  • As a part of public design, private signboard should be designed to help convenience of people with the consideration of urban landscape simultaneously; however, the lack of legislated design regulations and ignorance of managing entities have resulted in uncontrolled installation of private signboards, ruining city view and causing confusion in delivering information. To appease this problem, each provincial city including Seoul is carrying out an improvement project based on its own sign management guideline. Therefore, it is timely needed to study the design satisfaction on the changed (or changing) private boards from the viewpoints of information delivery and visual environment. In this study, we investigated the design satisfaction of private signboards in Daejeon city (where very recently the improvement project has been undergoing based on its design guideline) in terms of visual factors, information delivery, and city landscape. We note that our study has its own significance to provide an empirical research on the design satisfaction of private signboards, which shows that people are mostly satisfied with the new design from aspects of visual factors, information delivery, and city landscape.

  • Korean commercial architecture is based on two distinctive characteristics of western modern architecture: grid frame structure and free facade. However, the original facade of the building disappears as numbers of commercial advertisements and signboards representing inner programs cover up the original facade. This is a unique feature of commercial architecture in Korea which I would call the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture. Common criticism on this type of building is that too many and too big signboards infringe upon the original pure facade of the architecture. Underlying assumption here is that signboards and commercial ads are inessential and decorative elements simply attached to the original pure facade of modern architecture. However, in this paper, I argue that commercial decorations is an essential aspect of korean commercial architecture rather than an inessential decorative element attached later to the essential facade of architecture and that it reflects the historical specificity of cultural and architectural modernity of Korea And thus, the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture should not be judged based upon the aesthetic paradigms of either western modern or postmodern architecture. Rather, it can be argued that surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture is a reflection of a modernity beyond the paradigm of western modernism and postmodernism. The agenda of Korean commercial architecture is then not simply to restrict or to control signboards on the building facades with the intention to clean up facade of the building but rather to integrate the signs and commercial ads with the structure of architectural surface.

  • This study aims to investigate language society cultural aspects in a community, examining and comparing linguistic errors of English signboards (ES) at home and abroad. The data comprised the ES in 5 cities, Korea and in Paris, France. The findings showed that the errors of the ES in Korea reached to 39.2%, whereas those in Paris contained 24.7%. In Korea, ES and errors were the most in Myeong-dong area. In Paris, the most ES were in the area of Eiffel Tower, but the most linguistic errors appeared at the 3, 4 districts of Marais. Those errors belonged to most in the business of drink, food, and clothes in turn in Korea, while this was the case in the field of clothes, food, and culture in Paris. The frequent errors were classified into semantic, morphologic, and syntactic aspects in turn. The regulations on signboards of foreign languages existed but were not abided by in the both countries. Thus, more practical and reasonable devices and policies are required to establish a more harmonious atmosphere of the ES.

  • This study aims to investigate the linguistic features of English signboards (ES) and socio-cultural aspects in Korea through university students' perspectives on the ES. The data comprised pictures and questionnaire on the ES from the students. The findings showed that ES reached to 55.4% for mainly the business of drink beverage and clothes. The text written by 'only English' included 2-3 words (43%), and that of 'combination of English and Korean' had 4-5 words (25%), which reached to 68% of the all. The 70% of ES were used for the business of drink beverage, food, and clothes, but these were not in harmony with the neighborhood, showing 42% of agreement. Good ES required 'visual factors (27%)', 'expression of business (23%)', 'elegant and luxurious style (19%)', and 'design and creativity (15%)', and these ES were the most in Shinchon areas. Overall, the present ES culture was insufficient to make harmonious atmosphere in Korea, which requires the support of policies and systems.

  • In this study, we focused on the low practicality of traditional outdoor advertisements due to uniformity of materials, shapes, and designs, so in order to improve it, we will analyze impact on the practicality of outdoor advertisements depends on the attached type of advertising signboards. The research method is to set up a research model and hypotheses through a literature review and conduct a survey and then perform factor analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. Hypothesis1. The evaluation factors (readability, formability or symbolism) of outdoor advertising signboard in traditional markets will affect their practicality. Hypothesis 2. The type of attached advertising signboards (protruding type or wall-type) in traditional markets will control the impact of each evaluation factors' on practicality. In a result, readability and formability will affect practicality. To increase practicality, the size, color, font, layout and etc. of outdoor advertising signboards should be well recognized to get the better understanding. Also, practicality will be increased by the harmonization and the sense of balance.

  • In general, sign is the way of communication directing human beings with their daily activities particularly in urban circumstances. And sign planning is designing and installing signboards systematically in urban environment. Generally, the range of application in space sign is pretty wide, and it may safely be say that the attractiveness of the city image is considerably decided upon the sign system. The subject of this study investigates the meaning and the role of sign system applying on human environment, and disirable design direction cope with the constant change of city space. The present study doesn't specifically deals with the basic function of signboards only, but with the problems and solution corresponding with sign system as structual element in city environment.

  • In this paper, an image-based luminance measurement system(LMS) is proposed to measure the luminance of outdoor signboards. We design the LMS that can improve disadvantages of efficiency of the point-luminance meter and portability of face-luminance meter using the image of DSLR camera and print out the luminance value by using the proposed luminance analysis algorithm in real time. Outdoor signboards have various size and shape, and are also installed on the various place. Luminance of the signboard is influenced by measurement location, angle, color, etc. Therefore, we measure the change of luminance value in accordance with measurement location for accurate luminance measurement and then consider the luminance value according to the measurement distance. We obtain a numerical relation between luminance value and measurement location. The proposed LMS is verified through comparative experiment with point-luminance meter.

  • Purpose: The ratio of the visually impaired is gradually increasing due to various causes such as natural aging, accidents, and environmental changes. Therefore, this study has two folds. Firstly, it aims to analyze the current satisfaction level with information facilities for the visually impaired. Secondly, it aims to examine the factors affecting the satisfaction with indoor information facilities. Through this study, it helps to identify problems of information facilities for the visually impaired and it works as a practical data for further improvements. Methods: For 50 visually impaired people, a telephone survey was conducted on the satisfaction with the braille blocks, braille signboards, braille information boards with tactile map, audio guide devices, and safety egress devices. Microsoft Excel and SPSS 26.0 were used for the analysis. Results: It was confirmed that the overall satisfaction with the indoor information facilities was very low. The more the visually impaired people recognized the installation standards, and the better the maintenance was, the higher the satisfaction. In the case of braille blocks and braille signboards, the effect of information transfer on satisfaction was relatively high. In the case of audio guide device and safety egress device, the standard suitability influenced satisfaction. Implications: The low level of satisfaction with the overall information facilities can impede visually impaired people from receiving practical help through the information facilities. Factors influencing the satisfaction level of each facility were identified, which makes it possible to prepare effective improvement measures.

  • Text understand in natural images has become an active research field in the past few decades. In this paper, we present an automatic recognition system in Korean signboards with a complex background. The proposed algorithm includes detection, binarization and extraction of text for the recognition of shop names. First, we utilize an elaborate detection algorithm to detect possible text region based on edge histogram of vertical and horizontal direction. And detected text region is segmented by clustering method. Second, the text is divided into individual characters based on connected components whose center of mass lie below the center line, which are recognized by using a minimum distance classifier. A shape-based statistical feature is adopted, which is adequate for Korean character recognition. The system has been implemented in a mobile phone and is demonstrated to show acceptable performance.
