Application of AC superimposed DC waveforms to bismuth electrorefining

  • Electrorefining in molten salts is used for purifying actinides. Optimizing electrorefining is key to minimizing processing time and radiological waste. One possible way of improving electrorefining efficiency is using an AC superimposed DC waveform. This waveform has demonstrated potential benefits in aqueous solutions but has never been utilized in a molten metal, molten salt application. This work investigates the effects of using an AC superimposed DC waveform on molten bismuth electrorefining in a molten LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 eutectic. Bismuth has been identified as a potential surrogate for plutonium electrorefining and a potential cathode in electrorefining used nuclear fuel (UNF). All electrorefining runs resulted in a high purity cathode ring and high yield with exception of the run using a low-frequency, high-amplitude superimposed AC waveform, which experienced some contamination and a lower yield. The other three AC superimposed DC runs experienced an average yield 6.7 % higher than the average yield of the DC runs. The electrorefining run using the high-frequency, high-amplitude superimposed AC signal had the highest yield. It is recommended in future studies to investigate the statistical variability of electrorefining yield and current efficiency and the impact of AC superimposed DC waveforms on solidified bismuth anodes.

  • In speech processing, the waveform codings are concerned with simply preserving the waveform of signal through a redundancy reduction process. In the case of speech synthesis, the waveform codings with high quality are mainly used to the synthesis by analysis. Because the parameters of this coding are not classified as both excitation and vocal tract, it is difficult to apply the waveform coding to the synthesis by rule. Thus, in order to apply the waveform coding to synthesis by rule, it is necessary to alter the pitches. In this paper, we proposed a new pitch alteration method that can change the pitch period in waveform coding by dividing the speech signals into the vocal tract and excitation parameters. This method is a time-frequency domain method preserving the phase component of the waveform in time domain and the magnitude component in frequency domain. Thus, it is possible that the waveform coding is carried out the synthesis by rule in speech processing. In case of using the algorithm, we can obtain spectrum distortion with $2.94\%$. That is, the spectrum distortion is decreased more $5.06\%$ than that of the pitch alteration method in time domain.

  • This paper presents the method of low power optimization considering the glitch reduction in CMOS circuits. Our algorithm utilizes the information of MOS size, the load capacitance of fan-out, and input slew to calculate the output waveform by using the linear signal model. Therefore, the accurate waveform of glitch can be obtained for estimation of power dissipation caused by glitches. Our algorithm is applied to ISCAS’85 benchmark circuits and experimental results show 23% glitch reduction and 11% total power reduction.

  • This paper proposes the new signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) that is different from the conventional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in direct-sequence code-division multiple-access communication system employing offset quadrature phase-shift keying(OQPSK) and using a chip waveform. The conventional SNR value is so different from a real SNR value. Therefore, we propose a new SNR equation approximated to real SNR. The multiple-access interference(MAI) in DS-CDMA communication system has an effect on SNR performance and MAI is concerned with the correlation functions of the chip waveform. For this reason, we considered all possible correlations of chip waveforms. In conclusion, the SNR value of proposed method is enclosed to the real SNR value.

  • A new stroke output control algorithm with a fuzzy logic for an electrohydraulic left ventricular assist device(EH-LVAD) was developed. The EH-LVAD pumps out blood from left atrium actively. Excessive suction of blood may cause fatal damage in left atrium. The LVAD has to provide a maximal stroke output without collapse of left atrium. In this study a new fuzzy algorithm for predicting and detecting suction and doing proper action on LVAD without using an extra pressure sensor but with bellows pressure signal and motor current signal is developed. The performance of the fuzzy control algorithm is demonstrated by the results from mock circulatory experiments.

  • In this paper a CI(carrier interferometry) chip waveform shaping scheme which Is made up of orthogonal carriers equally spaced in frequency, and used to introduce frequency diversity benefits into DS-CDMA, is considered. A new communication scheme referred to as CI/DS-CDMA using CI chip shaping, is introduced. Through the performance evaluation of CI/DS-CDMA systems in a typical frequency selective fading channel environment, it is shown that the frequency diversity benefits of this system results in significant performance enhancements relative to traditional DS-COMA with RAKE receivers using the path diversity.

  • In this paper, a new method is proposed for a simple andaccurate design of larage-sigal power amplifier using the output current- and volage- waveform analysis. An existing high-efficiency theory, Harmonic Loading, is modified to apply to a real device, and the notion of "actual bias point at large-signal input" is proposed. Based on the proposed theory, 2GHz band poweramplifier is implemented using HEMT device, and the implemented amplifier shows 14dBm output power, 46% drain efficienty, 38% power-added efficiency and 7.8dB gain at 2V bias voltage.

  • Damage process of CFRP laminates was characterized by Acoustic Emission (AE). The main objective of this study is to determine if the sources of AE in CERP laminates could be identified from the characteristics of the waveform signals recorded during monotonic tensile test. The time history and power spectrum of each individual wave signal recorded during test were examined and classified according to their special characteristics. The wave from and frequency of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the extent of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix crack, debonding, fiber pull-out and fiber fracture as load is increased. Four distinct types of signals were observed regardless of specimen condition. The result showed that the AE method could be effectively used for analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP laminates.

  • The purpose of this research was to discuss the system that operated Ultra sonic transducer of Pelzo electric ceramics type. The structure of controller was made up of digital signal part drive and feedback circuit, and half bridge inverter. Digital signal part was designed to gain the stable oscillation frequency by making consideration of pointed resonance bandwidth. We tried to control inverter by forward feedback condition because BLT based on the flexibility of elements such as temperature and load condition. In addition, transducer was operated as inverter in order to enhance its power efficiency. In this experiment, output voltage waveform and current waveform have been observed by using BLT.
