  • Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests proposed by one of the authors, cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from cyclic and post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for cyclic and post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils and initial static shear stress (ISSS) was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) liquefaction strength ratio of fine-grained soils decreases with decreasing plasticity index and increasing ISSS; (ii) plasticity index and ISSS did not markedly influence relation between equivalent cyclic stiffness and shear strain relations; (iii) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less the strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalcies excess pore water pressure (NEPWP); (iv) stiffness ratio of plastic silt has large activity decrease rapidly with increasing excess pore water pressure; and (v) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.

  • The vacuum consolidation method which was proposed by Kjellman in 1952 has been studied extensively and used successfully since early 1980 throughout the world, especially in East and Southeast Asia. Despite the increased successful use, different opinions still exist, especially in connection to distribution of vacuum with depth and time in vertical drains and in soil during preloading of soft ground. Porewater pressure measurements from actual cases of field vacuum and vacuum-fill preloading as well as laboratory studies have been examined. It is concluded that (a) a vacuum magnitude equal to that in the drainage blanket remains constant with depth and time within the vertical drains, (b) as expected, vacuum does not develop at the same rate within the soil at different depths; however, under ideal conditions vacuum is expected to become constant with depth in soil after the end of primary consolidation, and (c) there exists a possibility of internal leakage in vacuum intensity at some sublayers of a soft clay and silt deposit. A case history of vacuum loading with sufficient subsurface information is analyzed using the ILLICON procedure.

  • At five stations in Gyeongan River, a tributary of Lake Paldang, physicochemical and biological environmental factors of water, particulate matters, and sediments were investigated biweekly from April 11 to December 22 in 2001. The studied area was characterized as a stream-lake system. The system is primarily referred to a place where the environmental factors had considerably changed depending on the amount of precipitation. As a result, the river turned out to be strongly eutrophicated. Also, some characteristics of the water and the particulate matters at midstream such as average concentrations of conductivity, nutrients, and chlorophyll $\alpha$ were higher than the characteristics of up and down-stream. However, the concentrations of organic matters and ratio of clay and silt of the midstream were determined to be higher than up and down-stream sediments. As the result of the factor analysis, 4 major different patterns for environmental factors are found from samples of water, particulate matters, and sediments.

  • Comparisons of the physico-chemical properties of earthworm(Lumbricus terrestris) soil casts and top soil of red pine forests in a limestone area were carried out. The casts production durign August and September in 1990 amounted to 6∼7t/ha. The particle of top soil and casts ranged 40∼50% and 10∼20% for sand , 25∼30% and 30∼35% for silt, and 20∼25% and 55∼65% clay, respectively. Significant difference in pH value was not observed between casts and top soil. The casts had 1.4times of organic matter, 1.5times of N, 1.8times of available P, 2times of exchangeable K, 1.3times of exchangeable Ca, and 1.6times of exchangeable Mg than the top 10cm of soil did. Earthworms have altered the soil texture and increased nutrient availability through production of the soil casts in this limestone area.

  • This report was investigated on the soil and mineral nutrient erosions in comparison among the vegetation floors of M isranthus sisensis, Arternisia stelleriana, Rhododendron mucronula turn, Zoysia ja-ponira and Pinus deusitlora communities and the naked soil on Mt. Keum-hak in Cheolwon-Koon, The erosion of clay, silt, fine sand and coarse sand of the surface soils under the Z. japonira grass-land was far less then those of M. sinensis, A. stelleriana, R. murronulatum and P. densiflora com-munities and the naked soil, The loss of mineral nutrients due to the soil erosion was the lowest level in the Z. japonira grassland and the highest level in the P. densiflora forest and the naked soil, respectively.

  • This study was performed in two ways, which are 'Before' 'After' carrying out trench search through GPR which is called 'Non Destructive Geophysical' to the expected area where the remains of historic interest could be distributed within the construction site from Dae-gu to Busan. As a result, the layer containing gravel and sand has more irregular specular surface then others containing silt and clay. And, this paper, irregular specular surfaces of prominence and depression patter appeared. After performing trench search, verified that the site yield dolmens and lots of stone implements.

  • Sub-bottom profile were conducted in Chungju Regulation Lake by use of ground penetrating radar(GPR). The survey area covers approximately 1,000,000 $m^2$ and total survey line length is about 5km and more. GPR surveys with GPS system were made across and transverse direction of the lake. From the survey results of GPR, it could be possible to distinguish the gravel and/or sand dominant bed from silt and/or clay material dominant bed.

  • Alluvium is sedimentary stratum and composed of gravel, sand, silt, clay. Permeability of alluvium is the higher. If alluvium have lots of aquifer, will be of great use heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Alluvium aquifer contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. Also geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer reduce expenses than general geothermal heat pump, because geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer make use of single well. In this study geothermal heat pump using alluvium aquifer was installed and tested for a building. The heat pump capacity is 30USRT. Temperature of ground water is in $12{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of the water is as good as living water. The heat pump cooling COP is 4.4 ~ 4.7. The system cooling COP is 3.25 ~ 3.6. This performance is as good as BHE type ground source heat pump.

  • The study area is filled up by alluvium which can be classified into lower and upper beds by the facies of deposits and their degree of weathering. The lower bed is not of marine but of fluvial. The upper bed is mainly composed of clay and silt or fine sand beds col-ored dark or dark gray which are of neritic or brackish yielding mollusca fossils. The oyster(Crassostrea ariakensis) obstained from the depth of 3m below the present sea level in the upper bed was dated at 4,100 110Y.B.P. and the veneridae(Meretrix lamarck) 1m height above the present delta plain in the old sand bar was dated at 1,700 85Y,B,P. It is therfore concluded that the study area a small kern col of terrestri-al basin prior to postglacial age had experienced the Holocene transgression. Consequently the study area is considered to have been progressively formed under neritic or brackish circumstance before 1,700Y.B.P.
