  • Langasite({{{{ { La}_{ 3} {Ga }_{5 } {SiO }_{14 } , LGS}}}}) powder was prepared by a polymerized complex method based on the Pechini-type reaction. A mixed solution of ethylene glycol(EG), cotric acid(CA), lanthanum, gallium and silicon ions, with a molar ratio of EG:CA:La:Ga:Si=100:25:3:5:1, was polymerzed to from a transparent resin, which was used as a precursor for the synthesis of LGS. X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns indicated that the LGS phase could be formed by the heat-treatment in air at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs

  • The small material removal rate of elastic emission machinong (EEM) becomes a serious problem due to using fine powder particles for obtaining finished of high quality. If a cylindrical polyurethane-wheel is used as a tool for accelerating powder particles, the efficiency of machining may be increased through enlarging the machining regionand increasing the surface velocity of the wheel. If these analyicl results are compared with experimental ones, characteristics of EEM using polyurethan-wheel can be clarified. In this study, effects of EEM using cylindrical polyurethane-wheel on the surface roughness and the material removal rate were verified through polishing of the brittle material under various conditions. The high-efficient polishing of silicon wafer has been also carried out using this method.

  • Graphite can be classified into natural graphite from mines and artificial graphite. Due to its outstanding properties such as light weight, thermal resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, and high-temperature strength, artificial graphite is used across various industries in powder form and bulk form. Artificial graphite of powder form is usually used as anode materials for secondary cells, while artificial graphite of bulk form is used in steelmaking electrode bars, nuclear reactor moderators, silicon ingots for semiconductors, and manufacturing equipment. This study defines artificial graphite as bulk graphite, and provides an overview of bulk graphite manufacturing, including isotropic and anisotropic materials, molding methods, and heat treatment.

  • In order to clarify the wear resistance as cutting tools, the effect of oxygen addition on oxidation behavior of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics with 5 mass% $Y_2O_3$ and 2 or 4 mass% $Al_2O_3$ was investigated by performing oxidation tests in air at $1300^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ and cutting performance tests. From test results, we could conclude that the mechanical properties of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics depending on oxygen introduction are much effective on cutting performance improvements of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics.

  • In this study, we attempt to synthesize the cordierite from the reaction of fly-ash, alumina, silicon dioxide, and magnesia powders. For the purpose of air purification, the honeycomb filter with porous cordierite was fabricated from the combination of synthetic cordierite and pore forming agent. Fabricated porous cordierite honeycomb was prepared with high porosity (58%), and good compressive strength (69MPa).

  • Innovative SMC with low iron loss was made from iron powders with evaporated MgO insulation coating. The coating had greater heat-resistance than conventional phosphatic insulation coating, which enabled stress relieving annealing at higher temperature. Magnetic properties of toroidal samples (OD35mm,ID25mm, t5) were examined. The iron loss at 50Hz for Bm = 1.5T was lower 50% of conventional SMC and was almost the same with silicon iron laminations(t0.35). It became clear that MgO insulation coating has enough heat resistance and adhesiveness to powdersurface to obtain innovative SMC with low iron loss.

  • There have two kinds of defects, planar defects and vertical defects which were called micropipes in SiC bulk crystals grown by a sublimation method. We could decrease these defects by adding a little piece of Si in the SiC powder or using Ta cylinder in the crucible. so were report the dependence of these defects in a wafer on silicon/carbon ratio in this paper. The chemical species sublimed from SiC powder is affected by carbon from the graphite wall of the crucible. It is important to control the chemical species on the substrate.

  • Processing techniques for producing microcellular silicon carbide, mullite, and cordierite ceramics have been developed by a reaction method that incorporates a polysiloxane and reactive fillers. The techniques developed in this study offer substantial flexibility for producing microcellular ceramics whereby cell size, cell density, degree of interconnectivity, composition, and porosity can all be effectively controlled. It is demonstrated that the adjustment of filler composition enables the possibility of tailoring the composition and properties of the microcellular ceramics. The present results suggest that the proposed novel processing techniques are suitable for the manufacture of microcellular ceramics with high morphological uniformity.

  • Laser pyrolysis is a very suitable method for the synthesis of a wide range of nanoparticles. A pilot unit based on this process has been recently developed at CEA. This paper reports results showing the possibility to produce SiC and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles at rates of respectively 1 and 0.2 kg/h and also the possibility to adjust the mean grain size of the particles and their structure by changing the laser intensity and reactants flow rates. First tests of liquid recovery have been also successfully performed to limit the risks of nanoparticles dissemination in the environement during their recovery.

  • NMR study has been used for measuring precise quantity of the amorphous phase in the $Si_3N_4$powder. Care must be taken to allow the $^{29}$Si nuclear spin system to fully relax between pulses in order to make the signals proportional to the number of nuclei in each phase. $^{29}$Si MAS spectrum was decomposed into the three spectra of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, and amorphous $Si_3N_4$assuming pseudo-Voigt function. Moreover, the Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction data was performed to measure quantity of crystalline phases as $\alpha/\beta$ ratio.
