Highly plastic clays in their normally consolidated states are not always linear but are concave downwards. Thus their compression index deceases with the increase of consolidation pressure. The $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ curves of plastic or non-plastic silty clays are not linear but are convex upwards. In this paper, consolidation tests were conducted with several undisturbed field soils of Korea south coast and their $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are not always linear. In case of using Butterfield's method(liquid limit 50~100%), ${\ln}{\upsilon}-{\ln}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are linear. But some undisturbed samples which have void ratio over 2.24, liquid limit over 100% and plasticity index over 60% are not linear. In results of consolidation tests with remolded samples which contain silt(fly ash) contents of 90% has compression index increasing with the increase in consolidation pressure.

Soil management for orchard depends on the effects of soil microbial activities. The present study evaluated the soil microbial community of 25 orchard (5 sites for sandy loam, 7 sites for silt loam, and 13 sites for loam) in Gyeongnam Province by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) method. The average values for 25 orchard soil samples were $270nmol\;g^{-1}$ of total FAMEs, $72nmol\;g^{-1}$ of total bacteria, $34nmol\;g^{-1}$ of Gram-negative bacteria, $34nmol\;g^{-1}$ of Gram-positive bacteria, $6nmol\;g^{-1}$ of actinomycetes, $49nmol\;g^{-1}$ of fungi, and $7nmol\;g^{-1}$ of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. In addition, silt loam soils had significantly low ratio of cy17:0 to $16:1{\omega}7c$ and cy19:0 to $18:1{\omega}7c$ compared with those of loam soils (p < 0.05), indicating that microbial activity increased. The average soil microbial communities in the orchard soils were 26.7% of bacteria, 17.9% of fungi, 12.6% of Gram-negative bacteria, 12.5% of Gram-positive bacteria, 2.5% of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and 2.2% of actinomycetes. The soil microbial community of Gram-negative bacteria in silt loam soils was significantly higher than those of sandy loam and loam soils (p < 0.05).
Recent investigations into earthquake-induced damage have reported that liquefaction may take place on not only sands but also fine-contained soils or non-plastic silts. Although not a few study has been performed to understand the liquefaction of sands, relatively little effort has been devoted to improving our understanding of the liquefaction characteristics for non-plastic soils. Given that liquefaction strength is largely associated to shear wave velocity, bender element test as well as direct simple shear test is employed to examine the stiffness of non-plastic silt more precisely. Through the soil tests, the stiffness of non-plastic silts from the bender element tests is identified as slightly greater than that from the direct simple shear test. Further, the stiffness of non-plastic silts appears to be smaller than that of clay.

This study was conducted to compare the plant growth and fruit quality of blueberries grown in different soil textures of Korea, in order to utilize the results for stable production and soil improvement. Rabbiteye blueberry cultivars 'Tifblue' and 'Baldwin' were planted and grown for three years from 2013 in wagner pot (1 $2000a^{-1}$) in a greenhouse of Namhae Sub-station, Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science. The plants were grown in four soil textures, sand, sandy loam, loam and silt loam, and nutrient uptake and growth characteristics of plants were investigated. Leaf nitrogen and phosphorus contents of two cultivars grown in different soil textures ranged between 8.6 to $10.5gkg^{-1}$, which was lower than appropriate level for rabbiteye blueberry. However, the contents of potassium, calcium and magnesium in leaves were appropriate levels as $2.29{\sim}3.62gkg^{-1}$, $4.46{\sim}5.46gkg^{-1}$ and $1.45{\sim}2.12gkg^{-1}$, respectively. Nitrogen and phosphate contents in leaves were higher in the two cultivars grown in silt loam soil. There was no significant difference in plant volume and root dry weight among four soil textures in two cultivars. However, dry weight of leaves and branches were highest in loam soil. Fruit production was highest in loam and silt loam soil in two cultivars, showing negative correlation with the amount of sand in soil. However, sugar and acidity showed no correlation with sand content in soil. These results show the limit to the blueberry growth in soil that has no nutrient holding capacity; however, most of Korean soils that have good nutrient holding capacity can produce competitive fruits if the drainage is improved.
Asian dust (Hwangsa) deposited on the surface of the Korean Peninsula is difficult to recognize their existence in mountainous terrain undergoing active erosion and weathering. This study examined Asian dust sediments mixed in soils by analysing clay mineralogy, mineral composition, and microtextures of fine silt (< 20 ㎛) in the alkali feldspar granite area of Seoraksan. The fine silt was composed of detrital particles derived from bedrocks, Asian dust sediments, and their weathering products. Clay minerals of 2:1 structural type, chlorite, amphibole, epidote, and Ca-bearing plagioclase were identified as eolian mineral particles. During the weathering of the bedrock composed of quartz and alkali feldspars, albite was partially weathered to produce small amounts of gibbsite and kaolin minerals. Hydroxy-Al interlayered clay minerals were formed by the exchange and fixation of polynuclear Al cationic species into the interlayers of expandable 2:1 clay minerals dominated by illite-smectite series clay minerals. Contribution of Asian dust to the fine silt of soils was estimated around 70% on the basis of total contents of 2:1 phyllosilicates.
In this study, inverse analysis was performed on the bi-directional axial compressive load test conducted on drilled shafts. And the bearing capacities were analyzed by numerical analysis of various pile tip ground conditions of silt clay, silt sand, sand silt, sand gravel, weathered rock, and soft rock. The bearing capacities were analyzed using the P-S method, the Davisson method, and the allowable sttlement of 25.4 mm. The minimum allowable bearing capacities analyzed by three methods were found to be 19.64 MN ~ 24.96 MN. At this time, the base resistances were sharing a 2% ~ 12% of a head load, shaft resistance were shared 88% ~ 98% of the head load. The greater the strength of pile tip was found to increase the allowable bearing capacity. However, the difference between the maximum allowable bearing capacity and the minimum allowable bearing capacity was 5.32 MN, and the increase in the allowable bearing capacity was only 27% depending on the pile tip.

Understanding the behavior of soil under cyclic loading conditions is essential for assessing its response to seismic events and potential liquefaction. This study investigates the effect of non-plastic fines content (FC) on excess pore pressure generation in medium-density sand-silt mixtures subjected to strain-controlled cyclic direct simple shear (CDSS) tests. The investigation is conducted by analyzing excess pore pressure (EPP) ratios and the number of cycles to liquefaction (Ncyc-liq) under varying shear strain levels and FC values. The study uses Jumunjin sand and silica silt with FC values ranging from 0% to 40% and shear strain levels of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1.0%. The findings indicate that the EPP ratio increases rapidly during loading cycles, with higher shear strain levels generating more EPP and requiring fewer cycles to reach liquefaction. At 1.0% and 0.5% shear strain levels, FC has a limited effect on Ncyc-liq. However, at a lower shear strain level of 0.2%, increasing FC from 0 to 10% reduces Ncyc-liq from 42 to 27, and as FC increases further, Ncyc-liq also increases. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the behavior of soil under cyclic loading conditions. It highlights the significance of shear strain levels and FC values in excess pore pressure generation and liquefaction susceptibility.

This study is focused on the cultivation of seedlings and cuttings of roundleaf chastetree(Vitex rotundifolia L. f.) according to the sorts of soil and fertilization methods. The results are summarized as follows: When roundleaf chastetree seedlings(aged 1-0) and cuttings(aged 1-0) were cultivated in three different kinds of soil- sand, granite soil, and yellow silt- without any fertilization, 70% of the seedlings survived in sand and granite soil, and 35% did in yellow silt; 90% of the cuttings survived in granite soil and 80% did in sand and yellow silt. The general growth of both seedlings and cuttings was good in granite soil, and sand but relatively inferior in yellow silt. Seedlings showed good stem growth while cuttings had fine root growth. In case of cultivation of seedlings with different kinds and quantities of fertilizer adjusted and with granite soil as basic soil, seedlings and cuttings survived in the experimental section where only the organic fertilizer was used as basic fertilization; in contrast, seedlings grown in the experimental section were all dead where both inorganic and liquefied fertilizer were used. Cuttings showed considerably higher survival rates than seedlings at the experimental fertilization section; particularly, the survival rate of cuttings was twice as much as that of seedlings at the experimental section with low fertilization. This study results revealed that cuttings are desirable than seedlings in general rootage, growth, adaptability to soil, and cuttings have lower demand for soil fertility in time of growing roundleaf chastetree saplings.
In order to find out the effects of soil conditioner treatment on the water movement in sandy loam and silt loam soils were treated with two different kinds of soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen 0.4% or hydrophillic Uresol 0.6%, and the changes of wetting angle (soil-water contact angle), penetrability and diffusivity were measured. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Uresol 0.6% treatment decreased the wetting angle of sandy loam more than $10^{\circ}$, but there was no big difference in silt loam. 2. Sandy loam soil was changed to almost hydrophobic and the wetting angle of silt loam soil was increased to $84.9^{\circ}$ as compared to $76.0^{\circ}$ of untreated soil by Bitumen 0.4% treatment. 3. By Uresol treatment, penetrability of sandy loam was doubled but there was not difference in silt loam, and it was decreased to half in two soils by Bitumen treatment. 4. A significant positive correlation between penetrability and the cosine of wetting angle was recognized. 5. Soil water diffusivity was greatly changed by soil conditioner treatment, and the big differences were appeared at lower soil moisture content.
This study was carried out in order to determine the remediation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) compounds for non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) using in-situ air sparging (IAS) / vapor extraction (VE) with the marine sediments of Mandol, Hajeon, Sangam and Busan, South Korea. Surface sediment of Mandol area had sand characteristics (average particle size, 1.789 ${\Phi}$), and sandy silt characteristics (average particle size, 5.503 ${\Phi}$), respectively. Sangam surface sediment had silt characteristics (average particle size, 5.835 ${\Phi}$). Sediment characteristics before experiment in the Busan area showed clay characteristics (average particle size, 8.528 ${\Phi}$). TPHs level in the B1 column of Mandol, Hajeon, Sangam, and Busan sediments were 2,459, 6,712, 4,348, and 14,279 ppm. B2 (3 L/min) to B5 (5 L/min) columns reduced 99.5% to 100.0% of TCE and 93.2% to 100.0% of PCE. Removal rates of TCE, PCE, and BTEX are closely correlated (0.90-0.99) with particle sizes and organic carbon concentrations. However, TPHs (0.76) and benzene (0.71) showed the poorer but moderate correlations with the same parameters.
