  • In this investigation, reservoir sediment and municipal sewage sludge were sintered to form the artificial lightweight aggregates. The sintered aggregates were compared with the commercialized lightweight aggregates to in terms of potential alkali-silica reactivity and chemical stability based on analyses of their physical and chemical properties, leaching of heavy metal, alkali-silica reactivity, crystal phase species and microstructure. Experimental results demonstrated that the degree of sintering of an aggregate affected the chemical resistance more strongly than did its chemical composition. According to ASTM C289-94, all potential alkali-silica reactivity of artificial lightweight aggregates were in the harmless zone, while the potential reactivity of artificial lightweight aggregates made from reservoir sediment and municipal sewage sludge were much lower than those of traditional lightweight aggregates.

  • We report the preparation of nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite, $CoFe_2O_4$, particles using recycled $Co_3O_4$ and their surface coating with silica using micro emulsion method. Firstly, the $Co_3O_4$ powders were separated from waste cemented carbide with acid-base chemical treatment. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with the size 10 nm are prepared by thermal decomposition method using recycled $Co_3O_4$. $SiO_2$ was coated onto the $CoFe_2O_4$ particles by the micro-emulsion method. The $SiO_2$-coated $CoFe_2O_4$ particles were studied their physical properties and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis and CIE Lab value.

  • As part of planning for waste minimization, decontamination foam has been considered as a potential application for the cleaning of radioactive contaminant. In this study, we synthesized silica particles to improve foam stability by varying synthesis parameters. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was found to influence the stability of the decontamination foam. The reason was that higher interaction between $SiO_2$ nanoparticles and surfactant at the air-water interface in aqueous solution is beneficial for foam stability. CTAB can also be used as an additive for the aggregation of silica nanoparticles. In the separation of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, CTAB plays a critical role in the nanoparticles flocculation because of the charge neutralization and hydrophobic effects of its hydrocarbon tails.

  • A simple solvothermal reaction was used to prepare a 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica-gel-based adsorbent for adsorbing Pd(II) from the nitric acid solution. Scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry analysis were performed on the as-synthesized adsorbent to demonstrate the successful introduction of Schiff base groups. Batch experiments were used to investigate the effects of contact time, nitric acid concentration, solution temperature, and adsorption capacity. It is worth noting that the prepared adsorbent exhibited a higher affinity toward Pd(II) with the uptake approximately 100% even in a 2 M HNO3 solution. At an equilibrium time of 5 h, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pd(II) was estimated to be 0.452 mmol/g. The adsorbed Pd(II) could be completely eluted by dissolving 0.2 M thiourea solution in 0.1 M HNO3. Using a combination of particle-induced X-ray emission analysis and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, the adsorbed Pd was found to be uniformly distributed on the surface of the prepared adsorbent and the existing species were Pd(II) and zero-valent Pd(0). Due to the desirable performances, facile preparation method, and abundant raw material source, the prepared adsorbent demonstrated a high application potential in the recovery of Pd(II) from simulated high-level liquid waste treatment.

  • Considering the current construction technology and research status of deep repository tunnels for radioactive waste disposal, it is inevitable to use cementitious materials in spite of serious concern about their long-term environmental stability. Thus, it is an emerging task to develop low pH cementitious materials. This study reviews the state of the technology on low pH cements developed in Sweden, Switzerland, France, and Japan as well as in Finland which is constructing a real deep repository site for high-level radioactive waste disposal. Considering the physical and chemical stability of bentonite which acts as a buffer material, a low pH cement limits to $pH{\leq}11$ and pozzolan-type admixtures are used to lower the pH of cement. To attain this pH requirement, silica fume, which is one of the most promising admixtures, should occupy at least 40 wt% of total dry materials in cement and the Ca/Si ratio should be maintained below 0.8 in cement. Additionally, selective super-plasticizer needs to be used because a high amount of water is demanded from the use of a large amount of silica fume.

  • In the recent concrete industry, when producing recycled aggregates, waste concrete powder is by-produced in large quantities; however, since it is not used properly but buried or discarded. This study is to apply the waste concrete powder to a cement extruding panel as filler. Flexural strength and microstructure characteristics of panel is tested in order to improve the economics of the extruding panel. As a results of this study, it was found that extruding panel replacing silica(No.8) as the waste concrete powder totally showed little difference in the strength and satisfied the target flexural strength of 14MPa, comparing with controlled panel. In addition, we can understand that rich Portlandite and Calcite contributed to develop the strength in all curing conditions from XRD pattern.

  • Since natural sand is being depleted, research is being conducted to use glass similar to sand as an aggregate. When non-reusable waste glass is crushed and used as fine aggregate, it is known that alkali of cement and silica of glass react to cause an alkali aggregate reaction. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data by studying the strength according to color to use waste glass as fine aggregate. When 10% was replaced, both flexural and compressive strength showed strength values similar to those of Plain. When replaced by 20% and 30%, the 7-day intensity was higher than that of Plain. In addition, colorless glass was found to have the highest strength among glass colors. More research is expected to be needed to become a fine aggregate of waste glass.

  • Thermal decomposition of the uranyl phosphate mineral phase meta-ankoleite (KUO2PO4·3H2O) has been considered in relation to high temperature thermal sintering for the immobilisation of a uranyl phosphate containing waste. Meta-ankoleite thermal decomposition was studied across the temperature range 25 - 1200℃ under an inert N2 atmosphere at 1 atm. It is shown that the meta-ankoleite mineral phase undergoes a double de-hydration event at 56.90 and 125.85℃. Subsequently, synthetically produced pure meta-ankoleite remains stable until at least 1150℃ exhibiting no apparent phase changes. In contrast, when present in a mixed waste the meta-ankoleite phase is not identifiable after thermal treatment indicating incorporation within the bulk waste either as an amorphous phase and/or as uranium oxide. Visual inspection of the waste post thermal treatment showed evidence of self-sintering owing to the presence of glass former materials, namely, silica (SiO2) and antimony(V) oxide (Sb2O5). Therefore, incorporation of the uranium phase into the waste as part of waste sentencing and immobilisation via high temperature sintering for the purpose of long-term disposal is deemed feasible.

  • This study suggests the effective recycling method of sludge waste from various industrial fields to synthesize uniform colloidal silica nanoparticles. In detail, polymers are removed from the sludge waste to attain sludge-extracted silica (s-SiO2) micron-sized particles, and ammonia assisted sonication is applied to s-SiO2, which has effectively extracted the silanol precursor. The nano-sized silica (n-SiO2) particles are successfully synthesized by a typical sol-gel method using silanol precursor. Also, the yield amounts of n-SiO2 are determined by the function of s-SiO2 etching time. Finally, n-SiO2-based slurry is synthesized for the practical CMP application. As a result, rough-surfaced semiconductor chip is successfully polished by the n-SiO2-based slurry to exhibit the mirror-like clean surface. In this regard, sludge wastes are successfully prepared as valuable semicondutor grade materials.

  • The present study targets to access the consequence of utilization of coarse aggregates retrieved from waste concrete as a substitution of coarse fraction of natural aggregates and silica nano-particles as partial substitution of cement using principles of factorial design. Furthermore, procedures of design of experiments are employed to examine the effect of use of recycled aggregates and nano-silica. In this investigation, compressive strength found after at 7, 28, 90 and 365 days, split and flexural tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number and are chosen as responses, whereas the percentages of recycled coarse aggregates (RCA%) and nano-silica (NS(%)) are selected as factors. Analysis of Variance has been conducted on the experimental results for the selected responses with consideration the both factors, which indicates that RCA (%) and NS (%) have substantial impact on the various responses. However, the present analysis depicts that interaction between factors has considerable effect on the chosen parameters of concrete. Furthermore, validation experiments are carried to validate these models for compressive and tensile strength for 100% RCA and 1% NS. The results of comparative study indicates that that the error of the estimation determined using the relevant models are found to be small (±5%) in comparison with the analogous experimental results, which authenticates the calculated models.
