EMA-co-DAMA were synthesized from 2-diethylaminoethyl metacrylate and ethylhexyl metacrylate in acrylmonomer. To facilitate water emulsification, acrylic copolymer was cationized by acetic acid to produce acetated acrylic copolymer. The structures of the synthesized copolymer and acetated copolymers were confirmed by IR, NMR, and molecular weight was measure by GPC, and C.H.N elemental analysis. Acetated acrylic copolymers were perfectly emulsified in water and showed increased emulsion stability. Polymer dispersion for cement modifier[(PDCM-PED) water proof agent of cement for concrete in building construction] was prepared by blending of the guaternized acrylic copolymer syndisized above, sodium silicate, sodium gluconate and oleic acid emulsion. The result with prepared polymer dispersion of cement modifier was examined, and it was found that excellent waterprooffing effect ; Water permeability ratio is 0.50 under the water pressure of $100g/cm^2$ and 0.60 under $3kg/cm^2$, and water absorption ratio is $0.42{\sim}0.50$ and $1.0{\sim}1.02$ compressive strength ratio at mixed of water/PDCM-PED is 50 times.

Layered silicate clay montmorillonite (MMT) has been used in nanocomposite coating to improve corrosion protection by reinforcing the barrier property. The better dispersion of MMT in the coating produces a higher barrier effect. Pretreatment with MMT could favor the delamination of clay platelets, facilitating MMT dispersion in the coating. In the present work, a montmorillonite/silica (MMT/Si) composite was prepared by the in situ sol-gel method. x-ray diffraction measurements and field-emission scanning electron microscopy observations showed silica crystal formation and increased basal spacing between the MMT platelets. Composite MMT/Si particles were introduced in an epoxy resin to reinforce the corrosion protection of the coating applied on the AA2024 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to characterize the protective property of the coating. The results demonstrated the high barrier effect of the coating containing 5 wt% of MMT/Si. Adhesion evaluation after a salt spray test exhibited a high adherence to the epoxy coating containing MMT/Si.

We demonstrated the sensitivity of optically active single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a diameter below 1 nm that were homogeneously dispersed in cement composites under a mechanical load. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was selected as the dispersing agent to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of SWCNTs in an aqueous solution, and the dispersion state of the SWCNTs were characterized using various optical tools. It was found that the addition of a large amount of DNA prohibited the structural evolution of calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate hydrate. Based on the in-situ Raman and X-ray diffraction studies, it was evident that hydrophilic functional groups within the DNA strongly retarded the hydration reaction. The optimum amount of DNA with respect to the cement was found to be 0.05 wt%. The strong Raman signals coming from the SWCNTs entrapped in the cement composites enabled us to understand their dispersion state within the cement as well as their interfacial interaction. The G and G' bands of the SWCNTs sensitively varied under mechanical compression. Our results indicate that an extremely small amount of SWCNTs can be used as an optical strain sensor if they are homogeneously dispersed within cement composites.

Concerns on environmental waste problems caused by non-biodegradable petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials as well as consumer's demand for high quality food products has caused an increasing interest in developing biodegradable packaging materials using annually renewable natural biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins. However, inherent shortcomings of natural polymer-based packaging materials such as low mechanical properties and low water resistance are causing a major limitation for their industrial use. By the way, recent advent of nanocomposite technology rekindled interests on the use of natural biopolymers in the food packaging application. Polymer nanocomposites, especially natural biopolymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to their nanometer size dispersion. These improvements include increased mechanical strength, decreased gas permeability, and increased water resistance. Additionally, biologically active ingredients can be added to impart the desired functional properties to the resulting packaging materials. Consequently, natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite packaging materials with bio-functional properties have huge potential for application in the active food packaging industry. In this review, recent advances in the preparation and characterization of natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite films, and their potential use in food packaging applications are addressed.
Nanotechnology is the fast becoming key technology of the $21^{st}$ century. Due to its fascinating size-dependent properties, it has gained significant important in various sectors. Myths are being formed on the proverbal nanotechnology market, but the reality is the nanotechnology is not a market but a value chain. The chain comprises of - nanomaterials (nanoparticles) and nanointermediates (coatings, compounds, smart fabrics). Elastomer based nanocomposites reinforced with low volume fraction of nanofillers is the first generation nanotechnology products and it has attracted great interest due to their fascinating properties. The incorporation of nanofillers such as nanolayered silicates, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, metal oxides or silica nanoparticles into elastomers improves significantly their mechanical, thermal, barrier properties, flame retardency etc., Extremely small particle size, high aspect ratio and large interface area yield an excellent improvement of the properties in a wide variety of the materials. Uniform dispersion of the nanofillers is a general prerequisite for achieving desired properties. In this paper, current developments in the area of elastomer based nanocomposites reinforced with layered silicate and carbon nanotube fillers are highlighted.

High molecular weight of polycarbonate(PC) and well dispersed PC/MMT nanocomposites were successfully prepared through the novel technology, microwave solid-state polymerization. In our studies, the microwave irradiation is more effective than conventional oil-bath heating on achieving the high molecular weight and uniform nanocomposites. Using the polycarbonate prepolymer made it possible to intercalate the short chains into the galleries of MMT more easily. And it was observed that prepared nanocomposites by microwave solid-state polymerization have more uniform dispersion of silicate of MMT into the polymer matrix than by oil heating.

Na-bentonite (local clay mineral) and Na-montmorillonite were treated with quaternary alkylammonium cations. The effect of the molecular structure and functional groups of the surfactants on the organoclays was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the preparation of nanocomposites, organoclays were melt-blended with polypropylene in a twin screw extruder and $Surlyn^{(R)$. ionomer was used as a reactive compatibilizer. The clay dispersions in the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD spectra showed no peak at low angle indicated that the silicate clay layer has a nearly exfoliated dispersion in the polymer matrix. Thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were higher than those of PP.
Polystyrene/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation. To examine the distribution of the clay in polymer matrix, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used. Intercalated nanocomposites were obtained and their rheological properties were investigated. Microcellular nanocomposite foams were produced by using a supercritical fluid. As clay contents increased, the cell size decreased and the cell density increased. It was found that layered silicates could operate as heterogeneous nucleation sites. As the saturation pressure increased and the saturation temperature decreased, the cell size decreased and the cell density increased. Microcellular foams have different morphology depending upon the dispersion state of nanoclays.
