  • Alumina-silica composite coating layers were prepared by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of plate-shaped alumina particles dispersed in a sol-gel binder, which was prepared by hydrolysis and the condensation reaction of methyltrimethoxysilane in the presence of colloidal silica. The microstructure and the electrical and thermal properties of the coatings were compared according to the EPD process parameter: voltage, time and the content of the plate-shaped alumina particles. The electrical insulation property of the coatings was measured by a voltage test. The coatings were prepared by EPD of the sol-gel binder with 5-30 wt% plate alumina particles on parallel electrodes at a distance of 2 cm for 1-10 min under an applied voltage of 10-30 V. The coatings experienced increased breakdown voltage with increasing thickness. However, the higher the thickness was, the smaller the breakdown voltage strength was. A breakdown voltage as high as 4.6 kV was observed with a $400{\mu}m$ thickness, and a breakdown voltage strength as high as 27 kV/mm was achieved for the sample under a $100{\mu}m$ thickness.

  • Alumina nano-asperites were grown on plate-like alumina particles of which the surface had been covered with a capping agent to control the asperite formation sites on the particles. Utilized alumina source for asperite was nano sized ${\gamma}$-alumina, which was prepared by calcination of $Al(OH)_3$ at $600^{\circ}C$; silica suspension was used as the capping agent. Plate like alumina particles were covered by silica suspension and continuously heat-treated to $900^{\circ}C$ with nano sized ${\gamma}$-alumina, as the source material, under molten-salt atmosphere. Asperite growing site were controlled by the degree of coating of the capping agent; 10-20 nanosize of ${\theta}$-alumina were formed on the particle surface. On the other hand, alumina particles without capping agent were observed to undergo only step-like crystal growth during heat-treatment.

  • To improve $CO_2$pemselectivity, a modified silica membrane was prepared by chemical vapor deposition with tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)-ethanol-water, and TEOS-ethanol-water-HCI solution at 300-$600^{\circ}C$. The silica was effectively deposited in the mesopores of a ${\gamma}$-alumina film coated on a porous $\alpha$-alumina tube by evacuating the reactants through the porous wall. In this membrane, $CO_2$interacts, to some extent, with the pore wall, and $CO_2$/$N_2$selectivity then exceeds the value of the Knudsen diffusion mechanism, while the membrane derived from TEOS alone has no $CO_2$selectivity. The silica membrane prepared from TEOS-ethanol-water-HCI solution showed that $CO_2$permeance was $2.5$\times$10^{-7}mol/s^{-1}.m^{-2}.Pa^{-1} at 30{\circ}C$ and $CO_2$/$N_2$selectivity was approximately 3. The $CO_2$permeance and selectivity was improved by enlarging the surface diffusion with modification of chemical affinity of the silica pores.

  • Al2O3/Al composites were produced by displacement reaction method, which was carried out by immersing the sintered silica preform, which was prepared from fused silica powder, in molten aluminum. Because the molten aluminum did not penetrate into the silica preform with higher than 20% of porosity when the displacement reaction was accomplished at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in air atmosphere, the optimum range of sintering temperature of silica preform was from 135$0^{\circ}C$ to 140$0^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of this Al2O3/Al composites showed three-dimentionally co-continuous alumina, which provides wear resistance and high stiffness, and aluminium which acts as a toughnening phase. The grain size of the alumina in composites did not change with the particle size of the silica preform. The exact shape of the preform was retained and a net-shaped composite was produced. The representative Al2O3/Al composite prepared in this study showed 3.30mg/㎤ of bulk density, 350-430 MPa of flexural strength, 7.0 MPa.m1/2 of fracture toughness, and good machinability.

  • In this study, porous metal (O.D. = 10 mm, length = 10 mm, 316 L SUS, Mott Corp.) and ${\alpha}$-alumina tube (O.D. = 10 mm, length = 50 mm, Pall, German) support was modified with suspension sols, which were consisted of $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$ and 150 nm size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle in the water or silica-zirconia colloidal sol. The porous support was fabricated by dip coating method for 5 seconds with suspension of alumina particles. After drying at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, it was calcined at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. It was repeated several times in order to decrease big pore on support. The surface roughness and largest pore size on the porous support was decreased by increasing coating times with $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$ size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle and alumina coating with 150 nm size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle served as further smoothening the surface and decreasing the pore size of the substrate. And the silica-zirconia membranes were successfully prepared on the modified porous metal and ${\alpha}$-alumina supports, and showed hydrogen permeance in the range of $1.8-8.4{\times}10^{-4}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$ and $3.3-5.0{\times}10^{-5}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Ceramic tapes were fabricated by ultrasonically spraying slurries of monodispersed spherical and alumina powders. Effects of slurry compositions on tape forming were investigated. A relatively fast rate of solvent evaporation caused pores and cracks to be formed. A good chemical affinity between solvent and binder gave rise to binder separation resulting in inhomogeneous distribution of binder. Defect-free silica tapes with uniform distribution of particle packing and the binder were obtained from the solvent having a low chemical affinity and a slow evaporation rate and containing appropriate amounts of the binder and the plasticizer. Tape thickness could be controlled by adjusting solids loadings and slurry feed rates. It was possible to fabricate a tape in 15 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness from 7 vol% alumina slurry.

  • Separation of oily wastewater, which is a byproduct of various industries such as petroleum refineries, is essential to not exceed the tolerance limit of wastewater streams. Ceramic membranes show potential in oily wastewater separation, due to their excellent oil removal efficiency, good chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability, and simple operation. However, widespread application of ceramic membranes is limited due to high material cost of alumina, silica, and other ceramic based materials used to fabricate them. Recent efforts to reduce material cost have been made, using fly ash and clay. This review examines the fabrication and efficiency of ceramic membranes in oily wastewater separation according to material: silica, alumina, and waste ash.

  • In the previous paper, it was reported that formation of desirable calcium alunimate(CA) in clinker was considerably affected by sulfur-contaminated alumina which was prone to form a disadvantageous mineral, $C_4A_3S$. In this study, however, sulphate-free alumina cement was made from sulfur-free alumina refined from alunite and corresponding materials. The major minerals in the clinker were identified by X-ray diffraction patterns as calcium aluminate (CA), calcium dialuminate $(CA_2)$ and dicalcium alumino silicate $(C_2AS)$. The formation of CA was more effective with decreasing contents of silica to 2 per cent or less and sulfur in the refined alumina. Physical properties of prepared alumina cement such as setting time, stability and compressive strength were measured. The values were similar to those of commercial alumina cements.

  • In the vacuum casting process for superalloys, molten metal are poured into the heated ceramic mold up to $1000^{\circ}C~1700^{\circ}C$. The mold has to have the high temperature strength during casting and made by hlgh purity alumina. In this sturdy, the mold was made by low purity alumina and changed silica contents intended to have high strength The 7.7wt.% SiOz specimens have 10- 55% higher strength than others in room and high temp. Therefore, the cast mold has been developed in this study for single crystal vacuum cast by controlling the ratio of fused alumina and colloidal silica which are used commercially for conventional casting in industries.
