Methods based on nonlinear static analysis as simple tools could be used for the seismic analysis and assessment of structures. In the present study, capability of the N2 method as a well-known nonlinear analysis procedure examines for the estimation of the damage index of multi-storey reinforced concrete frames. In the implemented framework, equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) models are utilized for the global damage estimation of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems. This method does not require high computational analysis and subsequently decreases the required time of seismic design and assessment process. To develop the methodology, RC frames with period range from 0.4 to 2.0 s under 40 records are studied. The effectiveness of proposed technique is evaluated through numerical study under near- and far-field earthquake ground motions. Finally, the results of developed models are compared with two other simplified schemes along with nonlinear time history analysis results of multi-storey frames. To improve the accuracy of damage estimation, a modified relation is presented based on the N2 method results for near- and far-field earthquakes.
Quadrupole ion trap mass analyzer with a simplified geometry, namely, the cylindrical ion trap (CIT), has been shown to be well-suited using in miniature mass spectrometry and even in mass spectrometer arrays. Computation of stability regions is of particular importance in designing and assembling an ion trap. However, solving CIT equations are rather more difficult and complex than QIT equations, so, analytical and matrix methods have been widely used to calculate the stability regions. In this article we present the results of numerical simulations of the physical properties and the fractional mass resolutions m/Δm of the confined ions in the first stability region was analyzed by the fifth order Runge-Kutta method (RKM5) at the optimum radius size for both ion traps. Because of similarity the both results, having determining the optimum radius, we can make much easier to design CIT. Also, the simulated results has been performed a high precision in the resolution of trapped ions at the optimum radius size.

What is the "new paradigm"? It is impossible express it in one or two words, but if one had to; the closest might be the "holistic approach". The expression can be justified by the fact that the conclusions above lead to a greater intermixing of mathematics with engineering and natural sciences subjects, typically expressed in the form of examples of simplified real problems. They also lead to a greater intermixing of subjects within mathematics so that the courses should have less separation e.g. between symbolic and numerical mathematics. The conclusions also lead to the spreading the mathematics courses throughout all study years, not just the first two years. Of course, this should be done with great care in order to guarantee studies that are logically linked together. The new paradigm also means that the needs arising from industrial mathematics must be taken into account in the contents of engineering mathematics courses. Such topics are e.g. multivariate methods, statistics and use of mathematical software. What are we expected to gain from the paradigm shift? The primary benefit should be in obtaining more productive engineers equipped with a better degree of mathematical preparedness for engineering problems. But in addition, it should also promote more intensive use of applied mathematics and easier communication with professional mathematicians, often needed in complicated industrial problems.?Finally, it can be noted that the new paradigm is in harmony with the basic ideas of the CDIO (Conceive - Design - Implement - Operate) initiative for producing the next generation of engineers [1]. New ideas for engineering education can be found also in the homepage of SEFI (European Society for Engineering Education) [2].

It is of great significance to utilize a landing mechanism to explore an asteroid. A landing mechanism named ALISE (Asteroid Landing and In Situ Exploring) for asteroid with soft surface is presented. The landing dynamic in the first turning stage, which represents the landing performance of the landing mechanism, is built by a Lagrange equation. Three key parameters can be found influencing the landing performance: the retro-rocket thrust T, damping element damping $c_1$, and cardan element damping $c_2$. In this paper, the retro-rocket thrust T is solved with considering that the landing mechanism has no overturning in extreme landing conditions. The damping element damping c1 is solved by a simplified dynamic model. After solving the parameters T and $c_1$, the cardan element damping $c_2$ is calculated using the landing dynamic model, which is built by Lagrange equation. The validities of these three key parameters are tested by simulation. The results show a stable landing, when landing with the three estimated parameters T, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Therefore, the landing dynamic model and methods to estimate key parameters are reasonable, and are useful for guiding the design of the landing mechanism.

The seismic slope stability is most often evaluated by the pseudo-static limit analysis, in which the earthquake loading is simplified as static inertial loads acting in horizontal and/or vertical directions. The transient loading is represented by constant acceleration via the pseudostatic coefficients. The result of a pseudostatic analysis is governed by the selection of the value of the pseudostatic coefficient. However, selection of the value is very difficult and often done in an ad hoc manner without a sound physical reasoning. In addition, the maximum acceleration is commonly estimated from the design guideline, which cannot accurately estimate the dynamic response of a slope. There is a need to perform a 2D dynamic analysis to properly define the dynamic response characteristics. This paper develops the modified one-dimensional seismic site response analysis. The modified site response analysis adjusts the density of the layers to simulate the change in mass and weight of the layers of the slope with depth. Multiple analyses are performed at various locations within the slope to estimate the change in seismic response of the slope. The calculated peak acceleration profiles with depth from the developed procedure are compared to those by the two-dimensional analyses. Comparisons show that the two methods result in remarkable match.

To reduce attrition in drug development, it is crucial to consider the development and implementation of translational phenotypic assays as well as decipher diverse molecular mechanisms of action for new molecular entities. High-throughput fluorescence and confocal microscopes with advanced analysis software have simplified the simultaneous identification and quantification of various cellular processes through what is now referred to as high-content screening (HCS). HCS permits automated identification of modifiers of accessible and biologically relevant targets and can thus be used to detect gene interactions or identify toxic pathways of drug candidates to improve drug discovery and development processes. In this review, we summarize several HCS-compatible, biochemical, and molecular biology-driven assays, including immunohistochemistry, RNAi, reporter gene assay, CRISPR-Cas9 system, and protein-protein interactions to assess a variety of cellular processes, including proliferation, morphological changes, protein expression, localization, post-translational modifications, and protein-protein interactions. These cell-based assay methods can be applied to not only 2D cell culture but also 3D cell culture systems in a high-throughput manner.
Sub-cooling of cryogenic propellant by helium injection is one of the most effective
methods for suppressing bulk boiling and keeping sub-cooled liquid oxygen before
rocket launch. In order to design the cooling system, understanding of the limitations
of heat and mass transfer is required. In this paper, an analytical model for the helium
injection system is presented. This model's main feature is the representation of
bubbling system using finite-rate heat transfer and instantaneous mass transfer concept.
With this simplified approach, the effect of helium injection to liquid oxygen system
under several circumstances is examined. Experimental results along with simulations of
single bubble rising in liquid oxygen and bubbling system are presented with various
helium injection flow rates, and with change of oxygen chamber pressure.
Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. The method using flexible springs seems to be useful fur the practical design since its simplified model can represent the complex behaviors of pile groups efficiently. Parameter studies were performed far various pile group arrangements, pile spacings, end bearing conditions, and loading stages to analyze their effects on the lateral displacements, maximum pile bending stresses, and lateral stiffness of pile groups. Through the parameter studies, it was found that when lateral stiffness of pile groups was estimated by using three-dimensional analysis method (YSGroup), its complex behavior could be predicted better than other methods based on single pile analysis.
A new design methology is proposed to identify the structure and parameters of fuzzy model using PNN and a fuzzy inference method. The PNN is the extended structure of the GMDH(Group Method of Data Handling), and uses several types of polynomials such as linear, quadratic and cubic besides the biquadratic polynomial used in the GMDH. The FPNN(Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks) algorithm uses PNN(Polynomial Neural networks) structure and a fuzzy inference method. In the fuzzy inference method, the simplified and regression polynomial inference methods are used. Here a regression polynomial inference is based on consequence of fuzzy rules with a polynomial equations such as linear, quadratic and cubic equation. Each node of the FPNN is defined as fuzzy rules and its structure is a kind of neuro-fuzzy architecture. In this paper, we will consider a model that combines the advantage of both FPNN and PNN. Also we use the training and testing data set to obtain a balance between the approximation and generalization of process model. Several numerical examples are used to evaluate the performance of the our proposed model.
Codes EN 1993 and EN 1994 require to take into account actual joint characteristics in the global analysis. In order to implement the semi-rigid connection effects in frame design, knowledge of joint rotation characteristics ($M-{\phi}$ relationship), or at least three basic joint properties, namely the moment resistance $M_R$, the rotational stiffness $S_j$ and rotation capacity, is required. To avoid expensive experimental tests many methods for predicting joint parameters were developed. The paper presents a comprehensive analytical model that has been developed for predicting the moment resistance $M_R$, initial stiffness $S_{j.ini}$ and rotation capacity of the minor axis, composite, semi-rigid joint. This model is based on so-called component method included in EN 1993 and EN 1994. Comparison with experimental test results shows that a quite good agreement was achieved. A computer program POWZ containing proposed procedure were created. Based on the numerical simulation made with the use of this program and applying regression analysis, simplified equations for main joint properties were also developed.
