The porosity formation by the addition of additives was found to be the highest in the case of aluminum powder 3% and $Ca(OH)_2$ 2% under the condition that strength was maintained. The optimum mixing ratio of the binder was shown to be the most effective at (Ash+Food waste+clay):(water glass+colloidal silica) 7:3, and the temperature response is most economical and effective at $1,000^{\circ}C$. The optimal mixing ratio is the strength in 30% of ash, 30% of clay and 10% of food waste, which is the effective in non-point pollution water treatment. Filter media produced under optimal mixing conditions were analyzed as $SiO_2$ 65.8%, density $1.4g/cm^3$, porosity 25.6%, pH 9.8, and no hazardous substances were detected. As a result of the filtration of the water treatment, the mean concentration of the filtered SS was $14.06mg/{\ell}$, and the removal efficiency of SS was 90%, the recovery rate of the reversal is 97.1%. This enables the development of filter media considering economic efficiency and efficiency as well as the utilization of waste resources, enabling high value added of waste resources.

For identification and apportionment of sources emitting particulate matters in environment, the multi-elemental characterization of size-density fractionated particulate matters was carried out. Eight types of samples were tested; soil, flyash released from burning of bunker-Coil, diesel oil, coal, and soft coal, urban road-way dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. The fractions of particulate matters obtained by heavy liquid separation methos with a series of dichloromethane-bromoform were then analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Ni, Cr, Cu, An, Fe, Al, and Mg. Each sample showed a different concentration profile as a function of density, and a number of useful conclusions concerning characterization of elemental distribution were obtained. From the density distributions of elements in soil, the maximum value was found for all elements in the density range of 2.2 $\sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of $SiO_2$. However, the distribution of metallic compounds with the density lower than $2.2g.cm^{-3}$ was prevalent in urban roadway dust, urban dust fall, and airborne particulate matter. And the density distribution curves of these urban dusts also have the higher distribution at the density of 2.2 - 2.9g.cm^{-3}$, including the density of wind-blown silica. This tendency generally was prevalent in the natural source elements, such as Al, Fe, Mn, and Mg. The maximum values were found in the density ranges of 1.3 $\sim 2.2g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in oil fired flyash. These distributions of anthropogenic source elements, such as Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cr were higher predominately than those of natural source elements. And the higher distribution was found in the density range of $2.2 \sim 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ from the density distribution of elements in coal and soft-coal fired flyash. These distributions showed similar patterns to soil. But anthropogenic source elements somewhat predominated at the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ to soil. Therefore the higher distribution of anthropogenic source elements in the density ranges of $1.3 \sim 2.2g.cm^{-3} and 2.9g.cm^{-3}$ was considered as anthropogenic origin.
The pyrophyllite deposits located in Jinhae area have been studied through field observations and laboratory works including the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The pyrophyllite deposits consist of mainly illite, dickite, pyrophyllite, diaspore, chlorite, pyrite and copiapite. According to the mineral assemblages, geological occurrences and alteration modes, the altered rocks can be classified into four types: Type A; quartz with silicifictaion, Type B; quartz + illite with illitization, Type C; quartz + dickite + illite with kaolin alteration, Type D; pyrophyllite + illite + dickite + diaspore with pyrophyllite alteraion. Rocks in Type A, which is generated by silicifictaion, have high $SiO_2$ contents more than 90 wt% and distinctive equigranular textures with microcrtstalline quartz. The pyrophyllites from the study area belong to 2M polytype. The host rocks of the pyrophyllite ore in this mine are rhyolitic rock, andecitic tuff and volcanic breccia. The alteration products seem to be controlled by the different lithology of the host rocks. The hydrothermal solution formed the deposits would be inferred to the acidic and have relatively high ionic activity of hydrogen and silica judging from alteration mineral assemblage. Pyrophyllite alteraion zone is generated by highest temperature condition of all alteration zone.
A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effectiveness of ammonium sulfate absorbed Zeolite on the yield of rice and the changes of some plant nutrients under the condition of two levels of water percolation. The results were as follows: 1. Unhulled rice yield was increased in the plot of the percolation of 10 mm/day than the percolation of 30 mm/day due to the increase of panicle number and ripening ratio. 2. $NH^+_4-N$, $K^+$ and $SiO_2$ concentration in soil leachates were lower in the percolation rate of 10 mm/day than in the early stage of rice growth were decreased by the application of Zeolite 1.0 T/10a. 3. Plant uptakes of K and N in the harvesting stage were more accelerated in the percolation of 10 mm/day comparing with the percolation of 30 mm/day, and the silica uptake of plant was the reverse against the case of former elements. 4. The optimum rates of Zeolite for maximum yield were about 1T/10a.
Because of its stable quantity and quality, groundwater has long been a reliable source of drinking water for domestic users. Rapid economic growth and rising standards of living have in recent years put severe demands on drinking water supplies in Korea. Groundwaters that are currently being used for natural mineral water were hydrochemically evaluated and investigated in order to maintain their quality to satisfy strict health standards. There exist 15 natural mineral water plants in the Okcheon metamorphic belt. Characteristics of groundwaters are different from those of other areas in that electrical conductivity, hardness, contents of Ca, Mg and $HCO_3$are relatively high. The content of major cations is in the order of Ca>Mg, Na>K, whereas that of major anions shows the order of $HCO_3$>$SO_4$>Cl>F. The fact that the Ca-Mg-HCO$_3$type is mostly predominant among water types reflects that dissolution of carbonates that are abundantly present in the metamorphic rocks plays an important part in groundwater chemistry. Representative correlation coefficients between chemical species show Mg-$HCO_3$(0.92), Ca-$HCO_3$(0.88), Ca-Mg(0.80), Ca-Cl(0.78), Mg-$SO_4$(0.78), Ca-$SO_4$(0.71), possibly due to the effect by dissolution of carbonates, gypsum or anhydrite. Determinative coefficients between some chemical species represent a good relationship, especially for EC-(K+Na+Ca), Ca-$HCO_3$, Ca-Mg, indiacting that they are similar in chemical behaviors. According to saturation index, most chemical species are undersaturated with respect to major minerals, except for some silica phases. Groundwater is slightly undersaturated with respect to calcite and dolomite, whereas it is still greatly undersaturated with respect to gypsum, anhydrite and fluorite, Based on the Phase equilibrium in the systems $NA_2$O-$Al_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-$H_2$O and $K_2$O-$Al_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-$H_2$O, it is clear that groundwater is in equilibrium with kaolinite, evolved from the stability area of gibbsite during water-rock interaction. It is expected that chemical evolution of groundwater continue to proceed with increasing pH by reaction of feldspars, with calcite much less reactive.
The precambrian granitic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss are widely distributed in the Gwangyang-Hadong area of Korea. This study focuses on the geochemical properties and metamorphic P-T conditions of these gneisses. These gneisses are plotted according to granodiorite domain on an IUGS silica-alkali diagram. Geochemical properties of major elements suggest that these rocks are of the sub-alkalic rock series, and were farmed from S-type magmas which were generated in a syn-collision tectonic environment. The amounts of trace elements (Zn, Sc, Sr, V, etc.) decreased as $SiO_2$ concentrations increased. Almandine and spessartine mol%'s and XFe are higher in garnet rims, while pyrope mol%'s are higher in the garnet cores. This seems to be the result of garnet growth and retrogressive metamorphism. Metamorphic zones are divided into sillimanite-cordierite, sillimanite, garnet, and biotite zones. Metamorphic P-T conditions estimated from the gneisses indicate high temperature and low to medium pressure metamorphism (689-757$^{\circ}C$, 5.0-5.6 kbar), followed by medium temperature, low pressure retrorade metamorphism (579-628$^{\circ}C$, 3.1-4.5 kbar), and overprinted retrogade metamorphism (502-558$^{\circ}C$, 1.6-2.3 kbar).
Groundwater quality of the natural mineral water was investigated in hydrochemical aspects in order to ensure that mineral water meets stringent health standards. There exist 20 mineral water plants in the Daebo granite and 4 mineral water plants in the Bulguksa granite, respectively. Both granite areas show some differences in water chemistry. The pH, EC, hardness, total ionic contents in groundwater of the Daebo granite area are higher relative to those of the Bulguksa granite area. The content of major cations is in the order of Ca>Na>Mg>K, while that of major anions shows the order of $HCO_3>SO_4$>Cl>F. The fact that the $Ca-Na-HCO_3$ type is most predominant among water types may reflect that the dissolution of plagioclase that is most abundant in granitic rocks plays a most important role in groundwater chemistry. Representative correlation coefficients between chemical species are variable depending on geology. In the Daebo granite area, $Ca-HCO_3(0.84),{\;}Mg-HCO_3(0.81),{\;}SiO_2-Cl(0.74),{\;}Na-HCO_3(0.70)$ show relatively good correlationships. In the Bulguksa granite area, fairly good correlationships are found among some components such as K-Mg(0.93), $K-HCO_3(0.92)$, Mg-Cl(0.92), $Cl-HCO_3(0.91)$, and K-F(0.90). According to saturation index, most chemical species are undersaturated with respect to major minerals, except for some silica phases. Groundwater is slightly undersaturated with respect to calcite, whereas it is still greatly undersaturated with respect to dolomite, gypsum and fluorite. Based on the phase equilibrium it is clear that groundwater is mostly in equilibrium with kaolinite and becomes undersaturated with respect to feldspars, evolved from the stability area of gibbsite during water-rock interaction. While the activity of silica increases, there is no remarkable increase in the acivities of alkali ions and pH, which indicates that some amounts of silicic acid dissolved from silica phases as well as feldspars were provided to groundwater. It is concluded that chemical evolution of groundwater in granite aquifers may continue to proceed with increasing pH.
We investigated the morphological characteristics of the pearlescent pigment by using scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and thermal analyzer. The result is that the shape of pigment is platy polygonal form through observing the pearlescent pigment by the scanning electron microscope. The size of pigment is various and not formed in standardized size or shape. The pigment flakes were measured about from $30{\mu}m$ to $300{\mu}m$. The tip of the piece of pigment is pointed shape or angled. The result of observing them by the scanning electron microscope in magnifying high power is that the edge and the lateral face of them is an round form and the measurement of thickness is about $9{\mu}m$. As well using the high magnification scanning electron microscope, the surface of the pigment flake observed like rugged as coating with the $TiO_2$ element, the diameter of the coating particle is around 60 nm, then the coating particle consists of granular substance. Analysis of the configuration elements of pearlescent pigment using by the energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry is that O, Si, C, Na, Ca, Ti, Zn detected in the surface of pigment and its lateral face identifies similar components. In thermal analysis, there are no contained quantity differences between them in beginning from $100^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ showing thermal analysis, 1.1% out of contained quantity reduced at $115^{\circ}C$, 1.7% dropped at $416^{\circ}C$, and 1.9% decreased at $797^{\circ}C$.
Various deleterious chemicals can be introduced to existing concrete structures from various external sources. The deterioration of concrete by seawater attack is involved in complex processes due to various elements contained in seawater. In the present study, attention was paid to the formation of secondary minerals and characteristics of mineralogical and micro-structural changes involved in concrete deterioration caused by the influence of major seawater composition. The characteristics of deterioration occurred in existing concrete structures was carefully observed and samples were collected at many locations of coastal areas in Busan-Kyungnam. The petrographic, XRD, SEM/EDAX analyses were conducted to determine chemical, mineralogical and micro-structural changes in the aggregate and cement paste of samples. The experimental concrete deteriorations were performed using various chloride solutions (NaCl, CaCl, $MgCl_2$ and $Na_2SO_4$ solution. The experimental results were compared with the observation results in order to determine the effect of major elements in seawater on the deterioration. The alkalies in seawater appear to accelerate alkali-silica reaction (ASR). The gel formed by ASR is alkali-calcium-silica gel which known to cause severe expansion and cracking in concrete. Carbonation causes the formation of abundant less-cementitious calcite and weaken the cement paste. Progressive carbonation significantly affects on the composition and stability of some secondary minerals. Abundant gypsum generally occurs in concretes subjected to significant carbonation, but thaumasite ({$Ca_6/[Si(OH)_6]_2{\cdot}24H_2O$}${\cdot}[(SO_4)_2]{\cdot}[(CO_3))2]$) occurs as ettringite-thaumasite solid solution in concretes subjected to less significant carbonation. Experimentally, ettringite can be transformed to trichloroaluminate or decomposed by chloride ingress under controlled pH conditions. Mg ions in seawater cause cement paste deterioration by forming non-cementitious brucite and magnesium silicate hydrate (MSH).
Catalytic hydrodechlorination of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) included in the transformer oil was carried out to detoxify PCBs and to recycle the treated oil. Catalysts such as 0.98 wt% Pt and 0.79 wt% Pd on ${\gamma}$-alumina (${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$) support, 12.8 wt% Ni on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, and 57.6 wt% Ni on silica-alumina ($SiO_2-Al_2O_3$) support were used for the catalytic hydrodechlorination. Various supercritical fluids such as carbon dioxide, propane and isobutane were used as reaction media. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, catalysts, and supercritical fluids on the catalytic hydrodechlorination were examined in detail. The detoxification degree increased in the order of Ni > Pd > Pt. This is possibly due to higher metal loading and larger metal size of the Ni catalyst. Below $175^{\circ}C,\;scCO_2$ was found as the most effective reaction media for the catalytic hydrodechlorination of PCBs included in the transformer oil.
