  • This paper presents a electrocardiogram(ECG), electromyogram(EMG), and Photoplethysmography(PPG) signal wireless monitoring system based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). ECG and EMG sensor interface analog front-end circuits are designed by using off-the-shelf parts. Texas Instruments(TI)'s CC2540DK is used for BLE-based communication. Two CC2540DK modules are used as Peripheral and Central nodes. In peripheral device, vital signals are acquired by the analog front-ends and fed to ADC for analog-to-digital conversion. The peripheral transmitts the data through the air to the central device. The central device receive the data and sends them to PC using UART. GUI is designed using Labview for displaying the acquired vital signals. The developed system can be used for future ubiquitous wireless healthcare system based on bluetooth 4.0.

  • This paper describes an 8b 52 MHz CMOS subranging analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) applications. The proposed ADC based on the improved time-interleaved architecture removes the holding time which is typically observed in the conventional double-channel subranging ADCs to increase throughput rate. Moreover, the ADC employs the interpolation technique in the back-end subranging ADCs far residue signal processing to minimize die area and power consumption. The fabricated and measured prototype ADC in a 0.8 um n-well double-poly double-metal CMOS process typically shows a 52 MHz sampling rate at a 5 V supply voltage with 230 mW, and a 40 MHz sampling rate at a 3 V power supply with 60 mW power consumption.

  • In this paper, distributed mixer is studied at microwave frequency. The circuit of distributed mixer composed of gate 1,2, drain transmission lines, matching circuits in input and output terminal, DGFET's. For impedance matching of input and output port at higher frequency, image impedance concept is introduced. In distributed mixer, a DGFET's impedances are absorbed by artificial transmission line, this type of mixer can get a very broadband characteristics compared to that of current systems. A RF/LO signal is applied to each gate input port, and are excited the drain transmission line through transcondutance of the DGFET's. The output signals from each drain port of DGFET's added in same phases. We designed and frabricated the distributed mixer, and a conversion gain, noise figure, bandwidth, LO/RF isolation of the mixer are shown through computer simulation and experimentation.

  • Various multimedia systems have been developed and their application areas widely proliferate. Thus, the interoperability is getting important among various networks and devices. The video transcoding is a technology to solve this interoperability problem among various coding standards. Transcoding can be defined as the conversion of one compressed coded data to another. In this paper, MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transcoder in the spatial domain is compared with that in the DCT domain. The transcoder is very useful when a video sequence that is originally encoded for digital TV, DVD or satellite broadcasting is served in mobile environment. In order to compare two transcoders, all modules except motion compensation and down sampling are implemented identically. In addition, both transcoders do not search for motion vector. Instead, the decoded information is reused to the encoder. The experimental results show that the transcoder in the spatial domain is usually better than that in the DCT domain with respect to PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio), bitrate and execution time.

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis and design and implementation results of a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system that can detect human heartbeat and respiration signals. In order to design a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system qualitatively, we investigate the electromagnetic properties of human tissues and calculate the target SNR of demodulation output with respect to distance. The target SNR is defined by the 90 % success ratio for detecting heartbeat signal. With this target SNR value, the performance and link budget of the bio-radar system is simulated using MATLAB. Using this link budget results, the direct conversion receiver is designed and Implemented in 4 layer printed circuit board(PCB). With output power of 0 dBm and 5 Hz bandwidth, 80 % success ratio of 50 cm is measured. Measurement results show a good agreement with simulation results.

  • Acanthamoeba infection is difficult to treat because of the resistance property of Acanthamoeba cyst against the host immune system, diverse antibiotics, and therapeutic agents. To identify encystation mediating factors of Acanthamoeba, we compared the transcription profile between cysts and trophozoites using microarray analysis. The DNA chip was composed of 12,544 genes based on expressed sequence tag (EST) from an Acanthamoeba ESTs database (DB) constructed in our laboratory, genetic information of Acanthamoeba from TBest DB, and all of Acanthamoeba related genes registered in the NCBI. Microarray analysis indicated that 701 genes showed higher expression than 2 folds in cysts than in trophozoites, and 859 genes were less expressed in cysts than in trophozoites. The results of real-time PCR analysis of randomly selected 9 genes of which expression was increased during cyst formation were coincided well with the microarray results. Eukaryotic orthologous groups (KOG) analysis showed an increment in T article (signal transduction mechanisms) and O article (posttranslational modification, protein turnover, and chaperones) whereas significant decrement of C article (energy production and conversion) during cyst formation. Especially, cystein proteinases showed high expression changes (282 folds) with significant increases in real-time PCR, suggesting a pivotal role of this proteinase in the cyst formation of Acanthamoeba. The present study provides important clues for the identification and characterization of encystation mediating factors of Acanthamoeba.

  • This paper reports the development and performance evaluation of a backend system for real-time IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound) imaging. The developed backend system was designed to minimize the amount of logic and memory usage by means of efficient LUTs (Look-up Tables), and it was implemented in a single FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) without using external memory. This makes it possible to implement the backend system that is less expensive, smaller, and lighter. The accuracy of the backend system implemented was evaluated by comparing the output of the FPGA with the result computed using a MATLAB program implemented in the same way as the VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) code. Based on the result of ex-vivo experiment using rabbit artery, the developed backend system was found to be suitable for real-time intravascular ultrasound imaging.

  • A new current mirror for high-accuracy current-mode signal processing and integrated circuit design was proposed. The current mirror adopts the technique of an adaptive feedback to reduce the input impedance and the output stage of regulated cascode current mirror to increase the output impedance. Simulation results show that the current mirror has input impedance of 0.9Ω, the output impedance of 415 MΩ, and current gain of 0.96 at the supply voltage Vcc=5V. The power dissipation is 1.5㎽. In order to certify the applicability of the proposed current mirror, a voltage-to-current converter using the current mirror is designed. Simulation results show that the converter has good agreement with theoretical equation and has three times better conversion characteristics when compared with voltage-to-current converter using Wilson current mirror.

  • A dual purpose robot automation system is developed for both arc welding and spot welding by one robot within a cell. The need for automation of both arc welding and spot welding processes is urgent while the production volume is not so big as to accommodate separate station for the two processes. Also, space is too narrow for separate station to be settled down in the factory. A spot welding robot is chosen and the function for arc welding are implemented in-house at cost of advanced functions. For the spot welding, a single pole type gun is used and the robot has to push down the plate to be welded, which causes the robot positioning error. Therefore, position error compensation algorithm is developed. The basic functions for the arc welding processes are implemented using the digital I/O board of robot controller, PLC, and A/D conversion PCB. The weaving pattern is taught in meticulously by manual teach. A fixture unit is also developed for dual purpose. The main aspects of the system is presented in this paper especially in the design and implementation procedure. The signal diagrams and sequence logic diagrams are also included. The outcome of the dual purpose welding cell is the increased productivity and good production stability which is indispensable for production volume prediction. Also, it leads to reduction of manufacturing lead time.

  • Fluoride has been accepted as an important material for oral health and is widely used to prevent dental caries in dentistry. However, its safety is still questioned by some. Autophagy has been implicated in cancer cell survival and death, and may play an important role in oral cancer. This study was undertaken to examine whether sodium fluoride (NaF) modulates autophagy in SCC25 human tongue squamous cell carcinoma cells. NaF demonstrated anticancer activity via autophagic and apoptotic cell death. Autophagic vacuoles were detectable using observed to form by monodansylcadaverine (MDC) and acridine orange (AO). Analysis of NaF-treated SCC25 cells for the presence of biochemical markers revealed direct effects on the conversion of LC-3II, degradation of p62/SQSTM1, cleavage formation of ATG5 and Beclin-1, and caspase activation. NaF-induced cell death was suppressed by the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA). NaF-induced autophagy was confirmed as a pro-death signal in SCC25 cells. These results implicate NaF as a novel anticancer compound for oral cancer therapy.
