Flicker-reduced memory compression for a volume-zone liquid crystal display overdrive

  • The memory compression algorithm CCC-LCP (color-count-controlled local color palette) reduces flicker in the liquid crystal display (LCD) overdrive. Its compression ratio is 1:5.4 for 10-bit images, with a 33 dB PSNR peak signal-to-noise ratio and with five times flicker reduction compared with the block truncation coding. The authors' two-alternative forced choice subjective tests proposed two new soundness properties, the 'CMP harmlessness' and 'OD non-lost (or OD liveliness)', to clarify the functional interaction between the overdrive functionality OD and the compression functionality CMP. The tests verified that CCC-LCP is practically applicable (at a 1.2H viewing distance threshold) for 42" 37-ppi WXGA TVs.

PAPR Reduction with a Recoverable Peak Cancellation Technique for OFDM

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) is one of the most promising techniques for 4th generation communication systems. One of the main disadvantages of OFDM is the Peak to Average Power Ratio(PAPR). In this paper, a recoverable peak cancellation(RPC) technique that recovers the cancelled part for the peak-cancelled OFDM signal is introduced. Using the RPC technique, the bit error rate(BER) performance can be greatly improved and the efficiency of the PAPR reduction is nearly that of the clipping method, at a cost of slightly reducing the transmission data rate.

  • Currently there is much interested in removing latent charge that is caused to latent image effect and blurring of obtained image as well as reduction of x-ray conversion efficiency in digital radiography system. To remove latent charge a-Se film is irradiated by light with 3500 lux using halogen lamp and optical fiber. We measured dark current and photosensitivity to analyze removing effect of latent charge, then compared with and without light erasing method. The reduction of measured signal due to latent charge effect was 32.3%, and the removal effect of latent charge by using light erase method was its 95.5%.

  • In this paper, we propose a residual echo and noise reduction scheme for hands-free telephony applications. The proposed algorithm uses a noise robust modified AP algorithm which estimate well echo path in noisy and whitens residual echo signal using linear prediction at non double-talk duration. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm shows better performance from acoustic interference cancellation (AIC) viewpoint.

  • There have been proposed two types of low bit rate vocoder upto now : One is MBE type using the spectrum modeling and another is CELP type using the hybrid coding method. CELP type vocoder has mainly studied between them. Specially, much of intensity is concentrated in CELP vocoder due to the emergence of Internet Phone and PCS in a domestic. In order to improve the speech quality in CELP vocoder, in this paper, we proposed a new spectrum analysis algorithm with variable window. In CELP vocoder, the spectrum of the synthesised speech signal is distorted because the fixed size windows is used for spectrum analysis. So we have measured the spectral leakage and in order to minimize the spectral leakage have adjusted the window size. Applying this method G.723.1 ACELP, we can get SD(Spectral Distortion) reduction 0.084(dB), residual energy reduction 6.3% and MOS(Mean Opinion Score) improvement 0.1.

  • This paper describes an implementation of the DSP(Digital Signal Processor) based triangular carrier frequency modulated RPWM inverter drive system. The power spectrum of the noise emitted from the induction motor was measured in the anechoic chamber. The analysis of the sources for the acoustic noise and the effects of the noise reduction are confirmed by the measured spectra of the noise. Real-time RPWM along with the speed control was achieved by high speed DSP. By changing the center frequency and the bandwidth of the carrier, the proposed real-time RPWM scheme can be used as an efficient switching frequency band acoustic noise reduction method for the inverter drive system with variant load conditions.

  • The tire is considered as one of the important noise sources having an influence on vehicle's performance. The Pattern noise of a tire is the transmission sound of airborne noise. On smooth asphalt road, Pattern noise is amplified with the velocity. In recent, the study on the reduction of Pattern noise is energetically processed. Pattern noise is strongly related with pitch sequence. To reduce the pattern noise, tire's designer has to randomize the sequence of pitch. The FFT is a traditional method to evaluate the level of the randomization of the pitch sequence, but gives no information on time-varying, instantaneous frequency. In the study, we found that Time-Frequency transform is a useful method to non-stationary signal such as tire noise.

  • A method of processing signals of unaligned geomagnetic sensors placed on the seabed is presented. The offset drifts of the fluxgate sensors are processed by polynomial fitting and the orientations of the sensor axes are found by minimizing the noise power using wavelet analysis. The noise power was reduced by 9.1 dB by processing the components of magnetic field separately using subtraction filter, polynomial fitting and wavelet analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective noise reduction method for photon counting imaging using a discrete wavelet transform. Conventional 2D photon counting imaging was used to visualize the object under dark conditions using statistical methods, such as the Poisson random process. The photons in the scene were estimated using a statistical method. However, photons which disturb the visualization and decrease the image quality may occur in the background where there is no object. Although median filters are used to reduce the noise, the noise in the scene remains. To remove the noise effectively, our proposed method uses the discrete wavelet transform, which removes the noise in the scene using a specific thresholding method that utilizes photon counting imaging characteristics. We conducted an optical experiment to demonstrate the denoising performance of the proposed method.

  • We propose a speckle reduction technique in electronic holographic display systems, where digital micro-mirror array devices are used as spatial light modulators. By adopting a programmable filtration in a general 4-f optic configuration, it is shown that the signal spectrum components in the frequency domain of a viewing-window-based holographic display system can be selectively filtered. Compared to the widely utilized single-sideband filtration techniques in electronic holographic display systems, our proposed programmable filtration can be utilized to effectively reduce the speckles in the reconstruction of point-cloud-based computer-generated holograms. Experimental results are presented to verify our proposed concept.
