Translucent alumina is a potential candidate for high temperature application as a replacement of the glass or polymer. Recently, due to the increasing demand of high power light emitting diode (LED), there is a growing interest in the translucent alumina. Since the translucent property is very sensitive to the internal defect, such as voids inside or abnormal grain growth of sintered alumina, it is important to fabricate the defect-free product through the fabrication process. Powder injection molding (PIM) has been commonly applied for the fabrication of complex shaped products. Among the many parameters of PIM, the flowability of powder/binder mixture becomes more significant especially for the shape of the cavity with thin thickness. Two different positions of the gate were applied during PIM using the disc type of die. The binder was removed by solvent extraction method and the brown compact was sintered at $1750^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in a vacuum. The flowability was also simulated using moldflow (MPI 6.0) with two different types of gate. The effect of the flowability of powder/binder mixture on the microstructure of the sintered specimen was studied with the analysis of the simulation result.

In this paper, the influence of adding multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on the pull behavior of steel and GFRP bars in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) was examined experimentally and numerically. For numerical analysis, 3D nonlinear finite element modeling (FEM) with the help of ABAQUS software was used. Mechanical properties of the specimens, including Young's modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength, were extracted from the experimental results of the tests performed on standard cube specimens and for different values of weight percent of MWCNTs. In order to consider more realistic assumptions, the bond between concrete and bar was simulated using adhesive surfaces and Cohesive Zone Model (CZM), whose parameters were obtained by calibrating the results of the finite element model with the experimental results of pullout tests. The accuracy of the results of the finite element model was proved with conducting the pullout experimental test which showed high accuracy of the proposed model. Then, the effect of different parameters such as the material of bar, the diameter of the bar, as well as the weight percent of MWCNT on the bond behavior of bar and UHPC were studied. The results suggest that modifying UHPC with MWCNT improves bond strength between concrete and bar. In MWCNT per 0.01 and 0.3 wt% of MWCNT, the maximum pullout strength of steel bar with a diameter of 16 mm increased by 52.5% and 58.7% compared to the control specimen (UHPC without nanoparticle). Also, this increase in GFRP bars with a diameter of 16 mm was 34.3% and 45%.

This paper is a preliminary study to apply the lightweight concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bars to the bridge deck slabs or some other concrete structures. So, some different behaviors between the conventional steel reinforced concrete slab and the lightweight concrete slab reinforced with GFRP bars were investigated. For this purpose, a number of slabs were constructed and then the three point bending test and numerical analysis for these slabs were performed. The flexural test results showed that the lightweight concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP bars were failed by the shear failure due to the over-reinforced design. The weight and failure load of the GFRP bar reinforced lightweight concrete slabs were 72% and 58% of the steel reinforced concrete slab with the same dimensions, respectively. Results of the numerical analysis for these slabs using a commercial program, midas FEA, showed that the load-deflection curve could be simulated well until the shear failure of the slabs, but the applied loads and the deflections continuously increased even beyond the shear failure loads.

This study presents new analysis method to predict bending behavior of packaging substrate structure by comparing finite element method simulation and measured curvature using 3D scanner. Packaging substrate is easily bent and deflected while undergoing various processes such as curing of prepreg and copper pattern plating. We prepare specimens with various conditions and measure contours of each specimen and compute the residual stresses on deposited films using analytical solution to find the principle of bending. Core and prepreg in packaging substrate are made up of resin and bundles of fiber which exist orthogonally each other. Anisotropic material properties cause peculiar bending behavior of packaging substrate. We simulate the bending deflection with finite element method and verify the simulated deflection with measured data. The plating stress of electrodeposited copper is about 58 MPa. The curing stresses of solder resist and prepreg are about 13 MPa and 6.4 MPa respectively in room temperature.
Silica glass is a core material for optical fiber in optical telecommunications, but its centrosymmetry eliminates the second order nonlinearity. But it is experimentally well known that the space charge polarization induces the Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) when a strong DC voltage is applied to silica glass for a long period of time with metal blocking electrodes. In this report, the results of a theoretical calculation of the nonlinear optical property caused by the space charge polarization, and a model of a numerical analysis to predict the small chance in nonlinear optical property as functions of time and space are provided. Assuming that amorphous silica is a solid state electrolyte and sodium ion is the only mobile charge carrier, 'Finite Difference Method' was employed for modeling of numerical analysis. The distributions of the concentration of sodium ion and electric field as functions of a normalized length of the specimen and a normalized applied voltage were simulated.

In this paper, the characteristics of fracture in mode I loading were analyzed for adhesively bonded joints with non-uniform adhesion. The Double Cantilever Beam test was performed and mode I fracture toughness was obtained. In the case of non-uniform adhesively bonded joints, the stable crack growth sections and unstable crack growth section were shown. The fracture characteristics of each section were observed through the load-displacement curve of the DCB test and the fracture surface of the specimen. Finite Element Analysis was performed at the section based on segmented section by crack length measured through the test and using the mode I fracture toughness of each section. Through DCB test results and finite element analysis results, it was confirmed that the fracture behavior of specimens with non-uniform adhesion can be simulated.

Thin perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) are among the most common types of seismic energy dissipation systems to protect the main boundary components of SPSWs from fatal fractures in the high-risk zones. In this paper, the cyclic behavior of the different circular hole patterns under cyclic loading is reported. Based on the experimental results, it can be concluded that a change in the perforation pattern of the circular holes leads to a change in the locations of the fracture tendency over the web plate, especially at the plate-frame interactions. Accordingly, the cyclic responses of the tested specimens were simulated by finite element method using the ABAQUS package. Likewise, perforated shear panels with a new perforation pattern obtained by implementing Topology Optimization (TO) were proposed. It was found that the ultimate shear strength of the specimen with the proposed TO perforation pattern was higher than that of the other specimens. In addition, theoretical equations using the Plate-Frame Interaction (PFI) method were used to predict the shear strength and initial stiffness of the considered specimens. The theoretical results showed that the proposed reduced coefficients relationships cannot accurately predict the shear strength and initial stiffness of the considered perforated shear panels. Therefore, the reduced coefficients should be adopted in the theoretical equations based on the obtained experimental and numerical results. Finally, with the results of this study, the shear strength and initial stiffness of these types of perforated shear panels can be predicted by PFI method.

In this work, we have studied the effects of different soil thicknesses, haunch heights, reinforcement forms and construction technologies on the seismic performance of a composite precast fabricated utility tunnel by pseudo-static tests. Five concrete specimens were designed and fabricated for low-cycle reciprocating load tests. The hysteretic behavior of composite precast fabricated utility tunnel under simulated seismic waves and the strain law of steel bars were analyzed. Test results showed that composite precast fabricated utility tunnel met the requirements of current codes and had good anti-seismic performance. The use of a closed integral arrangement of steel bars inside utility tunnel structure as well as diagonal reinforcement bars at its haunches improved the integrity of the whole structure and increased the bearing capacity of the structure by about 1.5%. Increasing the thickness of covering soil within a certain range was beneficial to the earthquake resistance of the structure, and the energy consumption was increased by 10%. Increasing haunch height within a certain range increased the bearing capacity of the structure by up to about 19% and energy consumption by up to 30%. The specimen with the lowest haunch height showed strong structural deformation with ductility coefficient of 4.93. It was found that the interfaces of haunches, post-casting self-compacting concrete, and prefabricated parts were the weak points of utility tunnel structures. Combining the failure phenomena of test structures with their related codes, we proposed improvement measures for construction technology, which could provide a reference for the construction and design of practical projects.
We present a supervised learning method that estimates the simulation parameters required to simulate the fabric from the static drape shape of a given fabric sample. The static drape shape was inspired by Cusick's drape, which is used in the apparel industry to classify fabrics according to their mechanical properties. The input vector of the training model consists of the feature vector extracted from the static drape and the density value of a fabric specimen. The output vector consists of six simulation parameters that have a significant influence on deriving the corresponding drape result. To generate a plausible and unbiased training data set, we first collect simulation parameters for 400 knit fabrics and generate a Gaussian Mixed Model (GMM) generation model from them. Next, a large number of simulation parameters are randomly sampled from the GMM model, and cloth simulation is performed for each sampled simulation parameter to create a virtual static drape. The generated training data is fitted with a log-linear regression model. To evaluate our method, we check the accuracy of the training results with a test data set and compare the visual similarity of the simulated drapes.
In this paper, the shear behavior of soft filling in rectangular-hollow concrete specimens was simulated using the 2D particle flow code (PFC2D). The laboratory-measured properties were used to calibrate some PFC2D micro-properties for modeling the behavior of geo-materials. The dimensions of prepared and modeled samples were 100 mm×100 mm. Some disc type narrow bands were removed from the central part of the model and different lengths of bridge areas (i.e., the distance between internal tips of two joints) with lengths of 30 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm were produced. Then, the middle of the rectangular hollow was filled with cement material. Three filling sizes with dimensions of 5 mm×5 mm, 10 mm×5 mm, and 15 mm×5 mm were provided for different modeled samples. The parallel bond model was used to calibrate and re-produce these modeled specimens. Therefore, totally, 9 different types of samples were designed for the shear tests in PFC2D. The shear load was gradually applied to the model under a constant loading condition of 3 MPa (σc/3). The loading was continued till shear failure occur in the modeled concrete specimens. It has been shown that both tensile and shear cracks may occur in the fillings. The shear cracks mainly initiated from the crack (joint) tips and coalesced with another one. The shear displacements and shear strengths were both increased as the filling dimensions increased (for the case of a bridge area with a particular fixed length).
