We report on electrochemical signal amplification using gap electrodes based on the redox cycling between gap electrodes. The distance between electrodes was controlled from $2{\mu}m$ to a few hundreds of nanometer by chemical deposition of reduced Au ion on the pre-defined electrodes. Enhanced redox current of ferri/ferrocyanide was obtained by redox cycling between the two working electrodes. The faradaic current is amplified about a thousand times in this redox system. Since the signal amplification is due to the shortened diffusion length between the two electrodes, the narrower the nanogap was, the better detection limit, calibration sensitivity, and dynamic range. The experimental results were discussed on the basis of the cyclic voltammetry (CV), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements.
We have analyzed the amplification of a signal wave in the optical parametric interactions of the pump, signal, and idler waves in planar waveguides, with the pump wave being Cerenkov radiation. Based on the coupled-mode theory, we have derived the first-order coupled-mode differential equations for no pump depletion. The equations can easily be solved numerically. The approximate analytical and numerical solutions of the equations show that the signal wave can be amplified parametrically.
We report amplification of a small signal in a diode-pumped Cs vapor cell with 500 torr of ethane buffer gas, in the low-pump-power regime of 200 mW or less. For efficient amplifier operation, the pump and signal beams were coupled to a single-mode optical fiber, and completely overlapped in the Cs vapor cell. We investigated the amplification of the small signal according to cell temperature, signal power, and pump power. An amplification factor of 56 was achieved under the conditions of cell temperature of $115^{\circ}C$, signal power of 0.1 mW, and pump power of 200 mW.
We report on a numerical calculation study of two new functional properties in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), negative dynamic resistance and RF amplification. The magnetic dynamics in a conventional CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB MTJ with in-plane magnetization was investigated using a macro-spin model simulation. To examine the influence of thermal fluctuations, random external magnetic fields were also included. Using a voltage controlled bias circuit, the negative dynamic resistance was obtained from time averaged I-V characteristics at both 0 K and 300 K under appropriate external magnetic fields and bias voltages. Using this negative dynamic resistance property, we demonstrated RF amplification with a 100 MHz high frequency signal. Sizable RF amplification gain was observed without thermal fluctuation. However, at 300 K, the RF signal was not amplified because low frequency magnetization dynamics were dominant.
We propose a real-time post processing of nonlinear amplified signal to improve voice recognition in remote talk. In the previous research, we have found the nonlinear amplification has unique advantage for both the voice activity detection and the sound localization in remote talk. However, the original signal becomes distorted due to its nonlinear amplification and, as a result, the rest of sequence such as speech recognition show less satisfactorily results. To remedy this problem, we implement a linearization algorithm to recover the voice signal's linear characteristics after the localization has been done.
Salmonella species are among the major pathogens that cause foodborne illness outbreaks. In this study, we aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the rapid and sensitive detection of Salmonella species. We designed LAMP primers targeting the hilA gene as a universal marker of Salmonella species. A total of seven Salmonella species strains and 11 non-Salmonella pathogen strains from eight different genera were used in this study. All Salmonella strains showed positive amplification signals with the Salmonella LAMP assay; however, there was no non-specific amplification signal for the non-Salmonella strains. The detection limit was 100 femtograms (20 copies per reaction), which was ~1,000 times more sensitive than the detection limits of the conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay (100 pg). The reaction time for a positive amplification signal was less than 20 minutes, which was less than one-third the time taken while using conventional PCR. In conclusion, our Salmonella LAMP assay accurately detected Salmonella species with a higher degree of sensitivity and greater rapidity than the conventional PCR assay, and it may be suitable for point-of-care testing in the field.

Redox cycling in between the two working electrodes in an electrochemical cell can lead a great signal enhancement. In this work, we report on a systematic examination of current amplification along with the decrease in the gap distance of a nanogap device which was fabricated by the combination of photo and chemical lithography [1]. The gap distance was controlled by the chemical lithographic process of surfacecatalyzed growth of metallic layer on pre-defined electrodes with wider initial gap. Enhancement of the redox current of ferri/ferrocyanide was observed upon gap distance reduction and the current is amplified about a thousand times in this redox system when the gap distance was decreased from 200 nm to 30 nm. The experimental results were discussed on the basis of the cyclic voltammetry (CV), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
In broom sorghum, Sorghum bicolor Moench, UV causes anthocyanin synthesis having action peaks in UVA and UVB regions. We previously reported that UV induces anthocyanin synthesis through UVB photoreceptor and phytochrome activated by UV. Furthermore, UVA and UVB amplify phytochrome-induced anthocyanin synthesis (PIAS). Our action- spectroscopic research indicated that a UV -receptor for amplification of PIAS is likely to be the same or same type of UVB photoreceptor for induction of anthocyanin synthesis. UVA-amplification of PIAS can be explained by the action of a cryptic red light signal (CRS), an amplification factor for PIAS produced by a distinct phytochrome-species activated by UVA. We suggest that UVA photoreceptors are not involved in anthocyanin synthesis in the broom sorghum.
The aim of this study was to develop a signal process circuit for a position sensitive avalanche photodiode detector. The circuit parts consisted of amplification, differential and peak/hold circuit. This research was the baseline to develop highly compact radiation detector. The signal was amplified by an amplification chip and its shape was changed in a differential circuit to minimize the pulse tailing. The peak/hold circuit detect the peak of the signal from the differential circuit and hold the amplitude of the peak for data acquisition. In order to test the intrinsic function of the circuit, the input signal was transmitted from a commercial pulse generator.

Optical parametric amplification has been analyzed for the Cerenkov-idler configuration in planar waveguides. The coupled-mode theory is employed for the analysis. The coupled-mode equations are derived and the approximate analytic solution is obtained for no pump depletion. From the analytic solution, it is shown that the signal power gain can be enhanced as the Cerenkov radiation angle of the idler approaches to zero. The numerical example is also shown for the effect of the Cerenkov radiation angle approaching zero.
