The techniques extract shape descriptors from 3D models and use these descriptors for indices for comparing shape similarities. Most similarity search techniques focus on comparisons of each individual 3D model from databases. However, our similarity search technique can compare not only each individual 3D model, but also partial shape similarities. The partial shape matching technique extends the user's query request by finding similar parts of 3D models and finding 3D models which contain similar parts. We have implemented an experimental partial shape-matching search system for 3D pagoda models, and preliminary experiments show that the system successfully retrieves similar 3D model parts efficiently.
The purpose of the study is to develop a synthetic method for generating arbitrary number of not the same but similar texture images. The method includes processes to extract basic shape elements from texture images originating in actual objects, to select them to reappear the image features and to arrange them in a image plane. The authors have already proposed the shape-pass type filter bank assuming that the sensual impression mainly depends on minute shapes existing in the texture images. By use of nine basic shape elements, namely black/white-roof, black/white-line, black/white-snake, black/white-pepper, and cliff, natural texture images originating in actual objects have been characterized by feature vectors in a nine dimensional space. To generate arbitrary number of similar texture images, minute shape pieces ...

This study develops an algorithm that automatically performs reverse engineering on three-dimensional (3D) sweeping shapes using a user's pre-defined feature templates and 3D point cloud data (PCD) of sweeping shapes. Existing methods extract 3D sweeping shapes by extracting points on a PCD cross section together with the center point in order to perform curve fitting and connect the center points. However, a drawback of existing methods is the difficulty of creating a 3D sweeping shape in which the user's preferred feature center points and parameters are applied. This study extracts shape features from cross-sectional points extracted automatically from the PCD and compared with pre-defined feature templates for similarities, thereby acquiring the most similar template cross-section. Fitting the most similar template cross-section to sweeping shape modeling makes the reverse engineering process automatic.
The purpose of this study is to infer the shape and change as auspicious symbolic meaning and figures of a peony pattern. For this study. I analyzed the example of a peony pattern, which is traditional Chinese pattern appeared on a ceramic and textile. The results of this study are as following. First, a peony has particular title, such as 'the king of flowers' and 'the most beautiful woman in country and the smell in heaven' originated in a verse of a poet at Dang's Dynasty. It is reputed to be the best of all flowers, representing beauty, and a beauty. Second, the basic meaning of a peony pattern used as auspicious pattern is prosperity and it has various meanings of it's similar kind through several auspicious objects and combination. Also, it was used for the purpose of adequating the desire of man's blessing mentality. Third, four kinds of characteristics of a peony pattern are as following. 1) A peony pattern has similar shape with 'Bosanghwamoon', which was used as a pattern at formerly period of peony flowers. It was used as realistic shape gave vividness to the characteristic of peony on the shape of 'Bosanghwamoon'. 2) 8-petaled, unique leaves and veins were described in detail by vivid sketching shape of real peony flower. 3) Laying stress on the characteristics of peony flower, which is large and magnificent, several folds petals were described abundantly by exaggerated shape or a shape of big honeycomb. And unique leaves were described realistically on these. 4) It was also expressed peculiar characteristic of peony flower composed of several pieces by weakened design shape.
Seven new species of genus Dysidea (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Dysideidae) are described from Jejudo Island and Geomundo Island, Korea. These new species are compared with other reported species in fibre structure and arrangement, and cored detritus. Dysidea reticulum n. sp. is similar to D. glavea in skeletal structure but differ in sponge shape. Dysidea simplex n. sp. is close to D. glavea with loosely arranged skeletal structure but fibres in this new species are not cored with large sands. Dysidea pyeongdaensis n. sp. is characterized by tube-like surface oscules open toward the sandy bottom. Dysidea capillus n. sp. is similar to D. dokdoensis in skeletal structure, but differs in long surface conules. Dysidea mukriensis n. sp. is close to D. corallina in distinct dense surface conules, but differs in sponge shape and skeletal structure. Dysidea membrana n. sp. is similar to D. sabulum in primary fibres cored with numerous large sands, but differs in sponge surface conules and secondary fibres. Dysidea chujaensis n. sp. is unique in the sponge shape and skeletal structure.
This paper deals with the problem of shape-based retrieval in time-series databases. The shape-based retrieval is defined as the operation that searches for the (sub)sequences whose shapes are similar to that of a given query sequence regardless of their actual element values. In this paper, we propose an effective and efficient approach for shape-based retrieval of subsequences. We first introduce a new similarity model for shape-based retrieval that supports various combinations of transformations such as shifting, scaling, moving average, and time warping. For efficient processing of the shape-based retrieval based on the similarity model, we also propose the indexing and query processing methods. To verify the superiority of our approach, we perform extensive experiments with the real-world S&P 500 stock data. The results reveal that our approach successfully finds all the subsequences that have the shapes similar to that of the query sequence, and also achieves significant speedup up to around 66 times compared with the sequential scan method.
Unlike former researches, this study for developing the caricature generator began observing the methods that other caricature experts have adopted. According to the observation, it seemed that experts tried to exaggerate characteristics of the target shape from other similar objects. When we are saying "This is similar to that," we give salience to their difference among the identical form groups. This study was to find the most similar geometry form to the target shape and then to transform its form through exaggeration. The research scope was restricted to exaggerate the outline shape of two-dimensional looped curve as a caricature form. For this, the author discussed the following: (a) organization method of four kinds of similar geometry form database, (b) search method to find the pertinent similar geometry form, (c) arrangement method for those searched data, and (d) method to exaggerate the target shape. Human faces and cars were selected as research categories to make the database. According to the survey over the transformed results, it was proved its possibility.
Four new nemourid species, Amphinemura rai n. sp., Amphinemura baei n. sp., Protonemura villosa n. sp., and Nemoura espera n. sp. are described and illustrated. Amphinemura rai n. sp. closely resembles Amphinemura tragula (Kimmins) externally, but differs from Amphinemura tragula by the projections on male terminalia and the shape of the female subgenital plate. Amphinemura baei n. sp. is similar to A. bulla Shimizu in body color, size, and structure of male and female terminalia, but distinguished by the ventral sclerites of epiproct, the knobs on the sides of the epiproct, and the shape of paraprocts. Protonemura villosa n. sp. is similar to p. hotakana Ueno in body color, size, and the structure of terminalia, but distinguished by the epiproctal flagellum and ventral sclerite, the shape of the tenth tergum. Finally, Nemoura espera n.sp. is close to Nemoura alabeli Zhilt-zova In appearance, but differs by the shape and location of the ventral and dorsal sclerites of the epiproct.
Four new species of genus Scalarispongia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) are described from Jejudo Island, Korea. These new species of Scalarispongia are compared with 14 reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure. Scalarispongia songakensis n. sp. is similar to S. lenis in sponge shape but differs in skeletal structure and meshes are not divided into two sections. The length of secondary fibres between primary fibres of this new species is much longer than S. lenis'. Scalarispongia radicula n. sp. is resembles S. songakensis in sponge shape, but this new species has pseudo-tertiary fibres at the sponge base. Scalarispongia maraensis n. sp. is very similar to S. subjiensis in sponge shape but primary fibres of this new species are not simple because fibres have wide webbing. Scalarispongia massa n. sp. is characterized by the large mass sponge shape and numerous open oscules form a long ling on the ridge of the sponge.
When the Langer modification is applied to Coulomb potential, the standard WKB quantization yields an exact energy spectrum for the potential. This Langer modification has been known to be related to the centrifugal term appearing in Coulomb potential. But we find that a similar modification exists for all translationally shape invariant potentials without referring to the centrifugal term. The characteristic shape of the potentials accounts for the generalized version of Langer modification that makes the WKB quantization valid for all translationally shape invariant potentials.
