An optimum synthetic condition was studied for the MCS used as a silicone monomer. The contact mixture was made from the four component catalyst system($CuCl/ZnCl_2/Sn/Cd$) and silicon particles. The contact mass was used for a series of experiments with methyl chloride, which were designed and done to explore the optimum condition for MCS synthesis by an experimental design method. The optimum temperature and MeCl flow rate, which were obtained using 50g contact mass at 60rpm and 1 atm, were in the range of $300-305^{\circ}C$ and of 70-80ccm. Also a continuous run was performed to confirm the conditions. The results showed that the average reaction rate and selectivity were 170(g-MCS/hr.kg-Si) and 0.05 respectively at 67% conversion of MeCl and 92% silicon utilization rate. Also the parameters of overall reaction rate equation and a total pressure were estimated on the basis of the results of the continuous run.

Low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) was applied to characterize aerosol particles collected at Gosan in Jeju island during an IOP (intensive observation period) for an international ACE-Asia project in April, 2001. Various types of atmospheric particles such as organics, carbon-rich, aluminosilicates, silicon oxide, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and ammonium sulfate were observed. The reacted sea salt particles such as sodium nitrate were the most abundantly encountered, but original sea salt particles were rarely observed. Since the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide quantitative information on the chemical composition of aerosol particles, many different particle types on the basis of their chemical compositions were observed and identified. In this study, it is demonstrated that the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide detailed information on the chemical compositions for the aerosol particles collected for six consecutive days in April, 2001, at Gosan super-site.
New poly(arylene-ethynylene)s with silicon-containing ferrocene moiety in the polymer main chain were synthesized via the C-C bond forming reactions of 1,1´-bis(ethynyldimethylsilyl)ferrocene and various aromatic dihalides in high yields. The aromatic dihalides include 1,4-dibromobenzene, 4,4´-dibromobiphenyl, 9,10-dibromoanthracene, 2,5-dibromopyridine, 2,5-dibromothiophene, and 2,6-diiodo-4-nitroaniline. The polymer structures and properties were characterized by such instrumental methods as NMR $(^1H-,\;^{13}C-,\;and\;^{29}Si-)$, IR, UV-visible spectroscopies and TGA/DSC. The spectral data indicated that the present polymers have the regular alternating structure of 1,1´-bis(ethynyldimethylsilyl)ferrocenylene and arylene units. The resulting polymers were completely soluble in such organic solvents as methylene chloride, chloroform, benzene, chlorobenzene, and THF. The thermal behaviors of the resulting polymers were examined.
The study was undertaken to provide information on the efficacy of sanitizers against bacteria with and without organic road dried on to food contact surfaces using the surface test method which EU and USA are currently implementing as one of their official test methods. Escherochia coli ATCC 10536 or Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 was inoculated on to food contact surfaces, such as stainless steel, polypropylene, and silicon, which was then treated with benzalkonium chloride, sodium hypochlorite, or ethanol as a sanitizer for 5minutes at $20^{\circ}C$. Results indicated that the type of surface had little affected the efficacy of various sanitizers. In addition, 200 ppm of benzalkonium chloride or 200 ppm of sodium hypochlorite showed no definite reduction of bacterial populations in the present of organic load, while 40% ethanol showed reduction to $4\;cfu\;\log_{10}$/carrier or more in viable count in the organic load.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the loess dyeability of soybean fabric using loess as colorants. Recent days, various textile products such as inner wears, sheets and interior goods are manufactured using materials dyed with loess emphasizing its improved metabolism, anti-bacterial, deodorizing properties, and far infrared ray emissions. Soybean fabric was dyed with loess solution according to concentration of loess, dyeing temperature and dyeing time. To improve washing fastness, soybean fabric and dyed soybean fabric with loess were mordanted by mordanting agents such as sodium chloride(NaCl), Acetic acid(CH3COOH) and Aluminium Potassium Sulfate(AlK(SO4)2·12H2O). Dyeability and color characteristics of dyed soybean fabric were obtained by CCM observation. Particle size distribution of loess, the dyeability(K/S) of soybean fabric, morphology and washing durability of loess dyed soybean fabric were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; Mean average diameter of loess was 1.08µm. The main components of loess used in this study were silicon dioxide(SiO2), aluminium oxide(Al2O3), and iron oxide(Fe2O3). The content of these three component was above 75 weight %. The dyeability of soybean fabric was increased gradually with increasing concentration of loess. The optimum dyeing temperature and dyeing time were 90℃ and 60minutes expectively. The fastness to washing according to concentration of loess and mordanting method indicated good grade result as more than 4 degree in all conditions.
This study was performed using samples collected at Myungryundong and at Reservoirs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of water quality between tap and raw water, and to analyse drinking water quality by Fe, Zn from corroded galvanized steel pipe. Results were as follows 1. The older the pipe was, the higher the concentration of Ferrum and Zinc was (t-test : p<0.05). Ferrum and Zinc also exceeded the limits in the older galvanized steel pipe. I think that this comes from the corrosion of pipe. 2. Mercury, Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Chomium, Argentum and Aurum not detected in raw water were not detected in tap water. Cobalt, Bismuth and Molybudenum detected in raw water were not detected in tap water. I think that this comes from the quality of raw water, the result of water treatment and the improbability of detection of above metals in water delivery system. 3. Silicon measured 2.4698ppm in raw water, but it ranged from 0.4769ppm to 1.982 ppm in tap water. Manganese measured 0.0638ppm in raw water, but it ranged from 0.0026ppm to 0.0198ppm in 17cases(31%) out of 55samples in tap water. I think that this comes from the water treatment. 4. Aluminium not detected in raw water was found in 17 cases (31%) out of the samples (55cases). It may be considered as the use of coagulants $Al_2(SO_4)_3$. $18H_2O$ and PAC (Poly Aluminium Chloride). The concentration of copper in tap water was much higher in 2 cases(3.6%) out of the samples(55) than that of copper in raw water.
I think that this may come from the use of ${CuSO}_4$, the preventive of algae growth, and the result of chlorination, but further study must be necoessary to support the proof.
To elucidate the physiological responses of rice plants to the essential mineral silicon (Si), we assessed the effects of treatments with Si, nitrogen ($NH_4NO_3$; ammonium nitrate), and calcium ($CaCl_2$; calcium chloride), independently or in combination on mineral uptake rates and levels of the hormones abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin ($GA_1$) and jasmonic acid (JA). We found that nitrogen and calcium uptake was inhibited by Si application. However, solo application of nitrogen or calcium did not affect Si uptake. Compared to the untreated plants, the application of Si, $NH_4NO_3$ or $CaCl_2$ increased the endogenous hormone levels in treated plants. In particular, the concentrations of $GA_1$ and JA increased significantly after the application of Si or $NH_4NO_3$. The level of $GA_1$ observed after a treatment (solo or combine) with Si, and $NH_4NO_3$ was higher than that of the control. By contrast, independent application of $CaCl_2$ or a combined treatment with Si and $CaCl_2$ did not alter $GA_1$ levels. The highest level of $GA_1$ was present in plants given a combination treatment of Si and $NH_4NO_3$. This effect was observed at all time points (6 h, 12 h and 24 h). Endogenous JA contents were higher in all treatments than the control. In particular, a combination treatment with Si and $NH_4NO_3$ significantly increased the JA levels in plants compared to other treatments at all time points. A small increase in JA levels was observed after 6 h in plants given the $CaCl_2$ treatment. However, JA levels did not differ between plants given a $CaCl_2$ treatment and controls after 12 h or 24 h of exposure. We conclude that treatment with $CaCl_2$ alone does not affect endogenous JA levels in the short term. Endogenous ABA contents did not show any differences among the various treatments.

This study reviewed the usability of sludge, a material that is additionally created when polysilicon (a solar light material) is produced, as the raw material for cement clinker. It was evaluated that when cement clinker is produced, the chloric component of polysilicon acted as a mineralizer in the firing process. In addition, the physical features of the produced cement were measured. The setting time of the produced cement was reduced as the amount of content of polysilicon sludge increased. Such results were drawn because the chloric component acted as hydration accelerator and enhanced the dissolution of calcium hydroxide that was formed by hydration of $C_3S$. Furthermore, for such reason, on the day 1, the compression strength of mortar increased as the content of polysilicon sludge increased. In day 3, 7, and 28, the tendency in which the compression strength increasing up to 5% of the amount of added polysilicon sludge was shown. It is because when clinker was produced, the chloric component increased the amount of $C_3S$ mineral created, thus enhancing the compression strength after day 3.
This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of n-6(corn oil) & n-3(fish oil) fatty acids on infarction size and the cerebral activities of antioxidant enzyme in rat focal brain ischemia model. Weaning Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with either corn oil supplemented diet(COD, 14% corn oil) or fish oil supplemented diet(FOD, 14% menhaden oil) for 6 weeks. The right middle cerebral artery was occluded for 2 hours with a silicon rubber coated nylon surgical thread. After 24 hours of recirculation, the rats were sacrificed and brain sections were photographed using CCD camera after staining with 2, 3, 5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride for 60 minutes in room temperature. The infarcted area was measured and the volume of infarction was calculated. Catalase(CAT), superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities, and fatty acid composition in the brain were also measured. The total and corrected infarction volumes were not significantly different between FOD and COD group. The docosagexaenoic acid(DHA) and DHA content/arachidonic acid(AA) ratio of the cerebral cortex, an index of defense against lipid oxidation, were significantly increased in FOD group compared to those of COD group(p<0.05). In the left cortex(non-infarction side) as well as the right cortex(infarction side) of FOD group, CAT and Cu/Zn SOD activities were higher than those of the COD group(p<0.05). However, CAT and Cu/Zn SOD activities were not significantly different between the left cortex(non-infarction side) and the right cortex(infarction side) of both FOD and COD group. GPx activities were also not significantly different between two groups. Our results demonstrate that the brain infarction size in FOD and COD were not significantly different. However, cerebral lipid composition and antioxidant enzyme activities in FOD and COD group were different. Fish oil, a source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) and corn oil, that of n-6(PUFA) may have a protective effect against oxidative stress induced via different mechanisms.
One-dimensional cubic phase silicon carbide nanowires (${\beta}$-SiC NWs) were efficiently synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) with mixtures containing Si powders and nickel chloride hexahydrate $(NiCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O)$ in an alumina boat with a carbon source of methane $(CH_4)$ gas. SEM images are shown that the growth temperature (T) of $1,300^{\circ}C$ is not enough to synthesize the SiC NWs owing to insufficient thermal energy for melting down a Si powder and decomposing the methane gas. However, the SiC NWs could be synthesized at T>$1,300^{\circ}C$ and the most efficient temperature for growth of SiC NWs is T=$1,400^{\circ}C$. The synthesized SiC NWs have the diameter with an average range between 50~150 nm. Raman spectra clearly revealed that the synthesized SiC NWs are forming of a cubic phase (${\beta}$-SiC). Two distinct peaks at 795 and $970 cm^{-1}$ in Raman spectra of the synthesized SiC NWs at T=$1,400^{\circ}C$ represent the TO and LO mode of the bulk ${\beta}$-SiC, respectively. XRD spectra are also supported to the Raman spectra resulting in the strongest (111) peaks at $2{\Theta}=35.7^{\circ}$, which is the (111) plane peak position of 3C-SiC. Moreover, the gas flow rate of 300 sccm for methane is the optimal condition for synthesis of a large amount of ${\beta}$-SiC NW without producing the amorphous carbon structure shown at a high methane flow rate of 800 sccm. TEM images are shown two kinds of the synthesized ${\beta}$-SiC NWs structures. One is shown the defect-free ${\beta}$-SiC NWs with a (111) interplane distance of 0.25 nm, and the other is the stacking-faulted ${\beta}$-SiC NWs. Also, TEM images exhibited that two distinct SiC NWs are uniformly covered with $SiO_2$ layer with a thickness of less 2 nm.
