes affect simulation performance, simulation execution time and scalability in a weighty manner. Most of the existing simulators have numerous problems such as size, lack of system theoretic approach and complexity of modeled network. In this work, a scalable discrete-event modeling approach is described for studying networks' scalability and performance traits. Key fundamental attributes of Internet and its protocols are incorporated into a set of simulation models developed using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) approach. Large-scale network models are simulated and evaluated to show the benefits of the developed network models and approaches.

  • By means of the transformation from the problem of fuzzy reliability to the problem of general reliability, a model for analyzing fuzzy reliability is introduced in this paper Because of the complexity of the Problem of the fuzzy reliability, generally speaking, the analytical equations for calculating fuzzy reliability indexes of machine part cannot be obtained in most cases. Therefore, in this paper, an approach is given wherein progressions are employed to calculate them, or a simulation approach is used to estimate them by expressing general reliability indexes as progressions. By utilizing the approach put forwards in the paper, the calculating quantity for analyzing the fuzzy reliability will be reduced : even substantially reduced sometimes. Some examples are taken to explain the feasibility of the model and a simulation approach.

  • Since world container throughput continues to grow, the main issues facing decision-makers at port container terminals are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. Simulations can be used in the decision making process tools due to its ease and ability to reflect the real world system.   • We can save a lot of efforts and time to perform various kinds of multibody system dynamics simulations if the equations of motion of the multibody system can be formulated automatically. In general, the equations of motion are formulated based on Newton's $2^{nd}$law. And they can be transformed into the equations composed of independent variables by using velocity transformation matrix. In this paper the velocity transformation matrix is derived based on a topological modeling approach which considers the topology and the joint property of the multibody system. This approach is, then, used to formulate the equations of motion automatically and to implement a multibody system dynamics simulation program. To verify the the efficiency and convenience of the program, it is applied to the lifting simulation of a floating crane.

  • Many of companies have made significant improvements for globalization and competitive business environment The supply chain management has received many attentions in the area of that business environment. The purpose of this study is to generate realistic production and distribution planning in the supply chain network. The planning model determines the best schedule using operation sequences and routing to deliver. To solve the problem a hybrid approach involving a genetic algorithm (GA) and computer simulation is proposed. This proposed approach is for: (1) selecting the best machine for each operation, (2) deciding the sequence of operation to product and route to deliver, and (3) minimizing the completion time for each order. This study developed mathematical model for production, distribution, production-distribution and proposed GA-Simulation solution procedure. The results of computational experiments for a simple example of the supply chain network are given and discussed to validate the proposed approach. It has been shown that the hybrid approach is powerful for complex production and distribution planning in the manufacturing supply chain network. The proposed approach can be used to generate realistic production and distribution planning considering stochastic natures in the actual supply chain and support decision making for companies.

  • In this study, we try to improve the accuracy of QN-GPH by the help of simulation approach. We first establish an estimation method for GPH distributions with sufficient accuracy based on empirical distribution, and then perform a brief trial run to find appropriate empirical distributions. After getting GPH form of distributions, we continue the QN-GPH analytic steps and compute necessary performance measures. We apply the method to find sojourn time distributions in a 8-node queueing system and compare the results with the whole simulation and the original two-parametric approximation.
